flabajaba2213
OK! I don't know if this is explained later, or if it is explained in the EU, but... I was watching episode I again, and I have been contemplating Palpatines guards. They wear blue robes, blue helmets, and carry long staves. Now, I started thinking..... Give them some red robes, some red helmets, a "saber lance"(?), and some force powers, and you have the elite, royal guard guys from the origional trilogy. Hmmmmm..... Any thoughts on the subject? Am I on the right track? Should I just stop while I am ahead and think that I am smart? later all. BTW, FIRST THREAD POSTED! Please, be gentle...... Lynk Former
yes you are, the guards that protect Palpy were converted to the elite Royal Guards, according to EU they were a select group of Elite Stormtroopers who were the ones who were able to become Royal Guards. Of course the guards that protected Palpy back in ep1 weren't stormies XD but the attire was converted over to the Royal Guard style we say RotJ
coupes.
you can actually see the red 'imperial' guards in AotC, but I can't remember in which scene this was.
jedispy
The weapon the royal guards carry is called a force pike. They are not lightsabers like many people would like to think. A force pike operates much in the same manner as vibro weapons. http://www.starwars.com/databank/technology/vibroax/eu.html A vibro-ax is a type of bladed weapon that uses a compact ultrasonic generator to create vibrations along the cutting edge's surface. This drastically increases the weapons lethality, allowing it to lacerate with minimal exertion from the wielder. Similar vibration-based technology can be found in vibroblades, bayonets, and force pikes. One thing that is obvious it that it is used in conjunction with the martial art echani that the royal guards master. I imagine that while force pikes are not lightsabers, they are most likely used in much of the same manner. Even more so, I would be willing to bet that they could use force pikes and lightsabers interchangably, both effectively lethal. Jedispy

Blademaster_109
wow, your right. i just rewatched episode 1 too. I bet they are the same gards. They might be because anakin marries her, so maybe when he turns to the dark side he takes the gaurds with him or something. I don't know but good subject. coupes.
they are not Anakin/Darth Vader's guards, they are the chancelor/emperor's.

Admiral Vostok
You're right, CoupeS, the Red-cloaked guards are seen in the scenes in Palpatine's office. They're particularly noticable in the scene with just Palpatine and Anakin, when Anakin asks Palpatine to convince Padme to go back to Naboo. B00thbe
It would be cool to see a group of royal guards swarm a jedi and take him out. It would show how powerful they really are.

It would show how well they have been trained and why they guard the emperor and not some siths.

Pedro The Hutt
About the guards being able to wield lightsabers, I don't know, several sources indicate that a non-Force sensitive wielding a saber is downright dangerous for both the one using it and those around him. That and it would ruin the entire "Lightsabers are for Force users only" thing.
vegietto
i don't think they have lightsabers i agree they our the same guards but they i don't think have lightsabers

You'd need a lot of them. They wouldn't be able to block a Jedi's sabre. The sabre would cut straight through their weapon. I remember someone saying that light sabres are supposed to explode if activated by a non-force user because you need the force to keep the crystals in harmony. That can't be right though, because Han uses a light sabre in TESB.
Pedro The Hutt
That and it would go against the way of the Jedi, they'd never forgive themselves if a regular civilian somehow got their hands on their lightsaber and blew themselves to bits. So naw, that's probably an idea from a fanfic.
