jk2 crashes help!

When I have had problems like this it is usually a hardware problem, specifically inadequate cooling. Jedi Outcast pushes your hardware very hard. One way to see this to start Windows Task Manager. Look at the CPU Usage History graph on the Performance tab before you launch Jedi Outcast, it should be hovering near the bottom, depending on what other programs are running. Then launch Jedi Outcast, and watch CPU usage go to 100% and stay there. If you have a fan-temperature-voltage monitoring program like Hardware Doctor, you can see the motherboard temperatures start rising as soon as you launch the game, before you even start playing! How many fans does your case have? I built my computer in a case with marginal cooling. It ran general apps just fine, but if I played JO for awhile the temperatures went up and the keyboard locked up. I moved the computer to a case with SIX fans, and now it runs fine. Your description of crashing after 2-4 minutes is typical of heat buildup failure. You probably need better cooling.

OMG, 1 fan?!!! No wonder!! Your computer will run fine for web surfing, Microsoft Office, etc. but 3D FPS games are a whole other world. It could be any or more than one of the following overheating:

-motherboard chipset

-video card

-RAM

-CPU

Gamers usually have setups with multi-fan cases, high-performance CPU coolers, motherboards that have fans or at least a heatsink on the chipset, fan on the videocard, etc. I also have heatsinks on my RAM, and rounded IDE and floppy cables that don't restrict airflow as much as flat cables. Another computer with an older case has a larger fan using an adapter, and a heatsink-fan combo for the hard drive. The hardcore overclockers use liquid cooling or even refrigeration-based cooling.

My advice is get a new case. A nice one is the Antec Lanboy, which you can get for less than $90. My favorite place for cases is here:

I have the same problems, though occasionally it'll last as long as 10 minutes before locking up. I have to hit the reset button.

It is not my processor temp either. Mine has been in the recommended ranges since I built it over a year ago. Additionally, I've had no other problems with the 20+ other games I've purchased since then.

I've noticed that some people are mentioning various sound errors in much the same circumstances, and I'd put some green down on the theory that these crashes have something to do with the sound. I never experienced these freezes with either 1.0 or 1.3 versions.

I'm averse to re-installing and going back to 1.03 as 1.04 is a bit of an improvement so if anyone knows anything about this it would be appreciated. The prospects of another patch look a bit slim IMO.:(

I played Quake 3 for a long time with no problems, D2 for a long, long time with no problems. But then I installed Morrowind, and that game would lock-up my computer completely- video locked, and sound caught in a super-fast stutter. Can't Alt-Tab or Ctrl-Alt-Del out of it, have to hit RESET.

I un-installed Morrowind (didn't like it anyway) and I thought the problem went away, but I eventually got JK2:JO. Like the giant said in Twin Peaks, "It is happening again."

It's also now happening in Diablo2. Both D2 and JO run off the CD, and both lock-up whether they're playing in the CD drive or the DVD drive. Quake3, which doesn't require the CD in the drive, has never locked-up. Could it be my drives? I've already downloaded the latest Nvidia driver...

Any guesses would be helpful and appreciated. I'm already convinced I'll explore the cooling issue, but why would Q3 run ok, but not Jedi Outcast?

When I lose the first battle with Desaan and he gets in his ship and takes off the game is supposed to go to some cut scenes, but my screen just goes black. I can still hear some sound, but nothing ever happens and then it says I died. Any ideas?

Well, Jedi Outcast is a HEAVILY modified version of the Q3 Engine, so it has much higher demands from the CPU and video card, and with only one fan, which may only be putting out 2700-5400RPM, you may not be getting adequate cooling to the processor, also, if you have Advanced EAX enabled under the sound options, be sure to turn it off as there is a huge conflict between Jedi Outcast and EAX, despite the patches which were SUPPOSED to fix the problem.

Try listing all your hardware specs like CPU, MOTHERBOARD, VIDEO CARD, OS, SOUND CARD, MEMORY, HD Size, etc.
