Astrotoy7
heh..... astro is the KING of this type of stuff the ultimate proggie for this is tmpgEnc ("The MPEG Encoder") Converts nearly everything into mpeg or avi.. with a nifty plugin, you can even convert QT to mpeg, which I do often when converting the ep3 cads/clips etc into dvd format to play it on my TV its is fairly easy to use, and has a 'wizard' for beginners Linky : http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html the *ULTIMATE* source for this type of info, with guides etc is http://www.videohelp.com mtfbwya
El Sitherino
I use virtualdub and Virtualdub mod. The choice for professional encoders like myself. Allows for the best compression abilities without subtracting quality.

Used it for a while, now it sits along side my copy of JA and Galactic Battlegrounds in the "crap that I will never use again" I dare not imagine what 'professional' encoding you do sithy, but in my spare time I had a "hobby business' which involved DVD transfer of analogue material mainly I got wedding and birthdays etc but for very minimal effort on my part i get $80+ per hour material encoded... since being involved in this huge project for work, I havent been doing that as much, but I can tell you the functionality within TmpgEnc was excellent for fine tuning bitrates to optimise the transfer of grainy VHS... *collects royalties from TmpgEnc* mtfbwya
