  1. 1. How close does a voice actor have to be to play Kyle?

    • If it isn\'t absolutely dead on, it ruins the level

    • It needs to be very close, if there is much of a difference it\'s silly

    • Needs to be recognisably Kyle, but you can\'t expect it to be too similar

    • Can be a good way off, as long as we get the general gist

I thought I'd post a poll as well. Basically, I have a voice actor for Kyle who is a good voice actor and gets the voice pretty close. You can tell it isn't the same guy who did the voice for Kyle in the main game sort of thing, but it's recognisably a lot like Kyle. Is this close enough?

You can use only dialogs/sounds from your actor, replacing the few recognizable kyle sounds. I doubt anyone will care as long as the voice actor does well.

If not, invent a new character. Being honest, Kyle is not that kicking ass. :)

The only bad option I can see is using 2 *different* voices on the same character.

A lot of people don't seem to keen on Kyle, but I still think he's the man!

You're right, 2 different voices on the same character is something that should be avoided at all costs, really gets on my nerves when they do that on TV

Well you know, most people don't have access to professional voice actors that happen to sound EXACTLY like the voice actor from JO...

I geuss you're right. I'm not really that much of a perfectionist myself when it comes to accuracy with the voices...I just don't want to get a load of complaints about how bad the voice is and that obscuring anything else about the map. I think this guy is good, not dead on but not bad, as long as most others are happy with that, then I am :)

One of the greatest tricks is to use Cool Edit 2000 and Goldwave to alter the voices. I wouldn't recommend using one actor and edited voices for all the other characters, but it works good for extras and NPCs. I know Deus Ex did this, or at least had the voice actors change their tone. E.g. Paul Denton is voice acted by the same guy as J.C. Denton.

Yeah, I doubt they digitally changed the actors voice to sound like JC or Paul. Most professional voice actors can do a multiple of voices. The guy who does Homer Simpson's voice, also does Grandpa, Barney and half of everyone else in the show.

It's the same with BoaM (my MotS level series), DAK did the voices of Palpatine, Vader and Yoda, and they were all convincing portrayls (he also went on to play Boba Fett in ToaM). He's just agreed to play Mace Windu in my upcoming JO level, which should be swell.

More on the topic, Kyle has been played by a different voice actor in every game he's been in, so it really isn't very important that he sounds exactly the same as the JO guy. For authenticity though, he should sound fairly similar. Just make sure he doesn't have a German accent or anything.

You could also provide a sample sound recording from the actor in question. Then the community can really comment on if he sounds like Kyle or not. Totally your call of course.

I was thinking of doing that, might be a good idea.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I didn't realise it was a different voice actor for Kyle in every game he's in, that's an interesting point. I thought Luke in JK2 was a good example of someone who doesn't really sound that much like the actual guy who played him, but does sound close enough to make it clear he's the same character. From what I've heard from everyone, sound like the guy I've got to do the voice is close enough to keep everyone happy :)
