coupes.
I would love to see Wolf-Sauron get it on with Huan and I also think that seeing Glaurung and Ungoliant woud be awsome. Then youd understand that Smaug aund Shelob are nothing compared to them...

Redwing
Hobbit: Yes, definitely. As long as they bring back both Ians, and Peter Jackson directs. TV or movie, it's a great idea. Silmarillion: No, at least not in the traditional movie format.

And now, I bet you're going to reply "there are... 500 pages, with the appendices, no kidding". :|

My Unfinished Tales book has 611 pages, and it contains many of the same stories, except that it goes deeper down in descriptions and such... absolutely worth a read if you enjoyed the Silmarillion
Rad Blackrose
I don't know if anyone has confirmed it, but after some downtime, Peter Jackson said he would be willing to do the Hobbit as well. The Silmarillion would be impossible, due to the reasons pointed out in this thread... Such as lack of dialogue, the fact that it courses over many years, etc. Sure, it would be cool to see Earendil's voyage, or Fingolfin vs. Morgoth, or the story of Turin, but there's so much missing from the fold that it wouldn't be feasable doing it. Black Knight of Keno
The Hobbit's rights have allready been gaven to Jackson, so he will do the film. Silmarillion tho' needs huge advances on special effects. The battle of Helm's deep took a lot of resources, so think of ALL the battles and happenings. And the lenght. If you would want to make one movie from it and put all the events there, it would take something like 10-15 hours. That's why Jackson took huge pieces from the LotR-trilogy. Damn him for eternal fire of Mount Doom...
manoman81
I can't wait for him to do The Hobbit. I think he did an awesome job with the LOTR trilogy.
Sabretooth
Forget it. It's no use trying to make a prequel. *remembers SW prequel horror*
Doomie
Maybe they could make the silmarillion in chapters....

After all, the Hobbit came first; it's already written, and everyone already knows the material is great.
toms
it would be nice to see the big battles, the tough bad guys and the epic events and journeys... I always liked the story of Morgoth (Sauron's boss) & Ungoliant (mega-Shelob) putting out the lights of the world (Trees and orbs both). oh, and i liked the hidden city finally being discovered by that army of balrogs and dragons, and that epic journey across the Hellcraxe ice... The silmarillion could be hard work, but once i got into it i really enjoyed it. It is pretty short. I tried Unfinished Tales, but i didn't get very far... it is a lot harder work. I have it somewhere so i may try and finish at some point.

I don't think The Hobbit would suffer the same fate as the SW prequels.
