The Seeker
Anybody know of a good program for scanning a hard disk for errors. My onboard one with WinXP just isn't working right, and I am getting one Blue Screen of Death after another along with a bunch of wierd happenings. (Mouse pointer dissappearing five minute bootups, and such) I have run the most current versions of spybot, Ad-Aware, ewido, and AVG anti virus. I have run system restores, and downloaded all updates to get my system running again, but nothing. So, last step before Reinstalling my OS is to see if there are any physical errors on my HD, But Windows XP just doesn't seem to want to help me. Any ideas? Samuel Dravis
Try using chkdsk, if that wasn't the one you were talking about. Use "chkdsk.exe /f /r" in the Run box and tell it to start on the next reboot. Also, defragging might be useful if you haven't done that already. I'm offended. Of course we've done chkdsk. And we defragged the day before it screwed up, so I think that some files were put in the wrong place, and that's mucking everything up. Plus during most scans, it's crashing right in the middle of it. Stupid Windows. Anyone else have a suggestion? Manoman, SWPhreak, ZeroX2? Anyone? MTV2
use the diagnostic tool that came with you HD.if your HD does not come with any diagnostic, you can download it from the HD manufacture's website.
The Seeker
Update: Reinstalled windows, everything running perfect. Guess backing up and reloading all my files was a small price to pay to end my frustration. Like LJ said, I think that the defrag rearranged some files into the wrong places. Since the reinstall, there have been no problems.
manoman81
Sorry ladyjedi, I just now read the thread. I never heard of defrag doing that to a system... Odd.

Odd.It might corrupt things in a bad way if it was interrupted (crash, power outage or something) while moving system files...
manoman81
Well, I just talked to my boss and I think it might be a good idea to save up for a new hard drive. Just in case.
Lady Jedi
You guys have a lot of computer problems. Oh, shush. Perhaps we just overuse our systems. It might corrupt things in a bad way if it was interrupted (crash, power outage or something) while moving system files... Considering we were out of town state while it was running, there's no telling what happened in the interim.... Manoman: It's no problem. JK_114 is planning on getting an extra hard drive for it just in case.
