State of the Community

Our community has forever been involved with squabbling among ourselves, dissent, and more recently, pointless religious debates. I admit that I have participated in many of these things. I think we all have been guilty of something that did not benefit this community.

What community hasn't had these things happen to it? But we can do better than this. This is my attempt to forge a closer bond between each other. I'm calling upon all of us to make our community stronger than it already is.

A bond between us already exists, and it is slowly growing stronger. I see lots of us working to help each other out. We have learned to deal with newbies effectively, I believe, to get them started down the right path. Several projects exist where teamwork is essential and, for the most part, is running smoothly. The XWAUP is one such project. They have survived through things from shortages of volunteers to the death of Wedge, a close friend and compatriot of many of the team members. Still, they have perservered through teamwork and through effective leadership. Congratulations to all of you for being so successful.

The State of the Community still needs work though. There is no doubt about it. Many of us cannot seem to learn to live with the many differences that separate us from everyone else. These differences are emotional, physical, and ideological in nature. Again, I admit that I am guilty of some of these failings. I do not claim to be above anyone by coming here and saying this, only that I see that the bond between all of us, the Community, needs work, and that a call to action must be made.

We must work together to make this bond between us stronger. If we are to truly come together and become one Community, each of us must learn to agree to disagree, to put away our pride when it matters, and to learn to forgive each other. Forgiveness does not mean however that those who committed acts against us are to go unpunished. And pride is what keeps most of us fighting even when the point of the arguement is long lost. Agreeing to disagree will stop any more bad blood between us, the Community, before it has been spilt. We must learn how to do these. If we do not, more and more talented people in our community will end up going the way of Draegos, producer of The Path Not Taken Shipset for XvT.

To those who would say otherwise, you are hurting the Community. We must work together and put aside our personal differences. It is not about us, as individuals. It is about each other. It took me some time to see that, but now I do, and that's all that matters.

In an effort to do just this, I'm going to borrow from a part of government that exists in several countries. In the USA, we call it the State of the Union Address. I propose that every six months a community member gives a dissertation, similar to this one, on the state of our community.

This speech should put the community's successes and failings into perspective for all of us, so we have something to work towards for the next six months. Each time the address is given, it should be given by a different member from the community so each time we will have a brand new perspective on how things are progressing.

Let me know if you think this is a good idea. Only together can we reach the level of unity once felt during the days of the OPT Project. Only together can we succeed.

Respectfully submitted,

I already have enough dissertations to do in my philosophy class... I would do anything not to have any.

Someone from XWlegacy.net. Guess you don't visit there that often. Well don't. I can tell already that the speech didn't work when I posted it over there and at XWAupgrade.com.

(Now in about 5 minutes, if everything is on schedule, Nob will come along and chew me out for saying that. If he does that, then he monitors everything XWA related. biggrin.gif)

Well at least I tried to salvage the situation... cya somewhere else, perhaps in the JK2 editing community. *sigh*

In my opinion, we're not even part of the XWA community anymore. At least not the people who post on this part of the board. I bet most of us haven't played xwa for several months, at least. We have actually nothing to do with the rest of the "xwa community"...

Hmmm....for a guy with a whole 21 posts, this guy Chris sure has a lot to say about our community. He says he made the same speech at two other sites and they didn't listen to him there either. Maybe he should take notes.
