single player mods for mac

Hi, I'm like to know if anyone has had luck running single player mods on the mac version of JKII. I have had difficulty: maninly not sure where to put the mod files in the JKII folder. When I've tried placing mod files in the main folder or in the base folder they don't show up in the as files I can select when I go to load mods under "setup" in the single player program. I'd love to get some more action out of the single player part of this game. Let me know if you have any tips.

Hey guys, thanks for the advice. Unfortunately this is how my directory looks: /Applications/Games/Jedi\ Knight\ II/base

I don't seem to have a gamedata folder in the directory. Also I've tried putting mods in the base folder and still can't see them when I boot up the single player game.

Do you have any other tricks or advice? Have you actually gotten single player mods to work on the mac?

Thanks for your help!

Here is the question I sent to Aspyr (not the exact same as your question, Scotawan, but I think it will cover the bases):

When installing mods, skins etc... instructions refer to gamedata folder & base folder. I have no gamedata folder and 3 base folders - 1 in Jedi Knight II:Base, one in Application Support: Jedi Knight II:Base and one in Application Support:Jedi Knight II MP:Base. Please advise on the proper locations to put certain files, i.e. single player mods, multiplayer mods etc...

Thanks

Should hear from them in a day or so. Whether it will help or not...we'll see.

ooh ooh me me! pick me! pick me! i know! okay here's whatcha do, if it's a single player map, look in the read-me file. in that, it should tell you what i like to call "the back-door name". any way, this name is what is used to open up single player levels. the name may be

"war", lets say it is, then when you start up jk2 open up the console (shift ~) and type in "map war" (instead of "war" put the "back-door name" included in the read-me.) if there is not a "back-door name" yer outta luck. then after typing this in, the level should start up, and then after doing this, you can access the level any time on your saved game screen.

if it's a single player mod, then the game should automatically start up in the mod once you put it in your base folder. if not, it don't work. to turn off a mod, simply take it out of your base folder.

hope that helps!

any questions? feel free to ask! you can reach me at steviej07@hotmail.com if necessary.

That's cool Steve-O, I didn't know that. I, for one, have other questions regarding how the mac sets up the file structure & where to put stuff, and helpful though your answer is, it doesn't quite cover all of that, i.e. which base folder? (I have 3).

"out of luck" scenarios leave me fuming, and all too often that happens with mac users. I'm not pinning all my hope on tech support, they certainly weren't any help on the one-button mouse force power issue, but I'm going to drag a complete answer from somwhere.:fett:

Hey guys thanks for those posts:

Nomad thanks for your suggestions, I will check out the MacAddict group. A better machine, a better magazine! Thanks for writing Aspyr. I actually already had, and of course got the "We don't support mods" answer, but they also directed me to this forum, which of course has been very helpful.

Steve-O, your tips were helpful. I was able to load a single player mod called impmine by typing map "map name" in the console as you suggested. I was psyched. I'll be trying out other mods as well, and I will report back.

It's great to get support from your peers.

Thanks, Scotawan.

I would firstly like to say that MACS ROCK!

Yeh, the base they're refering to is the one in the Jedi Knight II folder, the one that you install from the CD, and has the four assets files. (or wotever they are called)

Here's the reply I got from Aspyr:

Aspyr Media Support Response

Howdy,

Please note that we do not offer any support for Mods, skins, or third part downloads.

For most mods and skins, just install the files to the "base" folder located within the JK2 game folder. If the mod states that it must be in its own folder within the "base" folder, then leave the folder structure intact.

I now see you have already written them. Ah well, worth a shot.:fett:

I'll start with the biggest one (thanks for your help by the way Big Steve-O). The funny thing is not so much getting the mod to run, it's getting mods I've gotten for MP to NOT run in SP. For example, I stopped playing SP for a long while. In the meantime, I downloaded several MP mods. When I eventually came back to SP, I had Dooku's saber. So I got rid of that. Then it was a gaffi stick, got rid of that. Almost the entire list of all the Omnimod hilts kept showing up. If I get rid of them, I can't use them in MP. There's nothing I can find in the SP config about hilts or sabers. What do you suggest?:fett:

(BTW- I just noticed your location is the same as mine -RIGHT ON!!)

ok, i've had this same problem. the best thing to do is when you don't want to use a mod, any mod, simply take it out of your base folder and do as i do and create a folder in your jk2 folder (just not in the base!) and store them in there until you want to use them again. then, when you do, put em back in the base. if you want your game to be completely normal, take everything out of the base folder except the assests.

Hey guys, I hadn't been able to check back for a few days, cause it seems like the server was down. Anyhow, I'm glad to see you are still discussing this topic.

Steve-O thanks for your offer of help!

I was actually only able to get one mod to work so far in SP. I ran into difficulty with some of the following mods, even if I figured out the frist map name, when I used the console command "map x" like Steve suggested it came back with a response like, can't find the map x.bsp. etc.

Ok, here is a list of a few mods I've been hoping to try out in SP:

The Sith Reborn

Dark Forces (I just downloaded the demo, I loved this game when it first came out.)

Episode 3

Occupation

Maybe if you could coach me through one or two of these I might get the hang of it. The trick you described above worked greate for the impmine mod (not a great mod) but it was so cool to see it load up when I typed "map mine1"

Hey thanks for the help!

hey scotawan, now worries dude, i gotcher answers. ok, the sith reborn, hmm, don't know that one, sorry, then dark forces i've got this one, i know it works. ok make sure there are no mods in your base folder, then put ALL of the dark forces mod stuff in your base folder. the game should automatically start up in the df mod. occupation, i've got this one too. have you tried typing "map sp_occupation"? i think it may work then. oh, and also a question that i must ask. in the occupation level my kyle character is invisible, uh, why is this? any help? anyway, hope that helps ya scotawan!

Dear Steve-O,

Thanks for the help. I think part of my problem was that I had not taken all the other mods out of the folder. Another problem was that I had decompressed the pkt's of each of these mods which opened them up as a folder. When I just put the uncompressed pkt file in the folder it worked perfectly. I was able to play the df mod, and the episode 3.

DF was quite a blast from the past. Even had the cheesy intro music of the original! I loved it! Next I have to figure out how to cheat and use my lightsaber!

As far as the invisible Kyle in occupation, I remember reading on the author's site that he had fixed this problem in a later release. So check it out. If I find the site again and the referrence I will post it here!

Thanks for your help, it is really good to get extra milage out of the single player part of the game. I guess I shouldn't have looked at all those hints and extended my original play time, lol!

WTF?? It's like Aspyr intentionally took out the mod support... I wonder why PCs are the superior gaming platform...

If you care that much about mods, you're better off using VMware or an emulator for JO, or installing a good Linux distro and running it with WineX.
