X-Link! (For you console people)

There is a program called X-Link that lets you connect to a LAN via the internet. It installs onto your computer and you just run it and connect to the LAN and games show up. Here is a quote from the site:

"XLink Kai is a program that you run on your PC or Macintosh that allows you to play system-link / LAN-enabled games for your XBox, GameCube and PlayStation 2.

The software is referred to as what is known as a 'tunnelling' application. There are various other single-console tunnelling applications available, but XLink remains the only one to support all 3 major consoles..."

Guess what that means for us consol players... 32 player via LAN! Official site is here: http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/

XLink Kai: Evolution VII lets you connect with other console users around the world, and play online games for free. XLink Kai: Evo VII tricks your console into thinking that the other users it is connecting to over the Internet, are actually part of a Local Area Network. This is the basis of system-link gaming, where friends would gather around in the same house and play over 2 or more consoles. With XLink Kai: Evo VII, you now have the option to test your skills out with anybody in the world. As for the technical aspects of tunnelling network packets, we won't bore you with that...

Unless i read wrong, this allows you to play with other xbox/whatever users online without having xbox live/whatever ?

Yeah I played it at my friends house on LAN (Halo) it was awsome. I cant use it because of my firewall, but I will open the ports up whenever I get a chance. But I think they got a new version that finds the right ports automatically, I dont know ill try though.

And on a side note this program is completely FREE!

Well it doesnt have the ability to cross-platform I dont think. It does support a friends list to see what game your friend is playing and on what console. Problem is there arent many people on it. Maybe if enough people can get it we can have games up with people from the forums.

but I think it's crap that I have to turn on my PC to play online. That's why I like Live because you can just relax in your couch without turning on the damn PC.

But I'll try it man, I might not afford Xbox Live so this could be a way to save money...

Let's see there's a grey long cable that is connected from the cable/dsl modem to my PC's network card (I think) so to play I just disconnect the grey cable from my PC and insert it into the Xbox instead, so that my modem and Xbox are linked? I don't have a router!

Man, there's just 80 or so people playing this, Live or XBconnect seem more apropiate

I'm afraid I don't get the point of this.

For the PS2, online play is free -- so you're not saving any money by doing it. Sure it's a discount if you're an XBOX player, but XBOX live is only $50 a year -- you're not exactly breaking the bank by subscribing.

On the technical side, online games are optimized for the internet, while LAN games are optimized for your LAN -- meaning a higher speed connection and lower latency. On a LAN, you have a much higher upload/download capability than you do over hte internet, and the developers building the LAN netcode knowing this.

Sure you'll be able to play 32 players over PS2 or XBOX by fooling your console into thinking it's on a LAN, but trust me -- it will not run well at all. The developers didn't deny you 32-player internet player out of nastiness -- they did it because they know it runs poorly.
