Space Sims... Dead? Help!

d'oh!

I guess the era of space simulations, such as X-Wing and Freespace Series', etc. is pretty dead right now.

There are so few players of them, and a lot of the greatest titles are sold out and hard to find.

can anybody tell me where there are some popular ones?

I already have all of the X-Wing Series, there are about 15 people online for multiplayer on X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance (MSN Gaming Zone) and that's the only place to find them. The Freespace Series' PXO.net service is down... I can't find anywhere to buy freespace 2 either.

yes, i also know there are others out there, such as "wing commander" and "privateer" and such, but those are old... probably not to many people with those either..

as for Freelancer, it's more a RPG, and StarLancer is not very good at all.

so...

are there ANY popular ones out there? ones that i could buy? ones that are popular? new?

someone helpful please help me...

I think we're all in the same boat. I've been hoping for another quality space-flight-battle sim since I finished Freespace 2. I haven't heard anything that even remotely resembles what I want.

The new Galaxies Hyperspace expansion is supposed to be close, but I don't want to get involved with anything with a monthly fee attached.

I'm hoping that with the advent of playable vehicles in just about every FPS released nowadays that someone will get a hint and bring back the space-combat sim genre.

Not holding my breath on that one though.

As far as where to buy older games I couldn't begin to guess. Start with a search at Amazon. You can usually find new, unsold copies of older software there.

Get Freespace 2 if you can... it's totally worth whatever you have to pay for it, believe me.

Tachyon was an OK sim, a bit "eh..." but it had Bruce Campbell as the main VO actor so that kind of saved it from total blahness.

I thought the Independence War games totally sucked,.. but that just might be me. If you are really desperate you might want to give them a try for yourself.

Good luck with your quest. Let us know what you find.

A new title in the genre, which was released this month, is Starshatter, which looks great, has elements of real-time strategy games (you can command a capital ship in lieu of taking the controls of a fighter), and is very open-ended with regard to the ability to be modified (any number of Star Wars mods are being planned for the game).

If you'd like more information on this game, visit both the official site and that of its publisher, Matrix Games, which hosts the official forums for Starshatter.

I do agree that I should somehow get Freespace 2, even though since it's PXO.net doesn't work (i think, I have Freespace 1 and i tried it yesterday, couldnt connect).

I have found two places to, um, "get" it, one was a smaller file but with no cinematics and only 640x480 resolution, the other a pack of 3 ISOs, about 2.2 gigs, not very good for dial-uppers like me :D

Before anyone starts the illegal stuff accusations, there was some official anouncement or something saying something to the effect of "not being sold anymore, so you're now allowed to get a copy from a friend or something"

like we already havent. :p

The Jump to Lightspeed Expansion may be what the next X-Wing Series game should have been, we shall see, but in the meantime to RPG or monthly fees for me.

I have Starlancer, in my opinion its not very good AT ALL.

oh well...

Well, Starlancer was well, I don't know. Very cheesy in ways, with the Russians and their accents, the melodramatic story and cutscenes and that one officer chick. Yech. Plus, it was more "catch up to target , shoot target, lose target, hit target about 2 more times, then watch it zoom away".

That 3000 AD thing looks to weird, I looked it up on GameSpot and it got some horrible review, plus the "huge ship explore the galaxy sell/buy things" isnt really that appealing to me..

I'm still trying to get my X-Wing, TIE Fighter, and XvT to work properly on Win2000, trust me I've read pretty much everything Google can find.

Back onto the topic of Freespace 2 and it's blurred ideas of "can I download/burn it or not?"... I don't want to get in trouble with the forums people.. but, um, does anyone know how to use "E-Mule"? that would sort of help... hehehe...

Reading the title of this thread, the thought struck me: you know what'd be a really fun game?

Actual Space Sims.

Instead of houses, your Sims could have cabin/bunk-space aboard a starship, and get into all manner of hijinx as they go about their assigned tasks (perhaps with modifiers reflecting crew morale, discipline, and command structure. . .).

Party on the hangar deck! Woohoo!

There was a game like that. I forget what it was called, but it took place on a space station.

You designed the station, SimCity-like, and controlled the interactions between the crew and the alien species, like The Sims.

It looked kinda cool for that type of game,.. which I never got into.

If I ever come across the name of it I'll let you know.

EDIT: It is called "Space Colony." Not that old,.. might still be around. Got good reviews.

It also appears that the Sims might be doing an offical Space-Station themed game as well.

You wishes are answered.
