Obi Hilt Render and Some Questions?

Hello again,

First here's a hilt model I just finished:

obirender0im.jpg

First thing is that this model is around 2200 polys. Thats as much as I could get the poly count down with a lot of face deleting and wielding.

So my first question is, would a poly count this high in a hilt model effect some one's frame rate with a lower end PC?

My PC is a beast so, I don't see any frame rate loss with models upward of 2000 polys.

Was just wondering is anyone would know anything about this.

Thanks again!

First off, sweet saber! Beautiful workmanship

As far as frame rate, I too have a beast system(s) so I've yet to encounter problems with high poly models. I would think if it were just the one, there wouldn't be much affect...however, when combined in-game with another or multiple high end models..then some struggling may occur.

Try spawning your saber 6 times and dual wield your 3 person party and see if any system lag starts up. It's about the only way I can think of to truly test performance issues.

The model looks great though, so I hope there are no problems, or at least decent workarounds :)

WOW i Love it!!!! how did you take that screenshot??? i cant figure how to take one like that... .. my kun double blade was a little over 1000 polys and ive tested it with 2 NPCs at once and i dont have a beast and no p[robs... but since the testing i made the saber limited to just the PC... so if you encounter problems you should be able to just add a user limitation

Hi!,

First, yeah I'd did test a couple of my double-sabers( the Double Vader being my favorite hehe) which is about 2300 polys. The problem is (well its not a problem for me lol) my system specs go:

AMD 3200

ASUS mobo

Geforce 6800gt

3 gigz of PC3200

100 gig SATA HD

So I don't see any loss in frames:) But I'm not sure about some one with lets say a 1ghz proc w/ a geforce 4?

Wish I could test it. I just don't want to go through the trouble of making higher poly models and have people's systems slow down cause of it:(

I think I'll just go ahead with it though. I'll just throw in a disclaimer or something lol!

And as for how I did the render of the OBI.

Well if your using gMax, I'm not sure if that program does rendering or not? I use 3ds Max 6 & 7 and Maya 6. If your using 3ds Max, I first modeled the hilt, created materials like chrome and billet using raytrace, stole some textures from Jedi Academy and Bump mapped them (didnt turn out so great), and as for the saber glow effect thats kinda tricky. Glow is a Video Post effect in max.

Well thanks again for the replys guys! Be well!

P.S. LOL! I just noticed your in Knoxville ChainZ! I live in Lafayette,TN !
