Serenity / Firefly

Anyone here planning on seeing Serenity when it comes out in a couple weeks? For that matter, is anyone here a Firefly fan? If you've not seen Firefly then you might want to check it out (especially if you plan on seeing Serenity). They've been showing it on Sci-Fi on Fridays, but only about half the series will be shown there before the movie is released...

Having seen Serenity back in May at one of the sneak previews, I'd say you can definitely watch the movie without seeing the show and be able to follow along just fine. However, it does help to see the series first since character development was a big part of the show. There are a few parts, lines, etc which stand out if you're familiar with the series, but work well enough by themselves. That being said, I'd highly recommend seeing the series first if you can, as you've a lot more time to get used to the characters and their relationships with one another.

If you're interested in seeing the series first, Sci-Fi is supposed to be presenting a marathon of it tomorrow (Tuesday). I'm not sure what time it starts, but if the Sci-Fi channel you might want to check it out (especially if you've a Tivo or something which you can record it on and watch at your leisure).

Generalization commence!

Okay, so our main character we're introduced to is taking part in a war of independence, and he ends up on the losing side. Instead of integrating into this universe, he picks up a ship, gets himself a crew, and works out on the fringes of the systems, taking jobs where he can, legal or illegal. In the first episode we're introduced to our cast, and they pick up some passenegers, all with their own stories which we explore through several episodes.

You REALLY connect to characters in this show, and there is some great suspense and action sequences throughout. Best. Show. Ever.

I skimmed my cable guide, and while there is a marathon on Tuesday, it won't be playing all the episodes, unfortunately. Guess Sci-Fi won't have a chance to show the last 6 episodes before the release of Serenity, if they're going to show them at all. :( On the flipside, they're having a sneak preview here tomorrow night, so I should have a chance to see it a 2nd time before it's officially released in theatres.

BTW, if you want to know more about the show, check out the wikipedia entry on it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firefly_(television_series). The site gives good info on the setting, the characters, and more, including a full run-down on what happens in every episode. If you want to catch up on the story so far, it's a good read. Of course, if you'd rather have a chance to experience them unspoiled then you might not want to check out the episode links.

wow this movie is really good. surpassed what i expected. like ET Warrior said u really connect with the characters. having seen the show so long ago the movie did a good job of reminding me of important stuff, but you don't need to know anything to enjoy the movie you just get a better understanding if you've watched the show. man seeing the movie makes me sadder that the show got cancelled. also for the fans of the show, this movie closes the book on what's up with River GREAT. also it gives the fan some nice closure on a couple sub plots from the series. man this is a great sci fi movie, screw that great movie.

Now I just need to get more people to see it. I figure if Revenge of the Sith can make like 83 million in 3 days, then Serenity could do quite well if more Star Wars fans would take a look at it. There's definitely enjoyable common ground there (pretty much everyone I know who's a Firefly/Serenity fan is always a diehard Star Wars fan). Please spread the word if you enjoyed the film (if you haven't already), and if you've not seen it then stop reading this and go see it! :D

Laugh, actually, amazingly enough, that's a potential yes. The reason I say that is apparently Bruce Campbell was in a sci-fi/western television show called "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr." I've never seen the show, but some of my friends who are Firefly fans tells me it's sort of similar. As for Mal specifically reminding me of Ash, I don't really see it. I might see a bit of Ash in Jayne from time to time though.

This was released from whedonesque a little while ago as an additional teaser. It's the first 9 minute of Serenity, which serves to establish the introductory plot, introduce two protagonists and the primary antagonist, and give a little background on the Firefly setting. None of it takes place aboard the Firefly ship (Serenity); however, so you'll need to see the rest of the film to meet the bulk of the crew. Enjoy!
