A Crazy Idea for SWBF II

I know we're still a few months away from the release of swbf, but I've got an idea for the sequel/major expansion. I've never played Savage: the Battle for Newerth (I think that's what it's called), but I think in the sequel to swbf they should do something similar, without all the resource harvesting and stuff. Basically what I envision is a system where each side has a base, and in the center is a command post. Here, a player plays the comander for their side (they would be in the center of the "war room") and would have a rts-like map (with fog of war and everything). The commander could coordinate attacks for their side, selecting units on his map and posting waypoints that only he and the player he selected can see. He could direct pilots to construct turrets in cetain positions (based on where he sees an attack coming from), direct resupply units to the players that need it, and basically coordinate the entire strategy for his/her squad.

The unique thing that would set this appart from Savage is that the commander would still be a regular unit, so if he's watching on his map and sees that the base he is physically in is about to be breached, he could exit the command mode and start shooting the intruders (but also leaving his troops without info/support). One of the problems I've heard Savage has is that when there is a crappy commander the team usually looses and everyone gets pissed at him, so if this situation happens, you could just head to your base's command center and cap him in the head (because he'd be physically standing there), and then you could take over yourself. Another dimension this could add would be the commander could have the ability to reward obedient/exemplary players with bonuses (i.e. maybe every 2 mins. he could grant a player of his choosing a promotion which entails +1 damage or maybe +5% health or some other type of bonus that would be capped at like maybe 2/3 promotions per player so that no one player would be insanely powerful).

I know it's REALLY premature to be talking about the sequel right now, but do you think something like this would be cool in the next one? Should it be a gameplay option?

obviously we all want this to be the best game ever the first time around. If it is though, I can guarantee a sequel (look at kotor, halo, splinter cell etc.). My main question is if you think this would be a fun addition to the combat system. I also wanted to mention that I did not know that battlefield will be doing something similar (I wasn't trying to steal any ideas). Part of the reason I think this would be so cool is because in most of the sw movies we get a shot of the "War room" (e.g. count dooku in the clones with that big holographic map) and there's always been an interest for me about what goes on there, just like the mystery behind NORAD in that big mountain in the southwest. Plus I think it would add an extra dimension of strategy (which is always a good thing in my opinion, espec. in shooter games which would be pretty dull without strategy).

I like the premise of savage, and it could possibly work in a SW setting. That'd be really interesting, but I think Savage has it's own problems to work out before the combo-genre spreads. I heard Savage had wierd lag problems, and it certainly hasn't recieved enough attention. Lucasarts wouldn't take such a new idea while it's still in such a primary stage. Maybe when a savage II comes out, and that catches on, Lucasarts coudl make a similar game.

But if they do make a game like this, I'm not sure it should be a BattleFront II. That will be an implication that will confuse a lot of people. People won't know what to expect and it won't succeed. Maybe as a new game, but not as a sequal to a different type of game.

If any of you have played natural selection for half life, i think it's somewhat similar here. You have a commander who dishes out orders to go and set up checkpoints and build bases to secure key areas. He can then upgrade weapons and such to help the fight go better in your favor. It kind of had a real time strategy tip to it but you could play as one of the many faceless soldiers that you train. Personally i found the idea fascinating but the gameplay left a little to be desired as the levels were not big and open, mainly corridors and the like but if done right with open fields and bases to be captured here and there, it would be an awesome idea for battlefront.
