Admiral Vostok
One of the things that annoys me about SWGB1 is the weakness of Air units. Air units are too easily countered and defended against (especially without the Air Cruiser). Their stats make no sense: they have the same HP as a trooper, they can't kill any ground forces in one shot like they do in the movies and shielded air costs the same as non-shielded. Now some of these things will probably be amended in SWGB2, but one thing I'd specifically like to see in SWGB2 is a move away from the whole Anti-Air idea. More units should be able to attack air, to balance the beefing up I'd like to see. So I made this thread as a way to discuss what should and should not be allowed to shoot at Air units, and how good they would be at it. First on the Hailfire Droid, which is the only canon AA unit from SWGB1. Strictly speaking it isn't only an Anti-Air unit in the movies. The Hailfire Droid should be good vs Air and Mechs but really weak vs other things. Troopers should all be able to shoot air, including Droidekas and other ranged troop-size units. They wouldn't be very good at it though. Most (but not all) mechs would be good vs air. In the movies we see an AT-AT and an AAT shoot down an Air unit. However there are some Mechs that it wouldn't make sense to allow them to shoot air because of their weapons configuration. Since we all want Unique Unit Sets, this doesn't pose a problem because we don't have to make every "Strike Mech" or whatever able to shoot air. Non-canon units would be needed to even things out, and there might even be some units like the current AA that con only shoot air and not ground, but I think they should be no better vs Air than other mechs. swphreak
I agree completely, but if they beefed up Air units, then all people will build is Air units. I really don't like air units (especially ACs) they're cheap. And in a large group, Air Units can do damage against an army with no AA units. If you want air units, they LA needs to make a Space RTS like homeworld (that game roolz so much). Oh man... I'm rambling again.....
Admiral Vostok
But if you beef up air units while at the same time allowing more things to be able to kill them, it evens out. Like the air in AoM, most things can shoot Air, so they aren't too powerful.
Dagobahn Eagle
Air in GB is perfect. Period.
Darth Windu
Vostok - i pretty much agree with you here. Air does need to be beefed up, but i think the whole way its used needs to be changed as well. Also, i dont think troops should be able to shoot at air, and it should also be only 1 mech from each civ that can shoot at air. BTW where was the AAT shooting down an aircraft? Admiral Vostok
When all the Naboo fly out the Theed hangar that guy gets shot and goes spiralling down to the ground. Kind of doesn't count because the aircraft was on the level with the tank, but the sponsons on either side of the AAT look like they could angle up to shoot air. I think troops should be able to fire on air, but they do hardly any damage. One of the coolest bits in AOTC is when Yoda's Cavalry arrives and all the Battle Droids and Super Battle Droids point their blasters up and start firing away at the Gunships. pbguy1211
well this is a whole new can of worms... air cant be strong vs AA. that said, laser troopers while maybe being able to shoot at air, should have AWFUL accuracy... being a moving target and all... But air should be able to qreck troopers... also... the CIS AA unit also shoots mechs in the movie... food for though...
Admiral Vostok
I know all that pbguy. I'm suggesting getting rid of the whole "Anti-Air" idea and just having units that can either shoot air or not.
pbguy1211
then again it all goes back to siths gameplay>realism
swphreak
that is so old....... anyways, that does sound kinda nice. Have most units be able to shoot Air. Just some can aim better than others. The Hailfire droid should be able to shoot ground too because the missiles shot a mech in the movie. But I still think air is annoying. they're little pests. Air should fight Air. Ground fight Ground
lukeiamyourdad
i think it's okay to have distinctive AA. It brings more stress to the game that you always need AA to defend. Non-shielded fighter should cost less and have a slightly faster built time. The rest is good.

Ground fight Ground That wouldn't be very much realistic in terms of war strategies... Air is used so you don't lose as many lives in terms of real war strategy... you also have greater range and maneuverability... but you don't raid buildings with air... air very much has a purpose... especially in war today... and very much so in a situation like a STAR Wars game... you don't get to the stars by foot! joesdomain
I agree with the idea to allow mechs, troopers, etc. to shoot at air units. They should have different accuracy for each unit. Air units like fighters and bombers should have more hit points, shield points, attack, speed, range, shields, and armor. Fortresses and Anti-air Turrents in the 1st Galactic Battlegrounds ripped apart my fighters and bombers. I also believe since the command center shoots lasers it should also shoot anti-air also. Why not just reduce the anti-air turrents to just laser turrents with anti-air capabilities? Meaning one turrent! In other Star Wars games like Rogue Squadron 3-d laser turrents shot at air units. I also believe Transport should get a weak weapon similar to scout bikes. They should also have the most shields and armor of all air units due to lack of weapons also. Get rid of the air cruiser. Too slow and easly killed by anti-air units and fighters. I believe all bombers should have two weapons(powerful bombs for ground and a weak laser to fight off fighter it comes in contact with or to shoot units like workers or troopers). That adds realism without taking away from gameplay. I know I have said this hundreds of times but have both Imperial Lamda Class Shuttle and Imperial Lander as buildable units in the empire airbase. I think it would be cool to stick with canon at least on the empire airbase. Meanin have Tie Fighters, Tie Interceptors, Tie Advanced, and Tie Bombers. Tie Defenders look to wierd. I am used to the above Empire air.
