Cotty1
I'm looking for some help. I'm basically brand new to editing, mapping or what ever you guys call it, however, after trying my hand previously, i decided that i wanted to set myself a few goals, even if it was just creating a map for myself to play within JA. The situation is, i'm doing my map, so far i think i've got about 150 'brushes', and just out of curiosity, i tried to bsp the map. After reading the GTK Radiant's tutorial on what bsp meant etc, thats what i thought i would need to do, to see if the size of the brushes or the map was correct for what i wanted to do. The problem is, and i know i might get flamed for this, but does it mean that if i bsp the map file, this can be used within the game? I also would like to know when i'm bsp'ing the map file, i'm presuming its called the console; it brings up errors. Two i've encountered are map leaked, and :- ************ ERROR ************ Backwards tree volume How can i put these problems right. I've done numerous google searches, and the articles i'm finding within forums etc, are explaining the situation, but for a newbie at this, i don't have much idea on how to put the problem right. Any help would be much appreciated, and if you guys don't have time, but know any links for tutorials for newbies that explain in plain english, then i would be very grateful. Thanks in advance Cotty
WadeV1589
A leak is just that, a way the inside of your map can see the outside of your map. Imagine in about 50 years when we build a nice dome on the moon to inhabit, when you're inside that dome you are totally separated from space outside. Space is endless but the dome is rather limited and blocks you entering space. Now imagine someone left a hole in one of the walls, the result would be the inside of the dome would be exposed to space - very bad! A map leak is just the same, the inside of the map where the player can safely be is exposed to the vast void (space) surrounding the map - very bad! Maps must be sealed, an area you can move around in but not freely move away from. To fix the backwards tree volume hit the button on the toolbar that looks like two arrows, one green, one blue, pointing in a circle. Do this before you try and seal your map (before you try and fix leaks).
Cotty1
Thanks for the reply, that makes much more sense than some of the replies i've gotten from some of the other forums i've posted on. I'm going to be completely numb here and ask, how can i seal the map? Do i just have to do a brush then hollow it out, and make sure it covers the whole area of my map, or do i have to do something else to seal it? Again, many thanks
WadeV1589
A sealed map means you make your map out of boxes, think of a hampster cage, they come in tons of different shapes and sizes but all are sealed to the point the hampster cannot possibly get out, they don't have to be hollowed out squares, they can be any shape (please don't say 'what about the air holes?' or I'll shove a lightsaber down your throat ) What you NEVER do is make a map - i.e. the ground/walls/doors and then surround it all in a huge box. Do this and you'll get a lightsaber down your throat and one up your you know what!
wedge2211
One thing you mentioned that Wade didn't touch on: Originally posted by Cotty1 The problem is, and i know i might get flamed for this, but does it mean that if i bsp the map file, this can be used within the game? In GtkRadiant, you edit .map files, which are effectively just lists of brushes, entities, and coordinates. The game can't read these files. A .map file must be compiled into a .bsp file, which is essentially a type of map file that the game can read that also includes information on which parts of the map are visible from other areas, and lighting information. When you want to open your map in JA, open the console by pressing the [~] key and type "devmap yourmapname" Good luck maping!
BongoBob
I'll say the same thing to you that I've said to about a dozen other new mappers out there...Richdiesel. Richs Mappign Tutorials Should explain just about everything. Just download Pakscape and maybe the JKAMP SDK.

Yeah...it took me a few days to get used to calling blocks of stuff "brushes"... though having just typed "blocks of stuff", unable to think of a better word...I'll just shut up
