toms
im finally catching up on all the films i wanted to watch.... Italian Job - THis was actually WAY better than I expected. NOt in the same class as the original, but luckily (and very sensibly) it really didn't attempt to copy the original at all. A few of the names were the same, and there were minis. But that was about the extent of the similarities. Also, I expected it to be your usual XXX/2F2F style OTT cgi explosion and gun fest. However they took more of a crime thriller route, with a slower pace, no gunfights and most of the excitement coming from tense, against the clock, safecracking and the setup of the job. All the actors were pretty cool, with nice charisma. - Is Donald Sutherland really tall and i never noticed? or is mark wahlberg really tiny? like, tom cruise tiny? THe only thing I found a bit disappointing was the end. I spent the whole movie expecting an awesome car chase at the end, with them attempting to outdo the original film. However there wasnt really a car chase, there was hardly anyone chasing them anyway and they didn't really make use of the LA landmarks. Also, i was expecting at least one more twist or double cross at the end. However, apart from the slightly lackluster ending i found it one of the more enjoyable movies of the year (not that that is saying much so far...) and im glad i didn't boycott it on principle like some of my mates are doing. 7.5 out of 10. Darklighter
Gonna have to agree with you on pretty much all the points there I'd forgotten what it was like going to the cinema without any preconceptions of what the film would be like (i.e., no spoilers beforehand). I really wasn't expecting much from this film, but in the end, it turned out to be damn good fun. Like you said toms, it doesn't attempt to copy the original at all...in fact there are a few lil gimmick references to the first film in it, which was a nice touch I thought ^^ I just thought the whole plot was very well calculated and thought out. There was this big build up til the final job at the end, and as stated before, the focus on suspense was really great. It was less about the action and more about the cleverness of the stunts...some just made me go "Wow! I didn't see that one coming!" XD Great acting too, there were some real laugh out loud moments, and the cast worked really well together. Like you said as well toms, I thought the ending felt a little rushed and empty, but at least it was a happy ending XD It was a minor drawback. All in all, I thought it was great, well worth shelling your money out for ^^;
Elijah
I liked to movie quite abit... I never saw the first one though. Just curious, but why are people Boycotting it?
StormHammer
Well, I haven't seen the remake yet, so I can't judge it. But in my view the original is a 'classic', and didn't really need to be remade at all. Michael Caine was simply superb in the role, and it was laced with some great humour. It also has one of the most recognised quotes (if you're a film buff)... "You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!!" I'll wait for the remake to make it's way onto DVD and then rent it and watch it. I don't really feel like going to a cinema to watch it... Just curious, but why are people Boycotting it? Cos it is a classic, that people felt shouldn't have been messed with. Think of it as if someone remade Star Wars in a few years time. (appart from GL of course, although actually he is doing a worse job of "remaking" starwars than these guys did of the italian job. ) I think it would have done a lot better in the UK if they had just changed the name and left it as a cool thriller with the odd reference to the italian job. By actually CALLING IT the italian job they alienated a lot of fans of the original.
jokemaster
Secret to enjoying movie: Don't go seeing it as if though it's a remake of the original, go see it like any other movie.
