pleto4_ryan
ok i knew it was gonna be hollywood messed up, but not so much I just read an article of the film that is coming, The League of extraordinary gentlemen...actually it is based on the comic books of Alan Moore("Watchmen") and Kevin O'Neill. Well the story was intigued not only of the literature-morph but also the characters... well they messed the chars a lot... Mina who was the chief of the league is just a part now and her personalitie changed. She was brave, strong, ready for everything , a chief-mind, and a great talker...and much cold but that was due to her adventures with dracula ("bram stocker") Never in the comic has she used any vampiric powers they were only inclined but in the film her role is that "one vampire", as it sais at the poster. Her personalitie was like that because of the things she saw not that she was a vampire. they messed it...(and not only saying that she was the chief and part of the group because of her brains. Now she is there cause of her powers) Quartermain...was one weik one at the start of the comic, and drug user lost in his memories, problems, and had ruined his self-esteem....and then by the time and his affection with mina and her talking him he regained his previous braviness. Now he is the chief, serious and he is always right. They totally ruined the char to make one unmistakable-hollywood one. As for the Skinner "invisible man" he was a mad man, killing without pity, using his powers to rape virgins, and now he has become oinbe mysterie man.....damn.... Captain nemo was a genious. Clever, with many powerful weapons ready to get in battle and save the day...VERY serious and very "steady". NOW? he has phycological problems as for mr.Hyde. dunno exactly, but he was a REAL monster...worse than Skinner. The article sais that they made him more sane. I guess they messed him with Hulk. Hyde killed hundrens of men without thinking of it and always plan to harm the others. He is clever and SO mean...i wonder and to conclude all this they went and added Tom Sawyer as an american spy (for the sake of the americans, they couldn't held out, couldn't they...) and dorian gray as the immortal one (nothing to say about dorian ) and to end it at last ... They changed the bad guy. It was so clever to put mister M as the BIG ONE (moriarty, serlock holmes big enemy) but....they changed that also.... opinions? Moosferatu
I saw it a few days ago and I wasn't impressed either. Mind you, I have never read the original, so I didn't know what it was supposed to be like. It was just plan bad. The screwed the characters for one thing. The plot and plot twist were horrible, for another. Finally, the special effects were horrible. Some of them even reminded me of stuff from movies like Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. It was really bad. I did like Skinner, and found him to be quite funny, though.
remixor
I am a big fan of Alan Moore's original comic, and I honestly couldn't even believe how terrible the film adaptation was. It was horrible. I mean, it failed as a translation of book to film, and it failed as a movie in its own right. It did not possess the cleverness of Moore's writing, the grittiness of Kevin O'Neill's stylized artwork, or even action scenes worthy of a big Hollywood summer movie. It was laughably bad. It pains me to pan it so thorougly, because I was really really hoping it would at least sort of live up to the book; it didn't even come close. The only satisfaction I can savor is that Sean Connery, who starred in this film because he was already a huge fan of Moore's comic, thought the movie was terrible, and publically admitted as such. He also got in huge creative arguments with the director over the course of the film. I'm still waiting for Hollywood to put out a comic book movie that rivals the original work. Until the mentality of comics as childish entertainment is somehow eroded, I can't see that happening. Burton's Batman was a pretty good example, I thought, but I think there's still a lot of room for improvement. EDIT: On second thought, Ghost World was a really good translation of Daniel Clowe's comic. I just finished watching that film for the first time, which is why I didn't mention it the first time around. The story is quite different but it retains the mood and point of Clowe's original work (the fact that he co-wrote the film helped, I'm sure). Also, Road to Perdition was a really good movie in my opinion, though I haven't read the original comic so I can't comment on its loyalty to that. C Shutt
Haven't seen the movie yet, and don't really plan to, but there's no way it could be as horrible an adaption as "From Hell" was.

remixor
You're right in saying that only the first book has been out for a while, but many comics beyond the six compiled in that book have already come out. If you want to buy individual comics, you can read the story much faster than if you just buy the trade paperbacks. Of course, it's a lot cheaper and easier to just buy the books when they're released.
