Maxtrix Reloaded

Review contains spoilers!

First of all, lemme tell you that I'm a person whom is easily entertained... seeing 200 Jedi go up against a million droids entertains me(Attack of the Clones)... seeing a small group going up against an entire army entertains me(Scorpion King)... seeing a movie in which everything is dubbed in a way that it iss hilarious entertains me(Kung Pow)... even if there are huge plot holes, it doesn't matter as long as the movie entertains me. I really don't try to be one of those boring critics who analyses every frame.

Having said that, the Matrix 2 really, really, REALLY entertained me. The battle between Neo and the Smiths was breath taking, way better than I had ever expected it to be. It just kept going and going, and became more spectacular by the minute. The chase scene... magnificient, beautiful camera work(especially noteworthy is the shot where Morpheus is about to face off with that Agent). The discussion between Neo and the Oracle... very enlightening, I like the program within the Matrix twist. Zion was a great sight to behold. The music was very good, with the "Burly Brawl"(Neo vs. Smiths) being especially noteworthy... love the chores throughout the scene. I got lost a bit with the architect, but I think I understand what is going on... some very nice twists here, especially seeing as how there have been more Matrixes, and apparantly more Chosen Ones.

The ending rather surprised me... it seems that the human race is in real trouble. The prophecy is false, the chosen one made the wrong decision by taking the left door even though Trinity still lives... but I was totally lost when the music swelled up when we saw that last dude laying next to Neo. It was only later that I heard that this guy is the assassin whom tried to attack Neo before and apparantly none other than Agent Smith at the same time. I knew that Smith apparantly entered the real world at some point in Neo's dreams, but I thought that was a prediction for the future, aka Matrix 3. In my opinion, it would've been far more neater if the person had actually been Hugo Weavings. That WOULD have been a twist. For me, it simply was a "Who the heck is that guy?" moment. Some people said that it was Cypher, but I'm pretty sure it was not him.

Also, I really have to question the real world this time... it seems that there have been five Matrixes before, each one created when Zion was destroyed and the Chosen One made the wrong decision. Seeing as how Neo was eventually capable of "sensing" the Sentinels near the end, and even stopping them... and apparantly Smith, a computer program, can actually enter a human mind... what does this mean? Is the real world nothing more than a Matrix within a Matrix? Is the real world actually the Matrix 5.0, and the Matrix they visit is actually the Matrix 6.0? To be honest, it's speculation like this that really makes me enjoy the movie, and will keep me entertained until the Matrix Revolutions comes along.

To be honest, this movie was pretty much flawless, I was entertained throughout the movie, with the action scenes coming at the right time, whilst the quieter scenes were also at the right moment. The only scene that went on for too long was the Zion celebration, alongside Neo and Trinity making out. I appreciate what the celebration was about, but it simply went on for too long.

But put that aside... my advice : just grab a bag of popcorn, some cola, sit down, relax, and enjoy the thrill ride that is the Matrix Reloaded.

nice review burrie

i went to see it last night and well heres what i believe:

the french dude is maybe a previous one who like neo is unplugged. he still can control the matrix and created the twins. maybe he made the keymaker aswell.

smith is now an unplugged virus in the matrix trying to take over control (urge for power i guess) and neo is his main threat for not gettin it. he goes to the real world (i cant see how its possible) and tries to kill neo there. why his character was kept alive after the sentinel attack suprises me as a human is a threat to the machines and smith aswell.

i believe not. one door led to the destruction of all man and machine kind. the other led to some kind of reprogramming the matrix.

The way I got it, the door to Neo's left led to the destruction of all mankind, which also led to the Matrix being restarted, and Zion rebuilt with a specific amount of men and women, roit? All the other Chosen Ones had went through that door, leading to the cycle to repeat itself. In essence, nothing has changed, meaning that they are in trouble as of now.

I really enjoyed the movie for all of these reasons as well! I thought this movie was much better then the first one even! :D I'm just too tired now to go into the deep discussion that this movie has left us with.......I think I need to watch it again though, I kinda got confused there when he met the maker of the matrix......I was pretty tired. Great movie though! :D

Eh, I was kind of disappointed. I thought the action scenes were excellent, even though the Smiths looked kind of fake at times.

The Zion rave/sex scene sucked, and dragged on for way too long.

I thought the story was hard to follow. Seriously, how many of you didn't think the Architect was confusing?

Here's a good link if you didn't catch everything storywise though, it cleared a lot up for me, and made me enjoy the movie a bit more.

The ending came way to abrupt, without any conclusion whatsoever. Speaking of that, I think that too many people think Matrix Reloaded shouldn't be judged until they have seen the complete trilogy? That's absolute crap. It's not half a movie. It's a standalone movie. Just because it's the middle part of a triology doesn't excuse the rotten conclusion. In my opinion a movie is supposed to stand on it's own, not be dependant on the sequel that will appear a few months later. If you compare it to The Empire Strikes Back, at least I thought that had a decent conclusion, and still left us with a few cliffhangers. But those were bearable because you already did get some answers out of the film. I felt like I didn't get that from The Matrix Reloaded.

Anyway, that's just my opinon. I've only seen the movie once so far, I'll probably go see it again sometime. Don't get me wrong, I liked it, I just wasn't as impressed as I wanted to be. The Matrix is still the better film.

Unpopular opinion, but I thought it was a bit of a dud.

I loved the special effects, and I would probably see it again just for that if nothing else, but I thought the; plot/dialogue/10 minute Christina Aguilera video-clip - sucked! Or maybe not sucked, but sub-expectations or the quality of its predecessor.

To me the plot seemed to overdo the philosophical sub-contexts to the point of obscurity, and the dialogue was so cliche in bits, I felt almost embarrassed for the actors who had to deliver the lines. I’m fully aware that the first was cheesy to the extreme in parts too, but I thought Reloaded was just excessive. I don’t know, the sum of its parts just didn’t seem to add up to me.

I'll through in another theory into the loop. What if the real world is a failed matrix, or program, and the matrix was built into the failed matrix, [spoilerS AHEAD] maybe thats the reason Neo could sense the Sentinels and then kill them. So the working matrix and Zion Matrix, are all one program. Remember in the original Matrix, Agent Smith told Morpheus about the 1st Matrix, and how it was a failure, what if somehow people awoke from that matrix and created Zion in the failed matrix, but still the Machines had control over the program, so they created another matrix inside of the other. You may ask why doesn't the Machines just delete the people who awoke from the failed matrix? Lets just say all of Zion is a failed program, in other words, humanity is like Agent Smith, they are always hiding themselves inside code of the matrix, making it hard for the machines to delete the Zion humans.

My thoughts are kind of aligned with yours LG. I think that there's a Matrix inside of a Matrix and that what they think is the real world is still the Matrix(which is why Neo could sense the Sentinels ;)). The Architect says that 99% of the people in the Matrix except it as the real world. The other 1% would cause problems for that 99% so(IMo) they created the 'outer' Matrix for those who wouldn't except the Matrix as real.

This is a personal theory and not really a spoiler but:

I think Neo is a program. They kind of hinted at the fact that he was. The Oracle mentioned about the programs that are to be deleted that don't go into hiding to to the source which is where the Keymaker tells Neo he must go.

There were other things I noticed that I can't think of right now. :)

A little off topic: Did you notice in the Revolutions trailer when Neo is fighting Smith and all the Smiths are watching that in the windows of all the buildings in the background every window has a Smith standing in it?

well i believe

neo could stop those sentinels in the real world as he switched codes with smith, and as smith had control over them neo has power over em too. and i dont think zion is another matrix as we see bane/smith cut his hand. thats smith trying to feel the pain it causes when you are hurt. if it would have been another matrix, he couldnt have felt that and there was no point in cuttin himself. ;)

[spoilers ahead]

I've just saw it for the second time a few hours ago :D

It was a pretty damn good show, but yea, I agree about there being a tad too much philisophical babble..the Architect's speech was a bit too much to absorb the first time I saw it.

In that way I felt the first movie was better but you can't beat the combat of Reloaded. Well except they could of had some more gunplay more like the lobby scene of the original.

The ending came way to abrupt, without any conclusion whatsoever. Speaking of that, I think that too many people think Matrix Reloaded shouldn't be judged until they have seen the complete trilogy?...

I sort of felt that too, I actually did think "it's not exactly ESB" when the big TO BE CONTINUED... just popped up. Though since Revolutions is coming in a little, it ain't so bad for me ;).

The Architect says that 99% of the people in the Matrix except it as the real world. The other 1% would cause problems for that 99% so(IMo) they created the 'outer' Matrix for those who wouldn't except the Matrix as real. [+ stuff spolier tagged]

That's what I got from it, and seems like that is where The One has to go as part of the 'cycle'?. Though I'm keeping the idea that Zion is another 'Matrix' tucked in the back of my mind.

With regards to the spoiler tagged bit, I remember the Architect saying that "you remain irrecoverably human" (or something like that) but yea, the other stuff the Architect says, I think, does suggest that something happens to him.

the french dude is maybe a previous one who like neo is unplugged. he still can control the matrix and created the twins. maybe he made the keymaker aswell.

hmm, the Keymaker's purpose(I think)was to guide "The One" to the source, and the french guy program says he survived the other "One"s so everytime "The One" ends up being guided back to him...okay now I have muddled myself up..can't remember what I was thinking lol, well anyway that is interesting :)

The Revolutions trailer was alright, I remember the Smiths watching as a Smith and Neo do the simultaneous punch..heh..that was funny, reminded of cartoons for some reason

  • 3 weeks later...

I believe Neo is a program, as when smith tries to turn him into another agent he says something like "we aren't that different mr.anderson" which would indicate they're cut from the same cloth. E.g possible that the first One was an agent that defied the system or something?
