Quick guidelines for parrying and blocking saber slashes.

Recommended Posts

Today I was fighting some bots over at the code server, great fun.

But I noticed that the uppercut slashes - the ones you do by pressing backwards and left or right) are unparryable for me :/ Or maybe I just dont know how to parry them, I think it was either Ace or Jon that once told me to walk into the same direction as the slash is going.

Example:

someone slashes Left+Back, I move left+back.

Maybe its the pings (mine is double the bots') but I just cant seem to parry those slashes, any help?

Just tried it in a solo game, it seems that I am doing the correct move, since the bots are getting parried. Only difference in factors is that I have a 0 ping in a solo game and a 200+ one when I play online, I think I'll blame ping from now on :p

Hello! I think you should move to the opposite direction as the slash is coming concerning to the Back/Forward axis...

Example:

Someone slashes "uppercut" left-back, you move left-forward to parry it.

The 0.09 release comes with a guiding manual made by Hockney explaining how that stuff works :)

OK i can't speak much for OJP and even though it's somethign very much talked about in these forums I'm still somewhat lost as to what it is. (cuz i never took the time to find out lol) Anyway I can speak for JA+ servers. Servers so far have autoblock or they don't. You can test this by facing a friend in red (strong) stance and doing a simple overhead in red stance. If your saber bounces back off of his then the server has autoblock and you can parry.

To begin you must learn the blocking rules. Blue blocks blue, yellow blocks blue & yellow and red blocks all. To block and later parry, you must be in a stance equal to or higher than your opponent. To block you simply need to keep facing your enemy, keep him at a distance and just aim where he attacks. I fhe tries a swipe at your feet just look down. To parry all you have to do is watch for the sparks. On a server where sparks are turned off just wat until his/her blade hits yours then tap attack.

drtiniman, thanks for the help, but JA+ saber blocking tips definitely don't work with OJP completely different saber system.

So I think gregory William was correct eh? Or was I? I still dont know. In solo games an uppercut gets randomly blocked by either my way or greg's, in online games my parrying skills arent exactly top notch ( I BLAME PING! :p)so I really couldnt tell either. Help?

Ping makes it hard, because:

1) the delay from when the enemy starts swinging to when you see it

2) the delay from when you hit the buttons to move into parry to when the server knows you have done this.

So don't feel bad. :) I've also had trouble parrying attacks from below at times, but keep in mind, the parry direction isn't determined by what kind of attack is being used: only by where it hits you (or would if you didn't block). So, if someone swings from below and the saber gets all the way up to your face before the server decides it makes "contact" it will count as a hit from above that would need to be parried by moving backwards (and into the saber).

I always wondered how that blocking system works. Thanks, but yeah, this OJP Enhanced is a very very different sabersystem from base or JA+.

You really should give OJP Enhanced a try, though the learning curve is steep especially if your use to JA+. If you want to at least see what its all about, go here http://ojp.jediknight.net/ , download Enhanced 0.0.9 and its patch, then look at the saber manual me and razor created in the enhanced folder. That should give you a basic idea about what the combat is like, but there have been changes made to the combat when you play on the code server (which you can read about in the "Changes made to the code server sticky thread).

I was just fighting Rosh Penin in a solo game because I felt bad about losing to some bots on the code server :p I must say, after a few fights it becomes fairly easy to kill a bot with the same ping as you. So, to make my duels more interesting I started doing random finishing moves, kicking, backwhacking, multi-real fake slashes, whatever. Funny thing is, 9 out of 10 times you can kill your opponent by parrying him, kicking him over and lunging him. I think it even ignores how much DP you have. ( not certain of that since I tend to do a lot of parrying to train my defensive skills) Im still having trouble defending against uppercut slashes, if I succeed in parrying it seems to very random, could you look into that Ace?

If lunge has properties like that than I suggest giving all DFA's similar ones, I dont think an arial stab would be very easy to parry if you get what I mean.

There's always the "unlagging" prediction techniques, but I'm not sure how much they'd help in close combat situations.

Me and Hocky went over the blocking system in detail several months ago. We're pretty sure it's working correctly.
