Silverhawk2000
Hello, Here is a good one. Is it possible to create a 2 sided grate? I am using the bespin texture breakable_grate_1. On a calked brush, I applied the texture to the top and to the bottom only. I can see the grate from both sides but there is major HALO effect in the distance. How can I avoid this so that I can have a transparent grate (like a fence) which has a visible texture front and back, or in my case bottom and top. Anyone who knows, I would very much appreciate the solution. Thanks in advance, Chreers, Christopher
wedge2211
I think all the grate shaders are visible from both sides. In other words, texture only ONE sie of your grate brush with the grate shader, and the grate will be visible from either side (If your brush is rectangular, you will have 5 caulk sides and 1 grate side). Also, if you're using ANY transparent shader (if you can see through ANY part of it--grates, glass, etc) it should be made a detail brush.
Suicide20
Take a look at the kejim post map, there are grates all over that map.. Basickly, and I've had to do this for a few places in my map, create a simple patch mesh, this can be found in the curves options. Apply your grate texture and move it into place... Simple... I know it only shows one side in the editor, but in game it will look correctly... PS... You may have to use a clip brush under the mesh... Dragarius
Yes, Kejim post is the place to look. The lift at the main entrance that takes you down into the complex is, essentially, a large grate you can see through from both sides. I would look at that as an example. Ack, no, never use a patch mesh when you just want a rectangle! Use a brush for brush-shaped objects! Patches will take longer to compile and affect FPS, and if you use a brush, then you won't have to do the clip thing. Yes, kejim_post and keim_base have grates, artus_mine has a "heavier" grate texture, and the Bespin levels have some other grates. Look at my earlier post, that has instructions on how to do it properly. Or, even better, check out these shots: http://wso.williams.edu:8000/~jshoer/images/shot0073.jpg http://wso.williams.edu:8000/~jshoer/images/shot0075.jpg (Those are from my upcoming WIP, more shots on my Outcast page, the link is in my sig.) That is what you want to do with the grates, right? I used the artus_mine grate textrue, it looks a little thicker and less breakable than the kejim one. Here's how to make this: 1) Make a caulk brush. It doesn't matter how thick it is, as long as it's only as wide and tall as you want the grate to be, but it's generally a good idea to make it only a few units thick. 2) Select the face of the brush that you want to look like a grate. 3) Texture that side with any of the grate textures. 4) Make the brush a detail brush (hit Ctrl+M). You do NOT need to texture any more than one side of the brush with the grate texture, you will see the grate from BOTH sides in game, and you will be able to see through the holes in the grate. wedge2211
Do you have any light entities nearby? I've found that if the grates aren't lit well, you can't see through them as well. try putting some small light entities near your grates.
