Why are they making another game like that?

There i enough of them.

You could say that about FPS games in general. ;)

Personally, I don't think there are ever 'enough' games that cover a particular set of events, like World War II. It was such a large-scale affair that impacted so many people from different countries and cultures, that it obviously has a certain fascination and appeal.

When you compare the number of World War II games that have been made to the number of World War II movies...then you start to realise this is just a small drop in a large ocean.

In my view, the point of making any game like this is to tell a 'story' in the context of the events. So in those terms, there are a great many stories that could still be told in a WWII setting. Indeed, I think lessons could be learned from looking at some of the better WWII movies out there, to explore different avenues. The better stories are not simply all about 'action', but in a more well-rounded experience, including forming bonds with comrades, love interests, getting captured and escaping...etc., etc.

It would also be good to see a WWII game in one of the newer engines...

Actually, many millions died, not thousands.

By definition, First Person Shooters are about killing things. So why do people want to play games about killing things anyway? I guess we all have our own reasons.

As for making games based on a real war, or other events. I guess that's in part a way of people exploring the issue through a variety of different media. Why are films made about that era? Some people say it does little more than 'glamorise' the violence and human suffering. Others say it helps them to understand what went on during that time, if they didn't experience it first hand. Some focus on the courage of those involved...and others on the horror of it all. And still others will say it's a way to 'remember' this episode in our history, so we never forget the consequences of war on such a massive scale.

As far as games go...they are action-oriented, and regardless of the deeper lessons to be learned about WWII, a war will always provide a platform for 'action-oriented' gameplay.

So far, I think more effort has actually been made in games covering this period to show the consequences of war. You see your ally buddies dying around you...and while playing MOH:AA I did on occasion reflect on how real people living through those kinds of situations must have felt. So in a way...it was a way of me 'stepping into the shoes' of those who took part in the war.

As long as the game developers dealing with content based on real-life take the time to reflect on that period, and try to convey it respectfully in a meaningful way, I don't think there is a problem making a game about it.
