George Lucas & Shakespeare

Recommended Posts

I believe that George Lucas took some ideas from Shakespeare's Othello, we saw in the movie that Pademe was the main reason why Anakin turned to the dark side and in Othello, he got mad because of his beloved one Desdemona.

Palpatine in SW manipulate Anakin and make him think that Pademe and Obi-wan are having an affair; Anakin said to pademe in the movie "I don’t wanna hear more about Obi-wan", the same in Shakespeare's tale, Lago manipulate Othello to make him think that his beloved one Desdemona and his friend Cassio are having an affair, and the result is one; Anakin killed Pademe and Othello Killed Desdemona….so they are similar, aren’t they? Let me hear your thoughts.

Every story that could have been written, has already been written. Every "new" story be it in books, plays or movies is a rehash of something old. You can't write something down without it bearing a resemblance to something else.

- postmodernism 101

This is how I see it:

Anakin's story bears similarities to: Romulus and Remus, Romeo and Juliet, Ran, The Illiad, Arabian Nights, Jesus Christ, The Matrix, Oidipus, Scarface, The Fifth Element and a million other stories, whether it was intentional or not is for Lucas to know and us to speculate.

The Fifth Element?

You forgot Oedipus, Star Trek, Lost, and Jeopardy.

Also Anakin went to the Darkside cause he was greedy. What movie was all about greed? Wallstreet.

He also was an idiot. What movie is about an idiot? Field of Dreams.

Padme was hot. What movie is about a hot woman? Driving Miss Daisy.

It goes on and on and on.

In a way he did kill his father when he killed the Emperor. The father of his darkness. ;)

We had a similar discussion about this in another thread when someone else mentioned that The Matrix stole from the Bible. Point is you cant read influential works such as the Bible or Shakespeare and not be influenced by them. Even if you haven't read them humans have been righting for so long that it's hard to create anything new.
