Modding?

Are you asking for the definition of a 'mod?' If you are, a mod is short for modification. It is when some people modify a game to include new units, new sides, new weapons, etc. Any game (on the PC anyway) can be modded. And don't feel alone on not knowing what one is; I never knew what a mod was until about two years ago. :)

Like many have said already, a Mod is a modification (hence the shorted word Mod). What it does is, people who have the knowledge (I'm not one of them :) ) - usually not developers themselfs - modify games to either include more units, new features, or completly change the game using the games engine.

Example of using a games engine and create a whole new game so to speak (a mod), is Day of Defeat for Half-Life. Another is Counter Strike also built on the Half-Life engine.

Warlords is a mod for HomeWorld 2. It replaces all the ships in the game and adds in Star Destroyers, corellian cruisers, corvettes, frigates, aswell as changing sounds and adding propper laser bolts, making it look and feel like you're playing a Star Wars game.

I have no propper examples for mods that only adds new features and/or units (none that come to mind :) ), but Total Annihilation has some atleast.

As with all mods (as far as I know) it requires the original game it was built on installed on your computer in order to play them (or even to install them for that matter :p ).
