I need help with placing a hint brush

I'm trying to improve my fps because it drops down to just above 30 when I look a certain direction. I have a map with 2 hangers with a hallway seperating them. The hangers are back to back. When I go to the end of a hanger and look back the frame rate just drops. I think it's drawing the other hanger at the same time. Anyways, every other point of view has an excellent frame rate. Can someone tell me where to put the hint brush? I tried putting it right down the middle of the hallway but it didn't do anything.

yeh the areaportal would be the simple solution...

wth is a hint brush? ...i was just gona try to find out myself

but since it was brought up anyone wana explain?

WarMaster, you can of course see for shure if it is rendering the other room

but entering r_ShowTris 1. Wireframe mode is the mappers friend.

Here's a tutorial on hint brushes Joben

I already had 2 bay doors for each hanger that lead to the hallway. I tried the area portals but it didn't work. It's because above the hallway, there's a control room with glass on each side to overlook the hangers. I'm sure that's why it draws the other hanger. Given this new information is there something I can do to improve the frame rate.

these brushes are structural right? cuz they block vis, and if there is a door in the brush the area portal maintains structure. Hint brushes don't always work, they only "suggest" to the game engine to make a leaf node here. It has a lot to do with where you place them as well.

Also, word to the wise, becareful with how you use hint brushes, because misplaced Hint brushes can KILL your VIS when compiling.

Just a Little FYI

Me thinks i shall have to read this over carefuly...

I wish i wasnt a bit of a perfectionist. Im gona have to try

and understand stuff like this now. Might have been more

fun to turn out a few crappy levels i could take uninformed pride in :p;)

Hint brushes just break up leaf nodes and make more of them. The result is that vis or whatever can calculate what should be seen and what shouldn't.

They don't really serve a practical purpose unless your level is a very extremely complex set of hallways with 90 degree turns.

This is an old thread from 2 weeks ago. Thanks anyways for bringing it up again Bell. Since then I had the time to play around with hint brushes and area portals. They don't dramatically improve frame rates but they do help.
