Nitro
Yay... Gas is up to $1.40CAN a liter here... That's $4.46US/gallon, btw. Jumped 20 cents a liter ($0.46US/gallon) in one day, and 50 cents a liter ($1.59US/gallon) over the past three weeks... The gas went up across the country, but it's even worse here... I partially suspect it's due to the 85,000 people being in town this weekend to see the Stones. I found out we're the biggest crowd they've *ever* played on a regular tour (as opposed to a festival like Live Aid), yet we're just small-time Atlantic Canada... Barely 61,000 in Moncton itself, and 117,000 in "Greater Moncton" (within 9 miles of the city limits). I'm thrilled to see the Stones, but I'm even more excited for the acts we might start getting again if the show goes well... The city is leasing the site to the promoter for $1 a day, and in exchange we get to keep all the infrastructure that gets built on the site (7 story stage excluded ). Moncton used to get big names (Black Sabbath, Metallica, Paul McCartney, KISS, Sting... Jeez, I could go all night at that) back in the 70's and 80's, and that was just in an arena that barely holds 7,000 (including standing room) for a hockey game... We hardly get any acts that aren't canadian anymore, and I'm incredibly hopefully this'll revitalize things a little bit.

Nitro
I think I can safely say that Saturday, September 3rd, 2005, was the best day of my life... I can also safely say that if you have *ever* had an interest in the Rolling Stones, run to your nearest available ticket outlet and get yourself into the venue nearest you on their Bigger Bang tour, because it's something you do *not* want to miss... Granted, with 85,000 people my experience was more that of a festival then a tour stop, but it'd still have been a hell of a show in a smaller venue. WORTH EVERY PENNY! Gold leader
As of today, in Holland you now pay about € 5.70 or a bit more than 7 USD for a gallon. And yet you guys are still complaining? I'm not really bothered by this, like most Dutch students, I don't own a car, can travel pretty much everywhere using my bike or public transport (which is free for students). Also, dutch government agreed to start transporting gas to the US to prevent major shortages...although it could still take more than a week until the fuel transports arrive. edlib
Uhhh... so, what'd I miss? I just flew in, and boy are my arms tired! Actually, they really are... I got stuck with an aisle seat in economy, and my shoulders are just too wide for something like that. I always end up forced into some contortionist nightmare pose to keep from getting slammed every time the cart goes up and down the aisle, and from taking over most of the airspace allotted to the seat next to me. Bad flight all around... It's always a bad omen when the plane is pulling away from the gate and goes completely dead. No engines, no power, no nothin'! We sat there for several minutes watching the flight attendant get an increasingly worried look on her face when the cabin power came back on, and the pilot made an announcement that the backup power system had failed, and they were trying to get it back, but several key systems had failed to come back on-line properly. The sounds of people under the plane opening hatches and throwing switches was about the only other thing you could hear as we sat there for about 15 minutes. Things like that tend to fail to instill a great deal of confidence in the craft you are sitting in. Small consolation: I learned that the in-flight seat-back entertainment system is based on Red Hat Linux. I got to see it boot up several different times during our delay (and even once more in flight... ) Lotsa turbulence too... that's always fun. Well... I can honestly say that I rode out Katrina in a trailer. Of course, it was when it made landfall the first time in Florida, about a hundred miles south of us. We were originally scheduled to be ground zero (Boynton Beach) but at the last minute it jogged pretty far south of us and only dealt us a glancing blow. We saw a little wind and a tiny bit of rain, and the power went out for less than 4 hours where we were... not even enough time for the frozen yogurt in the freezer to go soft on us. There was a pretty nasty band about 10 miles south of us, and another about the same distance north of us, but we seemed to be in a pocket of calm. The thunderstorms that happen on a daily basis around there are generally worse than what we saw from this storm. We were supposedly in a mandatory evacuation zone... but the zone started only one street north of us and went south. Beyond that, it was voluntary. We were packed up and ready to go, but nobody else in the trailer park was making any motions towards leaving, and nobody came around to make sure we got out,.. so we decided to hang out. Probably a good thing too... accidents all over the roads all around us, and the situation was actually worse in the areas the wanted us to evacuate to. I'm beat... I have come to the conclusion that I really despise travelling,.. at least in commercial airlines. It really saps a lot out of you,.. mentally, if not physically. I'll write a bit more tomorrow when I've recovered a bit.
Nute Gunray
As of today, in Holland you now pay about € 5.70 or a bit more than 7 USD for a gallon. And yet you guys are still complaining? Yes, because of this We do have a pretty damn big country to move stuff around in. And all the mass transit in the universe can't get food to the store from the railhead. Incidentally, gas would have to be $7 a gallon before it would be cost effective for me to take the bus everywhere instead of driving. Although I do walk most places right now. Nitro
This was taken during either the first or second act, before the site *really* filled up, but I was pretty much where that big red dot is for most of the day... All in all, one hell of an amazing show... I went up front during the Tragically Hip's set to watch Gord Downie be, well, Gord Downie, but for the most part I hung back behind the pit, 'cause I didn't want mom to feel too abandoned... She'd *really* wanted to go, but didn't have anyone to go with, so I let her tag along with me and my friends, but it was stuff likt that that made this show so undescribable... The bands were great, the crowd as a whole was great (no crowd-caused injuries, and the only real incident was about 100 people storming one of the beer gardens, and even then it wasn't a big deal), but the most amazing thing to see was so many people of all different ages rocking out together. My most memorable non-band-related moment was this typical blue-collar office monkey in his late-40's/early-50's, that was crowdsufing while the Tragically Hip were on... Golf shirt, khakis, and a look on his face that said, "THIS IS THE COOLEST THING *EVER*!!!" I don't know who he was, but I wish I had a picture, and I wanna shake his hand, because he was the embodiment of the show. And the most important part: THE STONES STILL HAVE IT!!! I used to make fun of 'em for not retiring, but now I know why they haven't... They still put on an *AMAZING* live show. It takes skill to keep 85,000 people's attention riveted to you, but they still did it... Simply undescribable. Finally, my long-time friend came up from Frederiction with his girlfriend and her roommate Ashley... Ash's an amazing girl, and to make a long story short, I'm no longer single, and hope that doesn't change 'cause I don't think I'll ever have another shot at a more impressive first date then a Rolling Stones concert. edlib
edlib wants a Telecaster like that one. Played a lot of guitar whist down there,.. of course. You can't be around my dad, who is one of the best jazz guitarists his generation ever produced, without jamming most of the time. Problem is: with a 40-year generation gap between us, we know very few songs in common. I know a tiny handful of "Standard" tunes, but that's about it. He knows almost zero rock songs. As long as I have a lead sheet, I can hack my way through almost jazz standard, but that's a far cry from 'owning' the tune like my dad does, simply because I've never heard most of these songs before. So we end up playing the blues a lot... usually in a key I'm not super comfortable in, usually something with a whole buncha flats. He does have some sweet guitars, though. We did most of our playing on a pair of reproductions of the acoustic Selmer guitars that Django Reinhardt used. They sounded and played awesome... especially considering they were made in China. I might just have to see about getting me one of those. And he gave me a lot to think about towards guitar playing. This was the first time I was around him when I could truly understand everything he was doing on the guitar, and see how I might be able to use it in my own playing. I must be advancing... in the past I could gather some of what he did, but mostly I was lost and overwhelmed by the flurry of notes and advanced chord patterns he was throwing out. This time I got it. That made me feel good. Now I just have to commit a couple of dozen standards to memory before the next time I go down there. Nute Gunray
I decided, because I have nothing to do, to point out where I was when that picture I'm in was taken. There's a tiny reddish dot on the right side of the field that's flashing. That's me. I was surrounded by 99,234 of my closest friends. That seat cost me $22. If I was on the opposite side of the field, it would have been well over $750.
