Breaking Tradition

"Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones" is the odd film out in the current series. Why? Because of the final battles.

While watching "Episode I - The Phantom Menace", I realised that each Star Wars film has had it's final battles relate to the order of release. Example:

1: "A New Hope", first Star Wars film released: one final battle (Death Star One attack).

2: "The Empire Strikes Back", second film released: two final battles (Vader/Luke and the Rebel escape).

3: "Return of the Jedi", third film released: three final battles (Endor battle, space battle and Vader/Luke/Palpatine).

Then, for a long time, nothing happened... until...

4: "The Phantom Menace", forth film released: four final battles (Jedi/Sith, Amidala in the palace, Gungan/Droid armies and space battle).

Then we see "Attack of the Clones" released, but not with the expected five final battles: just one long war-type-battle, with the arena leading into the sky before landing back on the ground for the epic lightsaber clash. It does not fit in with the rest of the films, and although five final battles would have been mind-boggling, it would have been nice as a sort of film tradition thingy, I think.

Hey, if this was the case, I would be dreading the sixth film in the series... hectic chaos all round!

George Lucas did once mention that with the original films he was trying to make each one bigger, better and more action-packed. Maybe that explains the increasing battles each time! However, I would think that it had to stop sometime... after all, can you imagine AOTC spilling out into five final wars? Crazy!

I actually considered that too. It could be the saber battles, battlefield battles, animal battles, and arena battle (which can actually be broken into another part if you go before and after the arrival of the gunships). If we take those four and toss in the missing battle (the raid by Plo Koon and company on the processing plant) then we'd have 5 (or six, if you broke the latter arena battle into 2 parts).

So many battles... why can't we all just get along?!?

Nice juggling of the Episode II battles, though: it's a great battle, but I was thinking more along the lines of battles all at once. After all, the Jedi escape the beasts, attack the droids, get on the gunships, fly around and duel with Dooku in one long-running chain of events. In the other films, all the battles went on at once (apart from A New Hope, which only had one). Still, five battles sound about right for Episode II. Well done, Kryllith!
