Nagging issue I always wondered

In the films "starfighters" such as the xwing, TIE series and so on are seen fighting in space and only landing and taking off from land based positions, not fighting within a planet's atmosphere.

In the games however you see them attack ground targets and dogfight above the ground. So if they're able to do that what's the purpose of the (snow)speeder? If you have A, B, E, T, Y and X wings why have another fighter which can't fly in space, doesn't have shields and is lightly armed?

It was my understanding that Star fighters fought only in space, hence the name, and speeders were for atmospheric combat. Why mingle the roles for the starfighters? Why take away a speeder's purpose?

Imagine how quickly an X-wing could destroy AT-ATs and ground forces, if we apply the recent logic to the films couldn't the rebels have mopped up the Imperial invasion force on Hoth with a pair of X-wings and some proton torpedos? Yeah, yeah someone remind me that they used them as escorts.

Sorry but I like things to have their niche.

you have a good point. while they can be used on the ground, tey lose some of their manueberabilty and such in atmosphere. I'm guessing the snowspeeders are cheaper, and they were never meant to take on ATATs they were meant as scouts to look around. It would be a waste to use X-wings for that. and during the evacuation, they needed all the X-wings they had available.

I always used the analogy of fighter planes and helicopters. Starfighters are like jets (duh) which are mainly used for high altitude dogfights and interceptions. Things like snowspeeders are more like helicopter gunshops which are used a lot closer to the ground, and mainly are used in air to ground combat.

It isn't a perfect analogy, I know. :)

Well, the snowspeeder has some advantages, like the harpoon, maneuverability, th ability to have 2 players, and X-wings, etc., aren't equipped for hoth. The frigid planet is really cold, and the snowspeeder is built for that. the devs will probaly incorporate that.

I've thought of that analogy too, and heard it before. I posed this same question to the boys at Galactic Conquest about 10 months ago. That could be right, but it seems that if you have this wonder weapon known as the starfighter why would you need anything else? The only real answer could be cost effectiveness. Still it makes me feel weird using speeders for maybe 1 map while we'll use X-wings on the others.

Well, I admit it's a little bit weird. I read that they really think about what vehicle to use on what map, but I don't think putting an X-wing on any map makes sense. TIE-fighters give me less worry, in a lot of books they were used for planetary assault. Jedi starfighter isn't a problem either. But the naboo starfighter has the same problem of the X-wing again.

I really don't know. Note that we haven't seen any screenshot at all of those fighters, do maybe that got a big suprise/solution for us...

In Rebel Strike for Gamecube you get to fly X-Wing after disabling all the AT-AT's on Hoth. But that happens in high air, it's so high I couldn't even see the ground when looking, barely. So I'm guessing that's sort of a new official part (game's by LucasArts after all), we didn't get to see it, but while Rebels attempted to flee their Hoth base TIE-Fighters may have attacked in the high sky.
