A question about GIMP

I was just wondering if it is as good as everyone says it is. Does anyone have some experience with it? I'm taking a class on Frontpage (yes, yes I know.) and I need something that I can edit backgrounds and such. I'm used to Photoshop and have a descent working knowledge of it (but can't use as it is a copy of my friends and not exactly mine, therefore cannot use it for commercial use). Are the two programs comparable or is there something else that a college student can get for free or relatively low price? Thanks

Based on the look, Paint.net is laid out similar to Photoshop so you might have an easier time transitioning to it. The GIMP is also a very good product, despite the fact that it's free, which isn't a real measure of quality anyways. I use it extensively for video game textures and personal projects and it's definitely worth downloading as an alternative to the overly expensive PS.

Hey, I wasn't saying GIMP wasn't a good software, but he asked if it was comparable to Photoshop, which is far superior. I was only pointing the obvious though, a free program can hardly do the same job (or as well) a $600 one would do. You should definately download it and give it a try IMO.

I tried it (as i'm always happy to support Open Source software) but I have to say I couldn't get the hang of it at all.

If you are using linux its probably excellent, but the whole multiple-windows thing just doesn't work on windows. I tried a few of the windows-fix and look-like-photoshop patches but they all caused as many problems as they fixed.

Its pretty impressive for the amount of stuff it can do, but the user interface makes the highly complex photoshop one look like childs play.

If you are on linux, or aren't used to photoshop then it might be worth taking the time to learn... if (like me) you use Photoshop at work and want an equivilant for home then its just too awkward imho.

I haven't tried Paint.NET so i can't comment on that.

I haven't used paint shop pro in years, but i hear that the new versions of that manage to do almost all the basics of photoshop pretty well. And its a fraction of the price. For doing frontpage backgrounds you really don't need the complexity of photoshop or The GIMP.

This is probably why it locks up on me every so often. The windows are bit

obstructive, but I found I could adjust. To each his own.

No problem. Photoshop is superior, but I don't have $600. :(

We managed to find an adobe creative suite on offer with photoshop, illustrator, indesign, golive and acrobat professional all for £179. But that was a while back and i doubt its still available. Anyway, thats still a lot of money.

Photoshop elements isn't much use imho.
