Night4554
Search seems to be disabled, so I'll bother you with a new topic. Could someone please tell me or direct me to how much bandwidth is needed for a pretty high profile server?
<JOTD>Jedi Hunter
I'd say 0 - 200. But that's an estimate
Cedrin
Let's say were talking about a 20 player server. The amount of bandwidth probably needed will be 45k upload and 35k/sec download. This is based off looking at how much bandwidth a dueling server uses and increase it a bit.
Sith Maximus
Use this as a guide. Say you have a 384kps connection. The math is : number of players x maxrate = bandwidth needed So here is an example: 8x4000=32000 (320kps) So you could run 8 players. If you set it to 9 9x4000=36000 (360kps) It might work but in high traffic you may get too many slowdowns. For a 20 person server you would need 800kps for a maxrate of 4000. Hope this helps. Wotok
Math is off... 8bits (b) to a byte (B). or 8b=1B 8x4000=32000bytes (32KBps) or (256kbps) 9x4000=36000bytes (36KBps) or (288kbps) If you wanted a 20 person game @ 4000bytes/sec 20x4000=80000bytes (80KBps) or (640kbps) Sorry.. couldn't let this slip by... I'm a network engineer by trade. BTW, I have no idea what the quality of 4KB is like versus 3 or 5 or higher. My server's set at 5KB. If I can get away with 4KB and not get any lag or high pings, I can make my limits higher. Right now (after TCP/IP overhead and such) I can sustain 52KBps (416kbps) Originally posted by Sith Maximus Use this as a guide. Say you have a 384kps connection. KnightHawk420
a sv_maxrate of 5000 is kinda piss poor for a 10+ client server. 7000 for a 16 client server seems to work well, but in my experience going lower tends to start causing unneccessary lag. Furthermore after a server hits about 18 players, the q3 engine itself starts to buckle a little... even at a maxrate of 10000
GOTF_Rhodite
I am running a server at maxrate=10000 I had it set to 8000 but was getting choppy for users. How do u guys survive on 4000???
Sith Maximus
I set my rate now at 5000 but only people from Georgia and Florida play on it (I am near Tampa Florida). My maxping is 200 so everyone runs about a 50 to 80 ping when they are on. I also disable the only thing that lags us...lightning. With that off all is smooth sailing. -=Lord Oz=-
If you want a 32 person server I suggest you rent one from a server provider. A couple of providers that have JK2 servers are http://www.ilangame.com and http://www.gaminghost.com.

The upload is most important in this case. You are able to upload 32k/sec with your connection. You'd be fine with a 10 person server.
