Seriously Prime. That sounds ridiculous.. The S019 are elite officers, theyre trained to be calm and rational in executing their orders. 8 body shots including 4 head shots for a man that was *on the ground* is simply excessive...

It should be pointed out that the officers WERE following procedure when they emptied 8 shots into him once they had knocked him to the ground. UK (and US) and a number of other police services have been working for a while now with anti-terro experts and police forces that regularly deal with terrorists (such as israel) to come up with a set of guidelines for dealing with suspected suicide bombers.

Most Al Quaida bombs are triggered by a hand-held trigger with a wire that goes up the sleeve to that backpack bomb.

This means the police can't take any chances with one bullet, or simply trying to restrain someone, or stun guns, or shooting to wound; as it would be very easy for the target to trigger the bomb in a second.

UK police chiefs have said that policy will continue.

That said, it seems like the officers on the ground should have had better intelligence, should have identified themselves better (if it is true that they didn't) and really should have cut him off before he got as far as the train.

He was a student who's visa had expired but had stayed on working as an electrician to pay for his father's medical bills in brasil. This might have been part of why he ran, but i don't know if anyone will ever be sure exactly what happened.

Its one of those horrible situations where its no-win really. All the security experts seem to agree it was the correct response, but that isn't any comfort if you happen to be one of the people shot for no reason.

[edit] Just saw this on the bbc web site

A man arrested in Birmingham by anti-terror police could be one of the suspects in the failed 21 July attacks on London, security sources say.

The man was held after being shot with a Taser stun gun. The BBC has learnt he was wearing a rucksack at the time.

I was unaware that it was at point blank range...

It appears that what information various areas of the world receive can be a bit different.

And Sithy, apparently there was some stungunning today in London...

Based on the front pages of uk newspapers todays it seems like asylum seekers are going to be in for a rough ride again over then next few months. Turns out all of them were granted asylum, or kids of families that were granted asylum.

Considering the UK press is happy to blame asylum seekers for most things anyway, they are probably loving this...

Right and if they use a stun gun that works properly, there would be no way he could even move to hit the trigger.
