hmm, 4000 years?

Reading the official website, it says Knights of the Old Republic is meant to be set "over 4,000" years before the first Star Wars film. Don't you think that's a little too long ago for droids and starships to exist? Putting it into context, 4,000 years ago on earth - in 2000BC - we were still stuck in the Neolithic and Bronze age and we hadn't even invented the wheel yet! And since that time, we've made more developments than you can shake a stick at, so I ask you, isn't 4,000 years an awfully long time for things to stay relatively similar?

Of course you could argue that after you reach a certain level of development, it's difficult to progress further; or ultimately that Star Wars is a fantasy and our rules don't apply - so it doesn't matter - but I'm still hard done by to imagine that nothing much happened over so many years.

Still, this is only my take on it and I'd be interested to see what you think :)

Meditate on this, I did. For about 2 seconds. The best I like to think is it's fantasy so roll with it, but you do have a realistic point. Personally, while I am highly anticipating the game, the vehicles and droids we've seen in screenshots and the trailer look a little too close to those in the movies. You know that one ship is a rip from the Millenium Falcon. Or, the Millenium Falcon is a rip from it since it was "in the past". Still, I like the idea that Jedi and Sith battled for ages in the past and this game is set at one of those high points during that era. Then the Jedi all but vanguish the Sith (for what, 2000 years?), then the Sith return and all but vanguish the Jedi, and then the Jedi Return, blah blah. I don't have a problem with the game being 4000 years before SW:TPM and having droids, etc like they do in the movies. Necessity is the mother of invention. We're still inventing things because we don't have protocol droids and astro droids and starships so we can't really compare that yet.

My first attempt at creating a droid, was a cardboard box and white lcd type lights <-- from a toy train (tyco i believe), the droid was made with many train parts :). Now many years later technology has changed and now my droid can be fitted with colored lcd lights.

My point is maybe change is slow, not from of a technology standpoint, but because of the available technology, if the sith and jedi have been at war for so long it is reasonable to assume the galaxys infrastructure is not 100%

Just my 2 cents

Discovery is the hardest part. Once you discover something you can basicly go nuts with ideas to advance it.

Think about computers. A computer that used to do what a calculator now does used to take up a whole room. Now the same thing can fit in the palm of your hand or on your watch and that's 40-50 years. Imagine where we'll be with computers at the 100 year mark or 1000.

That's the way I see the Star Wars universe.

Another example, look at Anakin's arm and Luke's hand. Much different.

i find it somewhat amusing that the technology in the prequels seems so sleek and elegant, whereas the technology in the original trilogy seems a little more clunky and bulky. don't you think it's funny how the naboo ships seem more 'futuristic' than the x-wings?

maybe it's just a planet/civilization thing ... maybe it's just an 'imagination' thing from lucas and his crew ... maybe it's just me looking into things too much ... maybe i should shut up now.

:p

Yeah I'm a bit the same.

I find the fancy new HUD's and that sort of thing the dodgiest. I want the next movie to have some control panels which look like they're made out of christmas trees like the ones you see on the death star in the original.

I saw an interview a while back with various Lucasfilm concept artists and such saying that they are slowly trying to meld in that sort of "industrial" style that was so prevalent in the early films.

Hopefully we should see quite a lot of that in Episode III...

Hopefully.

well first concerning the smoother idea is that in the original trilogy, we don't see most ships besides the rebellion and the empire. In Ep2, Lucas depicts the Empires mechs, ships, etc with the same blocky style, and the rebellion spawned from the Empire so they're designs would be similar.

Concerning time, imagine this. We've been around for around 4,000 years...And we only really got into space travel in the last 100 years, and then from here, i'm figuring it probably take us a long time to accomplish space travel like in the SW galaxies. Now figure in all the high tech ideas they incorporate into the ships....Hyper Space, Lasers, Space age Reflecter shields, etc...The time span might be off but not by more than 10,000. With the whole 4,000 years gap between this and Ep1....I frankly don't like it. To be correct with the technology...it's going to be prolly still a powerful amount of technology considering they've had space travel for 21,000 years....In conclusion...It's just SW....Deal with it. :)
