scout_zero
I realized that the Star Wars storyline is almost exactly alike with Ancient Rome. In Star Wars, the story begins with a Republic, just like Rome. The Senate grows powerless in the hands of Palpatine, just like Ceasar in Rome. Palpatine creates the Empire, just like Ceasar creating the Roman Empire. Palpatine is murdered by one of his subjects, Darth Vader, just like Brutus murdering Ceasar in Rome. Lynk Former
Star Wars is based heavily on past history and myths and related material. All the kinds of things that people can relate to and understand.

Within halls of power there is always corruption and intrigue.... similar things are recorded to have occurred in ancient egypt and even before then in Assyria mtfbwya
Kurgan
Doesn't Jedi mean "period drama"? So it's really a modern term, about something old (a show on TV about the samurai for example). Star Wars is a jumble of myths, serial and pulp stories that Lucas threw together and gave his own spin. It's fun.
Ranre
Yeah, he was trying to combined modern likings, with past myths. And on top of all he put it in a galaxy much more advanced then our own. So I guess Lucas was the poin-dexter

You mean the old stories that Lucas used as inspiration for Star Wars? Certainly. Because the "original books" (starting with "Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker" ghost written with Alan Dean Foster back in 1976 had lightsabers all right. The early scripts for Star Wars had them as well, but they weren't a specialized Jedi/Sith weapon, rather they were standard equipment for soldiers, including Stormtroopers. The early lightsabers in those stories (or "Light sabres") were pretty much the same as we see them now in the movies, although they talk about the energy blade being a "pearlescent white" and speak of "jewelled hilts." However there are hints of "laser sword" like weapons in Sci Fi before SW, but they are few and far between. However the ever popular "flaming sword" from fantasy and other magic blades are a perfect precursor. Yes, of all his popular contributions to Sci Fi, the Lightsaber is probably chief among them.
