Alpha channels on GIMP

Hi, errr... My license on my try-out photoshop version expired a few days ago :(, so I opted for GIMP, since photoshop prices are just so high... I don't miss any features from photoshop that aren't on GIMP, but one thing that's been driving me mad is how to edit alpha channels.

I do the same thing I would've done on Photoshop: I right-clivk on a selection, click on "save to channel" (by the way, I dosen't ask me anything before saving the selection, so I just assume it created an alpha channel), so I go to my channels pallet and select my new channel, click on a brush, but no matter what I do, the program wont let me edit it, so I just get a completely white alpha channel, which isn't gonna do me much good. So if any GIMP users out there know how to make alpha channels... help would be apreciated.

I really hate bumping this up, but are there really no GIMP users in the crowd? I mean, the only moding I know is modeling and texturing, so in my current state, I can't mod at all...

Sorry dede_frost, but the Forum Rules clearly state no "bumping" of threads. No more ok? Perhaps a Google or other such search for GIMP Tutorials would be in order. I use PS7 so I can't help with GIMP. :( -RH

I don't know anything about the official terminology, but whenever I want transparency in an image I just select a very small portion and the go to "filters > colors > color to alpha" and do it. I'm not sure if that's what you're after or not.

Thanks, but thats not what I'm looking for... I now know I was making the alpha channel the wrong way, I actually have to click the background layer and make an alpha channel from there. My problem now is that I want to change that channel, your method allows me to simply erase parts of it, but this isn't gonna do me much good, since I want to manipulate the channel using shade of grey (GIMP dosen't let me colour the alpha channel, I can only make it black, and that looks terrible.)

I hope you understood my problem now... and hope some one can help me...

The only thing I've been able to do is set the opacity of the eraser, as long as you have a transparent background you should be able to produce the same effects (it'll just take you longer), the problem is that it erases everything instead of hiding it, and I can't figure out how to base alpha channel modifications on the variable colors of patterns.

So the only suggestion I have is to select the area you want transparent and then erase it.

If you figure out more let me know;)
