  1. Oh, a Substack? Check out Dominic Cummings over here.

In all seriousness, this thread has made me realise that the internet is pretty devoid of interesting reads, beyond news sites and random articles discovered via aggregators. Somewhere along the way I got out of the habit of just browsing. That's pretty sad. Come on! There must be something out there! Don't make me read a Remi blog like it's 2001!

  2. Whoa whoa whoa. I was asking about this insane CD-ROM version of Psychonauts. Wing Commander IV barely installed the executables, never mind anything else, and I spent way too much money on the DVD version back in the day. It was a sneak peek at what it would be like to be @elTee.

  3. I had no idea. My brain went to Wing Commander IV rather than Phantasmagoria, but it's the same deal. Imagine still thinking it was a good idea to ship a game on multiple CD-ROMs nearly ten years after my favourite FMV-fest.

At least with those old school games you got a sense of achievement as you advanced through the CD-ROMs. Except when you had to swap back to disc 1 because you died. I'm curious to know too - did the FMV get streamed from the CDs, or was it all installed? It was installed, right? It must have been installed. Right?

I still have the envelope and letter from Gabez 🙂 its in one of the copies of the classic adventures bundle 🙂

How long will it be until the letter from Gabez is a collector's item in itself? Anyone's home would be improved by some signed SCUMM Bar newsletter comics on the wall.

  5. Whoa that icon is cool. And much better than the boring one they actually went with, as far as I'm concerned!

Are you saying that the data for the cool icon is actually on the duplicated Monkey Island 2 disks, but you can only access it by digging into the filesystem as it's been "deleted"?

Someone needs to re-upload all the Monkey Island 1 icon images from the archived thread Benny linked before. Definitely the coolest Amiga icon in the business, especially with a suitable colour palette. The Workbench 1.3 palette worked out pretty well, but I'm led to believe that the Monkey 1 disk itself somehow defined an even better one?

The photographs for the Mojo Does Cardiff article have been mysteriously missing in action for something like ten years. Fortunately, @s-island was able to correctly interpret the glyphs faintly etched upon a series of windswept runestones in order to divine the secret location of a backup of the article's complete photo gallery, and now one of Mojo's most irrelevant articles is once again an honest to Pete multimedia experience.

This is great, but who are the humans in these photos? There's the one with the face, and the other one with the hair and also a face, and then there's Gabez. I know that one. How do I know what Gabez looks like? I don't know. And there might be a fourth human form faintly visible on the boundary between this dimension and the next, I'm not sure, I can't be bothered double checking even though it would have taken less time than writing this bit.

And then there's a picture of a train ticket. Train tickets! I remember those. I even remember the ones like in your picture where they said "Rail Settlement Plan" over and over in the background like some demented government spokesman stuck in a groove. Is this a security measure? Were they expecting would-be ticket forgers to fall asleep before they could manage to copy and paste these boring words enough times to fill an entire fake ticket? Still, I can't help but think that something has been lost with the move away from "Rail Settlement Plan". Something comforting. Like a warm blanket enveloping you, dry and not drenched in a tramp's piss, a stark contrast to the interior of the train you are about to enter. Oh look, it's cancelled. And so are all the other trains for the rest of the day. And now my rail replacement bus is on fire. Never mind. Rail settlement plan. Rail settlement plan. Rail settlement plan.

...is the sort of thing I would have posted if I hadn't eventually spotted that the first link explains who everyone is, it's only if you click the second link by itself like a big buffoon that you get confused by the lack of context. Good job I didn't do that then.

  7. You haven't truly solved an adventure game puzzle until you've used everything with everything, exhausted every line of dialogue, used everything with everything again (just in case), then finally realised there's an entire room you haven't walked into yet which contains all the answers to your problem.
