be that as it may :) reworking even that particular dialog would constitute some fairly extensive editing of the rest of the story due to some concepts that I'd already established in my brain. However, I think I've already figured out a way to fix the discrepancy and still keep the story flowing the way I want it to. I have to brainstorm a bit...but we'll see what happens.

Update: I haven't added a new chapter, but I have edited chapters 10, 13, and 14. In summary I've introduced a new character to accompany Dustil to Corellia and changed Vima Sunrider's role in the story to a point where she really hasn't done anything yet. The new character is a Twilek Jedi that I was planning on introducing in a pre-Mandalorian War fic that is in progress. She has kept most of Vima's original lines, but I'd still like to hear feedback on what I've done.

reports of the demise of this fic have been greatly exaggerated :)

Chapter 16

Aeris was beginning to notice that the explosions in the palace we’re getting closer to the throne room. She also noticed that the dark side presence she had felt at the beginning of the battle was getting closer also, and she made a decision.

“I am going to help the defenders,” she told Dustil “I want you to stay here with the captain and guard the king.”

“But-“Dustil started to argue but Aeris cut him off

“Do not argue with me, I have seen battle, and can handle myself. Captain, have your men lower the force field outside.”

The captain nodded and extracted a comm. link from his belt.

“Captain Rees to Sergeant Halla.”

“Yes Sir?”

“Lower the field, one of the Jedi is coming out.”

“Yes Sir, Halla out.”

Aeris jogged to the throne room door and the force field dropped as the door opened in front of her. She acknowledged the guards as she passed and then she began to focus on the dark side presence in the castle. She was certain that if she found whatever it was she would find the battle. It didn’t take long for Aeris to do just that. She rounded a corner and could hear blaster fire, and grenade explosions.

Aeris began running in the direction of the battle sounds, and when she came upon the scene it was not pretty. Blaster bolts flew through the space between Colonel Tigh’s Royal Guard and the unknown attackers. Carbon scoring and grenade blast marks marked the once pristine palace walls and floors. Aeris scanned the Royal Guard ranks and picked out Colonel Tigh among her men. She kept her head down and sprinted over to the colonel ducking down beside her. Tigh looked up at Aeris with a surprised look on her face.

“What are you doing here?” she asked over the sounds of battle.

“I’m here to help!”

“We’re outnumbered, and they seem to be well coordinated. Not something I would expect from a group of rebels. They’re pushing us toward the throne room, it’s clear they want the king.”

“Let me see if I can even the odds, have your men cover me.”

Aeris lit her lightsaber and emerged from the covered position. Immediately the blaster fire began to fly her way and she charged forward at the enemy line deflecting shots back toward her attackers. She waded into the line and let her lightsaber speak for her. Cries of “Jedi!” began to rise up from them, and it spurred her on.

Colonel Tigh watched Aeris and yelled to her men

“Rally behind the Jedi!”

Aeris cut down another attacker and thought perhaps they would turn this battle in their favor after all.

Atris paused outside the door that led to the Jedi Archives. She had tried to sleep and found that she could not. The Archive had been her home for so many years and so now she returned to it thinking perhaps it would give her some solace now. Despite that she almost felt as if she didn’t belong, but she hoped to see if Revan or perhaps Gaven left any clues that Bastila and her friends may have missed. If anyone would be able to find them it would be her as her knowledge of the archives exceeded anyone else’s at the temple. As the door opened and Atris entered she saw that someone else was already there, Jolee Bindo.

“I thought you were going to sleep,” Atris said

He looked up from his console

“Did I say that?”

“Yes you did,” Atris replied with a smirk as she approached him.

“Maybe I wanted to do some light reading to help me sleep.”

“You could have done that from a data pad and I would hardly call…” she glanced down at the terminal “the history of Korriban light reading.”

“So I changed my mind, I’m old, I can do that now,” Jolee replied

“You are looking for clues to Revan’s location.”

“And you’re here to what? Clean the floors?”

Atris couldn’t help but laugh softly at his humor “No, I am here for the same reason you are. My experience with the archives might give me better insight than others.”

“Well…what are you waiting for? Pull up a terminal, plenty of room.”

Atris sat down at a terminal behind a Jolee and considered where she should start. Perhaps there was some clue in Revan’s actions before her fall to the dark side. She had been through this material before when the Council was trying to find a reason for Revan’s turn, but perhaps there was something they had overlooked. Atris called up the appropriate files and began to read.

Carth and Bastila had donned fresh clothes before using Carth’s speeder to travel to the Presidential Palace. Carth had pulled on a fresh, pressed Republic uniform while Bastila had opted for the same non traditional Jedi robe she had worn throughout their search for the Star Forge. Seeing it brought back many memories for Carth, mostly of Revan and he was reminded of the sting of her absence. The two friends exited the speeder and Bastila turned to Carth.

“Shall we ‘face the music’ as Atton put it?”

Carth smiled “I guess we don’t have a choice.”

“Indeed.”

The pair received some looks and raised eyebrows as they made their way toward the chancellor’s office. When they arrived two armed Republic guards stopped them. Both men saluted Carth, who returned the gesture, before one of the men addressed the pair.

“Sorry Sir, the chancellor is in an emergency meeting and left orders not to be disturbed.”

“I think she’ll make an exception soldier. Step inside and tell her Admiral Carth Onasi is here.”

“Can’t do it Admiral,” the guard replied stone-faced “She was very specific Sir.”

“Alright, step aside soldier, I promise you won’t be disciplined.”

“Sir I really can’t”

Carth knew the guard was just doing as he’d been told, but Carth was beginning to get irritated.

“Step aside Soldier,” Carth said emphatically “that is an order.”

The guard looked at Carth, and then at his companion who shrugged and they stepped away from the door.

Carth entered his access code and the door opened. They walked through the outer office past the chancellor’s assistant’s desk and the inner office door parted in front of them. Seated inside Chancellor Organa’s office were Admiral Dodonna, Senator Solo, and the chancellor herself. All three looked toward the door at the newcomers and Carth could read both surprise and anger on the chancellor’s face though he wasn’t sure if the anger was directed at him or the fact that she’d been interrupted.

“I could have sworn I left orders not to be disturbed.” Organa commented

“I pulled rank on your guards Madam Chancellor,” Carth responded “they obeyed a direct order to let me in.”

“Hmmm, last time I checked a chancellor trumps an admiral, but I am glad that you’re here Carth and I see you’ve even brought the disappearing Jedi with you. Sit down both of you; we’ll deal with where you’ve been later.”

Carth glanced at Bastila and they both pulled up chairs that had been pushed against the wall. The chancellor reseated herself behind her desk and leveled her gaze at Senator Solo.

“Now, as I was asking before I was interrupted, what was the last you heard from Corellia Senator?”

“I’ve already told you, I haven’t had any contact since I informed the palace that the Jedi would be arriving. I know as much as you do!”

Organa sighed, clearly irritated “You’re dismissed Senator, but don’t even think of leaving the planet.”

“As if I have anywhere to go,” he replied before rising and stalking out of the office.

The door closed and Organa shifted gears turning to Carth.

“Now then, Admiral, would you care to explain where you’ve been?”

“I’m sorry Madam Chancellor, but I was on a personal trip. I had no idea there was any need for my presence here.”

“And you chose not to inform Admiral Dodonna of your whereabouts?”

“Yes Ma’am, Admiral Dodonna had no knowledge of where I was.”

Organa’s eyes narrowed “This wouldn’t have anything to do with Revan would it?” she asked

“Ma’am if that were the case I’d be disobeying a direct order from you.”

“Yes you would so I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and believe that one of my top admirals wouldn’t directly disobey me. Besides, we have bigger fish to fry. Are you aware that there have been several incidents while you were away?”

“I’ve heard what’s been happening, yes.”

“What about you Bastila?”

“Juhani has briefed me.”

“Good, what are your opinions?”

“Do we know any more about the situation on Axum?” Carth asked

“We’re still in the dark Carth,” Dodonna said “I’ve sent a small force to investigate and they should be arriving there in the next few hours.”

“What about Manaan?”

“The rebuilding has started, but it will be at least two months before the Kolto processing facility is online and we still don’t know who did it.”

“Who is running the investigation?”

“It’s a joint effort between our people and the Selkath.”

“Perhaps a Jedi would be able to speed things up,” Bastila suggested

“We know you don’t have many Jedi to spare Bastila,” Chancellor Organa said.

“I’ve had some…new additions and I believe this would be an opportunity to get them involved.”

“New additions?”

“Yes, the Exile’s companions have arrived at the Jedi Temple.”

“The Exile’s companions?”

Bastila could see that the chancellor was thoroughly confused, and while she disliked lying to Chancellor Organa she had to maintain Carth’s cover as well as hers.

“Yes, it seems they came at his instruction.”

“What about the Exile?”

“He is not with them. They’ve told me he’s gone to search for Revan.”

“What is it with you damn Jedi vanishing?” Organa responded with frustration and sighed heavily. “Okay, whatever, we’ll run with it. Send whoever you feel would be best to Manaan.”

“What about Corellia,” Bastila asked “I still haven’t heard from my Jedi there.”

“We were discussing that,” Admiral Dodonna said “until we get report of the situation, I’m hesitant to send any more people into a volatile situation.”

“I understand,” Bastila replied “I am confident I will here from Jedi Ta’Nil and her padawan as soon as they are able.”

“Madam Chancellor,” Dodonna ventured “I’d like to pull Captain Corino’s task force away from the unknown regions and back to the Outer Rim. We’re stretched thin, and we may need those ships.”

Ogana knew the admiral had her dead to rights. Forn hadn’t wanted to put those ships out there in the first place and now she had the perfect reason to pull them back. Karin considered telling her no, but she knew Forn was right. The Navy was spread out and the fleet was diminished. They would need each and every ship they could get their hands on and the closer they were the better.

“Do it,” Organa replied

“Yes Ma’am.”

“Good. Now, it’s late and I’m tried. You all have assignments and you are all dismissed.”

Chapter 17

The six ships of the Republic task force dropped out of hyperspace on the edge of the Axum System. The two heavy cruisers and four Hammerhead class ships paused in space with Axum as a backdrop, and on the bridge of the cruiser Serroco Captain San Valum looked out from the bridge of his ship still not sure exactly what they were supposed to do here.

“Tactical, what do you see,” he asked

“Scanners show at least twenty to thirty ships in orbit around Axum Sir, with several more docked in orbiting shipyards.”

“By the Force,” Valum said, “We barely have that many protecting the main shipping lanes. What in the galaxy is going on here? Helm, take us in half power, order the task force to formation Bravo, and tactical, keep your eyes open.”

A chorus of “yes sir” came from his young officers, too young in Valum's opinion, but there was a shortage of officers these days. The Republic was still trying to rebuild from it's scrap with Malak even though it had been almost a decade, and ships, and men were hard to come by. As the ships under his command moved toward Axum, Captain Valum suddenly had a bad feeling about all this. Something just wasn't right and it didn't take a veteran starship officer to know it. The communications officer brought him out of his reverie

“Captain, I have an Admiral Perth of the Axum Defense Force.”

“Put him through Ensign.”

The young officer nodded and manipulated the comm system controls until the holoprojector activated and displayed the image of an older man in a gray uniform.

“To whom am I speaking?” the image asked

“I am Captain Valum of the Republic Cruiser Serroco, I am in command of this task force.”

“Captain, I am Admiral Perth of the Axum Defense Force and I am asking you to turn your ships around and return to Republic Space.”

Valum was both confused and curious at the same time.

“Admiral it was my understanding the this was Republic space.”

“I'm afraid you've been misinformed Captain. You are in the space of the sovereign planet of Axum, and you and your ships are not welcome here.”

“Are you telling me that Axum is not a member of the Republic Admiral?”

“Axum no longer requires the Republic's services Captain, we can stand on our own. Now, you will either leave or we will defend ourselves, Perth out.”

The transmission ended and the Admiral's image disappeared.

“Well, that was pleasant,” Valum commented to no one in particular as he tried to figure out what he should do. His task force was clearly outnumbered and his orders specifically forbade him from engaging in combat unless absolutely necessary. As a veteran of both the Mandalorian and Jedi Civil wars Valum was not stupid either. He'd seen too many ships and men needlessly lost but incompetent commanders, and he was not about to lose a single one of either. He turned to the comm officer,

“Open a channel to the task force.”

The man complied, “You're on Sir.”

“All ships, this is Captain Valum. We are returning to Coruscant immediately. Plot your hyperspace jumps and signal Serroco when ready, Valum out.”

He clasped his hands behind his back and looked out at Axum again. He didn't' know what the hell was going on, but he did know that Admiral Dodonna, the chancellor, and the Senate were not going to be happy about this situation. This could very well be the beginning of another major crisis for the Republic and he wasn't sure they could handle it at the moment.

“All ships signal ready Sir,”

“Very well, jump on my mark. Three-two- one-mark.”

The Republic task force jumped to hyperspace heading back the way they'd come, but Captain Valum had a feeling this wasn't the last they'd see of Axum.

Revan turned away another flurry of lightsaber strikes from the mysterious Sith. She was physically exhausted, he seemed tireless, and Revan was not sure how much longer her defense could hold out. Not only that but the dark side of the Force was immensely powerful here and Revan was sure the Sith would be a challenge even if she were at full strength. For the first time she could remember she was beginning to become desperate for a way to escape the situation, and what was worse was that her opponent seemed to know it.

“You tire Revan,” he said mockingly “Surrender and I may spare your life.”

“Surely you don't expect me to believe that,” she replied as their blades clashed again.

“Perhaps not, but we both know you cannot defeat me.”

Revan didn't offer a response instead calling on the Force to renew her yet again. She needed a healing trance, or a kolto injection, but neither seemed very likely to happen any time soon. She tried to think as she turned away his attacks, but she knew that many of her advanced Force techniques had been repressed by the Jedi Council when they wiped her memory. Not only that but she could feel her Force powers beginning to exhaust themselves. Too much longer and her body would simply give up.

Suddenly the Sith stopped his relentless barrage, closed his eyes, and reached toward Revan as if to call to her. Revan went from feeling tired to feeling nearly powerless. What was he doing to her? Her head began to swim and images began to flash through her mind. She called on the Force, but she could feel nothing. She turned her gaze on the Sith who smiled twistedly.

“I told you that you cannot defeat me Revan.”

Those were the last words Revan heard before her vision blurred and then went black.

***

Aeris lightsaber sliced through the weapon of another of the insurgents and she Force pushed him against the wall as she pressed on with the Royal Guard troopers behind her. Her attack had given Colonel Tigh time to organize her men and now they were pushing back the attackers. The dark side presence Aeris had originally felt still lingered over the battle but she had been unable to pinpoint its source.

Then, almost on cue, the attackers began falling back and the blaster fire died down. Several of the Royal Guard men believed they had won, but Aeris knew better. Her fears were confirmed as a woman in black appeared from the group of attackers. The dark side surrounded her and there was no doubt in Aeris mind that this explained why these dissidents were so well prepared and organized. The woman closed the distance between them until she stood in front of Aeris who dropped to a defensive stance, lightsaber ready.

“You have caused me far too much trouble Jedi. I thought perhaps my disciples could dispatch you, but I see I will have to do it myself.”

“Your plans, whatever they are, end here Sith,” Aeris replied. She had faced Dark Jedi before, why would this one be any different.

The woman laughed maliciously “You are a small obstacle in my path Jedi. You will not stop me.”

A lightsaber snapped to her hand, and the crimson blade ignited Aeris yelled back to Colonel Tigh,

“Colonel retreat, and get the king out of the palace!”

Then her battle with the Sith was joined as blaster fire began to fly around them again. Colonel Tigh, for her part, only watched for a second before turning to her second in command.

“Raton, take your men and fall back to the throne room now. Secure His Majesty, and take him to the escape transport. We'll cover you, Go!”

The other officer nodded and motioned to his mean who began to fall back immediately. The dissidents were pressing forward again past the dueling Jedi and Sith. Tigh fired several shots and them gave the rest of her men the retreat order. They began a tactical retreat, firing as they moved through the corridors. As they rounded a corner Tight ordered half her men to use their remaining grenades to slow the attackers. The blasts echoed behind them as they retreated even further. Reaching the throne room, the colonel found Raton and Captain Rees waiting for her.

“Orders ma'am?” Rees asked

“We're getting the hell out of here Captain, where is the king?”

“Already to the transport hangar Ma'am with my men.”

“Alright, let's get out of here.”

They moved back into the throne room and raised the force field behind them. As they arrived in the hangar they were met by Dustil Onasi.

“Where's Aeris,” he asked

“She's battling Sith, she ordered us to retreat.”

“A Sith!? I have to help her!”

“No,” Colonel Tigh responded firmly “You're coming with us, I'm in command here and I will not let you to throw your life away.”

“But Aeris needs me!”

“Don't argue with me, Jedi or not even I know that a Sith would tear you apart, now let's go.”

Dustil, to his credit, didn't argue any further and followed Colonel Tigh onto the second of the two armored transport craft that launched as soon as they were aboard.

Chapter 18

As the sun's rays broke over the horizon on Coruscant Bastila sat cross-legged in the tranquil main garden of the Jedi Temple. Her eyes were closed and her hands rested on her knees as she surrounded herself with the Force. She had found that daily meditation kept her much more at peace with herself and the main garden, with its many exotic plant species, and flowing fountains was her preferred place to meditate. As the time that she considered precious was coming to a close she became aware of another presence in the garden. She opened her eyes, saw Atris walking toward her, and rose to greet the elder Jedi.

“Bastila, I hope I'm not disturbing you.”

“Not at all, I was just finishing my daily meditation.”

“I see, in that case, I believe there is something that we must do to help make the Jedi Order whole again. I had a long discussion with Jolee and he agrees, for the most part, that we should appoint a new Jedi Council.”

“A Council? Now? With everything that's going on?”

“Yes, that is exactly why I think we should do it now. I think an established council would present a united front and give the other Jedi something to stand behind.”

Bastila considered what Atris was proposing and could find no fault in her logic. The presence of a Jedi Council on Coruscant might give not only the Jedi, but the Republic a symbol to take comfort from.

“Who did you have in mind for members?”

“Well, beyond you-”

“Me?” Bastila asked cutting her off “Surely not, I am barely a Jedi, let alone a master.”

“You are too hard on yourself Bastila,” Atris said sternly “You brought Jedi back to the temple, you organized them, and whether you like it or not they do look to you for as their leader.”

Bastila did not immediately respond to Atris pointed argument. Instead she turned her prospective inward. To be a Jedi Master was what she had wanted since she was just a girl training under Master Vandar on Dantooine, but could she really do it? Could she put aside the scars she had and her inner demons and actually guide young Jedi?

“What about my time as Malak's apprentice?”

“What about it?” Atris responded “What happened to you can happen to any Jedi. Malak tortured you, and attempted to use you to further his own ambitions. Your experience makes you even more qualified to off guidance against the Sith and the dark side. You must realize that it was not your fault.”

Bastila knew that Atris was right, and she wanted to let go of everything, but she felt that if she didn't hold it close she might fall again. She looked Atris in the eyes:

“I will accept the responsibility but I cannot simply forget what happened.”

“Don't forget Bastila, but don't let it haunt you so much that it dictates the course that your life runs.”

Bastila nodded “I will try, whom did you have in mind for the rest of the council?”

“Juhani, Brianna, Atton, and Visas.”

“I understand the others, but why Visas?”

“She has a tremendous command of the Force, and she was once Darth Nihlus apprentice. It was Gaven who turned her from the dark side, and she has expressed a desire to serve.”

“What about Jolee?”

Atris smiled slightly at the question.

“I believe his exact words were 'I'd rather kiss a Gamorrean.'”

Bastila laughed softly. It sounded exactly like something that Jolee would say. He had expressed his displeasure with the Jedi Council many times during their search for the Star Forge and she wouldn't have expected his opinion to have changed any. On the other hand, despite his cantankerous spirit the old Jedi was wise and Bastila had a feeling that perhaps she could convince him to change his mind.

“Let's go talk to him again, I think he will cooperate if we hound him enough.”

“Lead on,” Atris replied and the pair exited the garden together.

***

“Step away from her Sith.”

Gaven had seen the Sith temple on his approach to the planet, and upon arriving at the structure he found what could only be a Sith kneeling over a fallen Revan. The man, if you could still call him that, stood at Gaven's order and turned to face him. He reminded Gaven of Darth Sion but without the broken body.

“Revan belongs to the Sith,” he hissed “and you shall not take her from us Jedi.”

“You can try to stop me if you like,” Gaven replied.

He drew his lightsaber, the blue blade snapped on and Gaven charged the Sith. The defender brought his own red blade up to join the battle. They clashed just feet from the fallen Revan, and Gaven tested the Sith's defense by striking at his off hand, followed by a low swipe both of which were deflected easily. The Sith countered with a flourish of body strikes, left, middle, right, overhand. Gaven blocked and then pushed out with the Force catching his opponent off guard and knocking him back.

The Sith was quickly back on his feet and launched himself at Gaven who stepped aside deftly and landed a blow on the Sith's shoulder. He growled in pain and renewed his attack with more hatred than Gaven had felt from any other living being, even Sion. Despite that, Gaven defended the attack again and launched an offensive of his own using a technique designed to expose a weak defense. It was a technique that Revan had taught him once, ironically enough.

Irony aside the Sith's powerful, hatred filled attacks made him vulnerable to quick counters and Gaven knew he could exploit that. It was a weakness that even the most skilled Sith fighter exhibited and Gaven found it surprising that they had never adapted to something so damning. Gaven used a defensive posture to bide his time and it wasn't long before he found the opening he needed.

In frustration at Gaven's unyielding defense, the Sith lunged at him and Gaven stepped and slashed severing his saber hand. Gaven didn't stop there, as the Sithh fell to the ground Gaven drove his lightsaber blade down and into his back for a fatal blow. Then, he with drew it, switched it off, and ran to Revan. He assessed her condition, and determined that she was alive, but weakened and unconscious. He picked her up and began to carry her back to his ship.

***

On Corellia, Aeris was engaged in a battle of her own, and she was not winning. The Sith woman was much stronger then Aeris could have imagined and she was struggling to hold her own. The woman was back her up toward a wall and her fierce attacks left Aeris with few options. As Aeris tried to fend off another offensive the Sith reached toward her sent out a blast of Force energy that slammed her against the wall. Aeris' lightsaber clattered away and she crumpled to the floor.

“I am through playing with you Jedi. You have delayed me too long and my prize has escaped. For that, you will pay with your life.”

Aeris had heard about the pain that Force lightning could cause but she had never felt it until now. The dark side energy ripped into her body and while she had no desire to give the Sith the satisfaction the searing pain caused her to cry out. The Sith stopped the attack only to renew it a moment later. It was such that Aeris wanted to beg the woman to simply kill her, but she couldn't speak. Aeris soon lost the ability to even cry out as her body began to shut down, and Aeris Ta'Nil died with only the satisfaction that she had saved Corellia's king and protected her padawan from the Sith's wrath.

***

The armored Corellian Royal Guard transports streaked toward whatever destination they were bound for. Dustil didn't especially care at the moment. He had felt Aeris die, and he felt that he should have been there, that perhaps together they could have defeated the Sith. Colonel Tigh must have seen his sullen expression because she asked:

“Is something wrong?”

“Aeris is dead,” Dustil responded softly.

“How can you know that?”

“Through the Force, I felt her die.”

“I'm sorry.”

“Not as sorry as that Sith is going to be. Will I be able to contact the Republic when we get where we're going?”

“Yes, and since I don't know who I can trust we'll need all the help we can get.”

“We'll get it, and that Sith will pay for what she's done, I promise you that.”

Twilight began to set on Kashyyyk, and Mission stood silently underneath the lantern that hung above the hut door. The Jedi cloak she wore was drawn around her and its hood was raised over her head. She'd been keeping her silent vigil in this same spot each night for almost a week. Tonight was different though, tonight she waited for Zaalbar or the Wookie healer that had accompanied him inside to emerge. Finally, the door opened and Zaalbar stepped into the dim light with his head bowed.

“He is gone” the big Wookie said softly in his native language.

Mission embraced her friend and then looked up at him

“I'll contact Bastila.”

Zaalbar only nodded, and mission turned and walked away toward the village gate.

***

Shailyn hurried through the streets of lower Coruscant. She had less than a day before her target would be at a prime location for her to take action. If her damned informant hadn't been so slow she wouldn't have had to act so quickly. It was no matter though, she would do as she always had, corner her target, and eliminate it.

Chapter 19

Midday hung over Coruscant and Bastila sat behind a desk in one of the few offices in the Jedi Temple. She was mulling over the repair logs and Juhani's daily reports from the time she and Jolee were on Dantooine. The role of administrator was a new one for Bastila but at times she actually found sorting through the minutiae peaceful, a get away of sorts from the other goings on at the temple, such as they were.

The meeting she and Atris had with Jolee had gone reasonably well. It had taken the two of them well over an hour to convince the stubborn Jedi to become the fifth member of the new Jedi Council. He only agreed to do it on the condition that he be put in charge of training and left alone which Bastila had no problem with whatsoever. She had observed him when they traveled with Revan and more recently, with Dustil and she believed he was perfect for that sort of position. The plan now was for she and Atris to speak the other potential members individually before announcing the plan to the remaining Jedi. Such were Bastila's thoughts when the communicator on the desk chimed:

“Yes?” she said to the air

“Jedi Shan, this is Sergeant Arrin in communications, I have a message for you from Kashyyyk.”

Kashyyyk...Bastila knew that could only be one person, Mission. Mission had been almost as devastated as Carth when Revan had disappeared. It was only then that Bastila and Jolee discovered that Revan had been secretly training the young Twi'lek in the ways of the Jedi. Certainly they had noticed that she had potential, but both of them had thought the girl too reckless to be trained, Revan had disagreed and began training her anyway. With her master's departure, Jolee had suggested that she return with Zaalbar to the Wookie homeworld and aid his village as Jolee had done. He felt it would put her in better touch with the Force. That had been nearly six years ago and since then Mission had only called when she had questions, and she had not left Kashyyyk. Bastila wondered what had prompted her call this time.

“Put it through Sergeant.”

“Yes Ma'am.”

Seconds later the comm unit's projector activated and Mission's image appeared in front of Bastila. She noted the Mission was wearing a Jedi cloak which was a departure from her normal dress.

“Mission, how are you? It's good to hear from you.” Bastila greeted her.

“I'm fine, but I wish I was calling just to talk” Mission replied in a tone that made Bastila instantly concerned.

“Mission, what's wrong?”

“Big Z's father,” she replied solemnly “Freyyr died a few hours ago.”

“Mission, I'm terribly sorry. Is there anything I can do?”

Mission nodded “Zaalbar asked me to see if you, Jolee, and Juhani would come to Kashyyyk to be here when he is named the new chieftain.”

Bastila thought about what Mission was asking. Under normal circumstances there would have been no issue with the three of them going, but with all that was going on she was not sure it was wise to have all of them gone from the temple.

“I will see about getting Jolee to accompany me to Kashyyyk, but I will need Juhani to stay at the Temple. The Republic is in the middle of a crisis and I can't have all three of us gone from Coruscant.”

“I understand,” she replied “You can tell me about it when you get here, Mission out.”

The transmission ended and Bastila noted that Mission had a different tone in her voice, and a different weight to her words. It seemed to Bastila that the young girl she'd met with Revan on Taris was gone, replaced by a mature young woman. Perhaps Jolee's idea had worked after all. Bastila was sure she'd hear him gloat all the way to Kashyyyk.

Bastila rose from the desk and made her way to the training area where she found Jolee with Brianna and Mira. The two women were sparring with training blades and it reminded Bastila very much of the numerous training duels she'd had with Revan all those years ago. Jolee halted the session when he caught sight of her.

“Bastila, what brings you down here?”

“I am sorry to interrupt, but I need a private word with you Jolee.”

He nodded “We'll pick this up another time.”

The two women set their blades in a nearby weapons rack and left out a side entrance.

“The expression on your face tells me this isn't a social call,” Jolee remarked when they'd left.

“I'm afraid not, I just finished speaking with Mission. Freyyr has died.”

Jolee closed his eyes and bowed his head slightly. Bastila thought she even saw a tear run down the old Jedi's cheek.

“Freyyr was a tough old wook..and a good friend,” he finally said.

“I know, that is why I would like you to go with me to Kashyyyk. Zaalbar would like us to be there when he is named chieftain.”

“Absolutely,” he replied “When do we leave?”

“I need to speak with Juhani and Atris, to let them know what has happened. I will see also speak with Atton about taking the Ebon Hawk.”

“I'll be ready, just let me know.” Jolee replied

“I will”

Bastila left the training area and Jolee sat down cross-legged on the floor and closed his eyes as tears ran freely down his aged face.

***

Bastila kept moving and found Atris in the council chamber with Juhani. Both Jedi turned as she entered having sensed her approach.

“Bastila, what's wrong?” Juhani asked

“How did you know?”

“Your expression for one, and you have a sadness in your presence that I've felt...before.”

“Freyyr has died Juhani.”

“Zaalbar's father?”

“Yes,” she looked at Atris “a Wookie chieftain, and a good friend. Jolee and I would like to go to Kashyyyk to pay our respects, Juhani can I ask you to remain here?”

She nodded “I can stay.”

“I see,” Atris said “What about the council?”

“I only wish to put it off for a few days. Perhaps you could speak with the remaining members while I'm gone?”

“I will do that, is there anything else?”

“Yes, I would like to send Atton and Mira to Manaan to aid in the investigation there. We've also received a request from the chancellor's office for a Jedi Knight to accompany her to a speech she is making tomorrow. I need to speak with Atton anyway, so I will tell him about Manaan.”

“I will ask Brianna to accompany the chancellor” Juhani said.

“Thank you both”

“May the Force be with you.” Atris replied.

Chapter 20

“Admiral Perth, what of our Republic visitors?” The image of General Cirrus asked

“Gone Sir, they did not press as we thought they might.”

“Interesting, their commander was not a stupid man. No matter, we will demonstrate our new independence soon. Is our fleet ready?”

“At your command Sir.”

“I will let you know soon Admiral. Cirrus out.”

Cirrus deactivated the comm link and sat down at the desk in the president's office. He had expected the Republic to press harder for information about the status of President Rix. He had planned on making an example out of the small task force and perhaps he should have anyway, but he had another target in mind as well. The Republic would never know what hit them.

***

The Ebon Hawk shuddered just a little as she entered hyperspace. The mechanics at the temple had been trying to repair the structural damage and had actually made progress. Bastila made a mental note to thank them when she and Jolee returned.

“Tell me Bastila, how are you doing?”

Jolee's question caught Bastila off guard, but she suspected there was more to it than just a simple question. Still, she answered it simply:

“I'm fine, why do you ask?”

“Fine are you? Hmph, I don't need to be a Jedi to read the stress on your face. No, I don't think fine would quite describe it.”

Am I that obvious? Bastila asked herself. If Jolee had picked it up, had anyone else? She had been trying to use her meditation and the Echani techniques she learned from Brianna to keep herself balanced, and she had thought it was working.

“I will admit that recent events have stretched my resources, but I believe I am managing well all things considered.”

“You could ask for help you know. Juhani and I can take on more. I may be old, but I still have plenty of fuel in my tank.”

“The two of you do enough already,” she replied “You've been training Dustil, and Juhani has been managing the repairs.”

“That doesn't mean you can't delegate tasks Bastila. We can't have you falling over from exhaustion. Part of being a leader is knowing when to delegate.”

“I understand Jolee, but why are you bringing this up now?”

“The rank and responsibility of Jedi Master is not one to be taken lightly.”

So that was it, Jolee was concerned about the formation of the new Jedi Council.

“Do you think I'm not ready?”

“I didn't say that, but I think that you take on more than one person, even a Jedi, should.”

“Jolee I do have a responsibility-”

“To yourself,” he said interrupting her “if you don't take care of yourself you will never be able to take care of anyone else.”

Bastila stared at her old friend's face and she could tell he was very serious. It was true she had not taken much time for herself beyond her daily meditation, and perhaps she hadn't gotten as much sleep as she needed, but there was so much to be done. Still, perhaps she did need to take a little more time to relax.

“I understand your point.”

Jolee grunted “Good, you don't normally listen to what I tell you, but I suppose there's a first time for everything.”

Bastila smiled “Well, we have some time before we reach Kashyyyk so I'm going to take your advice and catch up on some sleep.”

She rose from the pilot's chair and made her way back to the port dormitory where she laid down and was asleep soon after. She awoke to Jolee shaking her gently:

“Bastila, we're coming up on Kashyyyk.”

“Mmmm...” Bastila groaned as she sat up in the bunk. She rubbed her eyes, and looked around. “How long have I been asleep?”

“Almost twelve hours.”

“What?! And you let me sleep that long?!”

“It's not like there was anything for you to do. Besides, don't you feel better?”

Bastila had to admit that she did feel much better. For the first time in awhile she felt rested, and relaxed.

“Yes, I do. Alright, let's go.”

They walked back to the cockpit together, and occupied the chairs. Bastila contacted Mission using the instructions that she'd transmitted.

“Bastila,” Mission said “I'm glad you made it. You can put the ship down on the old Czerka landing pad, I'll meet you there.”

“Understood, Bastila out.”

Bastila guided the Ebon Hawk into the atmosphere of the Wookie home world. She lowered the struts and set the ship down gently on the landing pad. As she and Jolee exited the ship, Mission approached them and the first thing Bastila noticed was that she was wearing what appeared to be a Jedi tunic.

“Bastila, Jolee, it's good to see both of you!”

She hugged both of them in turn, and then stepped back.

“I just wish it was under better circumstances.”

“As do we Mission,” Jolee said as he looked at the girl “I can see you've grown in the Force, as well as in character.”

Mission nodded “You were right Jolee, being here with Zaalbar and his people has been a different experience. At first, I thought you were just trying to get rid of me, but after I'd been here a few months I realized what you were talking about.”

“I'm glad you did, but we should head for the village, we can talk more later.”

She nodded “You're right, let's go.”

The trio walked together to Zaalbar's village and Mission led them to the great hall where Zaalbar was waiting for them along with several other Wookies.

“Welcome back my friends, it is good to see you” the big Wookie greeted them in his native tongue.

“It's good to see you too Zaalbar, I'm sorry about Freyyr.” Jolee responded.

“Thank you Jolee,” Zaalbar replied “My father would be glad to know that you are here to see me named chieftain. He remembered your time here fondly.”

“As do I.”

Zaalbar nodded “Mission can show you to where you may rest tonight, the ceremony will be at sunrise tomorrow.”

“Just follow me,” Mission said.

Once Mission showed them to where they'd be sleeping, and they were away from the Wookies she finally asked Bastila:

“You said there was trouble in the Republic, what's wrong?”

“There have been several terrorist attacks on various locations. We think they're related but we don't know for sure.”

“What kind of attacks?”

“Explosions on Manaan, a revolt on Corellia, and the president of Axum is dead and we're not sure who's in charge.”

Mission gasped “That's a lot of trouble”

“Indeed, and the chancellor is asking the Jedi to become increasingly involved.”

“I want to help,” Mission said “After the ceremony, I'll come back to Coruscant with you.”

“Mission are you sure?”

“Yes, I'm sure, I've done a lot here, but if I'm going to be a Jedi then I need to come back and help you.”

Bastila glanced at Jolee who nodded, and then she turned back to Mission.

“Alright, after the ceremony we'll all return to Coruscant.”

“Okay, now, we're supposed to join Zaalbar for dinner in an hour.”

“Where?”

“In the great hall, I'll meet you there.”

Mission started to leave, but Bastila stopped her

“Mission, there's one more thing. I”m sorry, I'm sorry that I ever doubted you.”

Mission smiled “Thank you, that means more to me than you can ever know.”

***

The following morning they gathered along with the entire Wookie village in the great hall. The lawmaker of the village presided over the ceremony.

“My friends,” he began in the Wookie tongue “We have lost a great ruler in Freyyr who has gone to the Shadowlands. He helped us see the truth of Chuundar's lies, and led us out of slavery. Now his son stands ready to lead us. Zaalbar, who brought Freyyr back from exile, and stood by his side when no other would. Are you ready to take your place as chieftain Zaalbar?”

“I am,” Zaalbar responded “I am ready to rule in the tradition of Bacca and of Freyyr.”

The chieftain held out the blade that Freyyr had given Zaalbar after Czerka was driven off Kashyyyk.

“By Bacca's blade, I name you chieftain, may your rule be long, and filled with prosperity.”

The Wookies let out a roar and the three Jedi applauded as Zaalbar took the blade and raised it over his head. Zaalbar lowered the blade, stepped down from the platform and approached his Jedi friends.

“Thank you for coming my friends, will you stay for the grand feast?”

Jolee spoke for them “I'm afraid we can't Zaalbar. The Republic is in grave danger, and we must get back to the temple.”

“I understand, if there is anything that we can ever do for you, just ask.”

Jolee nodded “Thank you, and may the Force be with you.”

***

As the Ebon Hawk streaked into the space above Kashyyyk Mission breached a subject that she hadn't had the courage to until now.

“Has there been any word from Revan?”

“No,” Bastila replied with a sadness in her voice “We haven't heard from her since she left, but the Republic is looking for her now as well.”

“The Republic? Why?”

“The Senate doesn't trust that she won't turn on them again.”

“That's ridiculous.”

“Perhaps to you and I, but they do not know Revan as we do.”

“I hope that someone else finds her before the Senate does.”

“So do I Mission, so do I.”

***

Atton pulled the courier ship out of hyperspace in view of the oceanic wonder of Manaan, and engaged the ship's main drive. The ship was older, but with almost no ships left at the temple he and Mira had had to borrow this bucket of bolts from the Republic.

“I still don't understand why we had to take this piece of space junk” Mira complained.

“Because, we're supposed to keep a low profile, the Ebon Hawk is just a little bit recognizable don't ya think? Besides, Bastila asked for the ship as a personal favor.”

“Right, where was she going anyway?”

“To Kashyyyk, she told me a friend of hers died.”

Mira could understand that she supposed. She'd seen too many people she cared about die, and if Bastila had lost a friend Mira could certainly sympathize.

“So what do we know?” she asked

“Not much, Atris said there was a Republic admiral in charge that we could talk with when we landed.”

“Do we even know what we're looking for?” Mira asked frustration creeping into her voice.

“Somebody planted those bombs so I'd say we're looking for someone.”

“Gee thanks captain obvious.” Mira said with a little smile. Despite his overconfidence and sarcasm which often drove her insane, Atton could always make her smile.

As they approached Manaan they were challenged by one of the two Republic warships in orbit.

“Approaching vessel, this is the Republic cruiser Reliant, please identify yourself and transmit your ID signature.”

“Reliant this is Jedi Knight Atton Rand aboard the Solar Wind, transmitting ID signature now.”

Atton pressed the necessary buttons and after a few seconds the cruiser responded.

“Solar Wind, identity confirmed. Admiral Lien is expecting your arrival and will meet you on the surface. You are clear to proceed, Reliant out.”

Atton pushed the ship's throttle forward and began his approach to Manaan's only spaceport of Ahto City.

“Well, at least that went well.” he remarked

“Yeah well don't expect it to get any easier from here,” Mira replied.

“I wouldn't dream of it.”

He guided the ship smoothly into Manaan's atmosphere and set it down easily in their assigned hangar. He lowered the boarding ramp and they descended into the hangar where they were met by a man in a Republic uniform.

“Admiral Lien I presume?” Atton asked

“That's me,” he replied “and you are?”

“Atton Rand.”

“and I'm Mira,”

“Well, I'm glad to have Jedi here, that's for sure. This investigation is going nowhere fast. We have very little evidence, and no suspects.”

“Great,” Atton commented “so where to we start?”

“Well, I'll take you to the Republic base and you can review what we do have. I'll let you decide what you want to do from there.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

Chapter 21

“I'd like to thank you for coming on short notice Jedi Kae” Chancellor Organa greeted Brianna as she entered the lift that would take them down to the dais where the chancellor would be speaking.

“You are welcome Chancellor, the Jedi are happy to help in any way we can.”

“I'd like you to stand next to me during the speech so that the people can see you. They need to know that the Jedi Knights have not abandoned them.”

“I agree, and I will do as you ask.”

The lift began to descend and Brianna positioned herself to the chancellor's left side while a diplomatic security officer flanked her on the right with two more behind her. Her assistant stood outside the formation to the right side.

The lift took only a few moments to reach it's destination and it opened into a hallway that led to the outside of the chancellor's palace where, Brianna knew, a crowd of thousands had gathered to hear their leader speak. Additionally the speech was being broadcast all over Coruscant by the news service and it was also being broadcast on delay to many of the other Core Worlds.

Brianna kept stride with the chancellor as the formation made it's way down the hallway. As they reached the end the doors opened and they stepped out onto the dais where Republic soldiers had already taken up position. The crowd erupted into cheers as they caught sight of the very popular Chancellor Organa, who played the part of the politician well, waved to them, smiled, and nodded in their direction before stepping to the microphone and beginning to speak:

“My friends, thank you for the warm reception,” the crowd quieted so as to hear her words. “As many of you know there have been several incidents that have compromised the security and safety of our great Republic. We do not know at this time who is responsible for these incidents, but I assure you that once we do they will be brought to justice.”

The crowd erupted into cheers again and Organa waited for them to die down before she continued. Brianna had stopped listening to the speech and was scanning the crowd. She knew she was there for a symbolic presence, but that didn't mean she couldn't serve a purpose as well. She stretched out with the Force, feeling the emotions of the crowd which were largely positive. There was some apprehension, and a little fear, but that was to be expected given the state of the Republic. Then, Brianna caught a movement. She focused in on it, and saw a woman draped in tight fitting attire standing near the front of the crowd. She was raising, something...a blaster! She had a blaster! The woman was fast but Brianna was faster, she lit her lightsaber as the shot was fired and deflected it harmlessly away as panic set in over the crowd. Brianna kept her eyes on the woman as the security men dragged the chancellor back into the building. The woman was trying to get lost in the crowd but Brianna made a leap off the dais and landed near her. She sent out a wave of Force energy and stopped the woman in her tracks putting her in stasis. The woman struggled to free herself

“Ugh...what have you done to me?!”

“Do not attempt to free yourself, you will not be able to move until such time as I release you.”

“Jedi scum, you'll get no information from me.”

“Perhaps, Jedi do not torture prisoners, however I don't believe Republic Intelligence has any such reservations. You may wish to consider that before making any rash decisions.”

The woman said nothing as Republic soldiers began converging on their position blaster rifles pointed at the woman. Brianna turned to them

“She cannot move, but I will release her so that you may take her into custody.”

Brianna released the stasis and the unknown assailant looked around her as if contemplating her odds before resigning herself to the fact that she had been caught. One of the soldiers produced a pair of binders and put them on her wrists.

“In the name of the Republic, you are under arrest for attempted murder of the chancellor,” the guard told her “You have the right to remain silent, you have the right to representation of your choosing or a court appointed defender should you have none.”

Brianna followed them as they marched the woman into the chancellor's palace. They walked through the halls and eventually ended up in the security department where the woman was searched and placed in a holding cell. As Brianna waited with the guards for Republic Intelligence officers to arrive Juhani came into the room.

“Brianna! Are you alright?”

“I am fine,” Brianna replied “The assassination attempt was aimed at the chancellor, not me.”

“Is the chancellor alright?”

“I haven't spoken with her since the incident, but I was able to successfully deflect the blaster shot away from her so I believe she is fine.”

“I saw it all on the holonet, do we know who she is yet?”

“No, but I've been told I'm not allowed to speak with her until Republic Intelligence arrives.”

“Her name is Shailynn Bos,” said a new voice coming from behind the two Jedi.

They both turned to face the newcomer, a human of medium height with short brown hair, brown eyes, and wearing what most would consider very unassuming clothing.

“Davil Caronis, Republic Intelligence,” he said introducing himself. “I've seen the security holos and I immediately recognized Miss Bos. She's as skilled an assassin as any in the galaxy and has quite a large price on her head in several systems.”

“I see,” Brianna said “And you didn't know she was on Coruscant?”

“No,” he admitted “We didn't. The agent we had following her was found dead on Tatooine.”

“That's what you get for trying to tail me,” came the prisoner's voice from her cell.

Davil walked past Brianna and over to the front of the holding cell.

“You'll pay for your crimes now assassin, the Republic may not believe in the death penalty, but there are enough people who will pay for your miserable hide that all we have to do is pick the highest bidder.”

“You can't do that, I have rights.”

“Do you? What about the people you've killed? What about their rights? No, you'll never see the inside of a court room. After we've finished interrogating you you'll simply disappear.”

Brianna was appalled at the notion that they would simply kill the woman no matter what she had done.

“The Jedi will no allow-”

“This is not a Jedi matter,” Davil replied “We thank you for your dedication, but the prisoner is ours. You can leave now.”

Brianna was tempted to land a well placed palm strike to the agent's chest and teach him a lesson, but she repressed the idea knowing Juhani would not allow her to do such a thing. In fact it was Juhani who said

“We should leave Brianna.”

Brianna only nodded and started to follow Juhani out of the room, but stopped.

“No, I will not simply turn this woman over to you. She may hold the key to what is going on in the Republic right now, and if we are turn back whatever forces seek to destroy us then I want to find out what she knows. There will be a Jedi Knight present while she is questioned...namely me.”

Davil turned and walked over to where the two Jedi were standing.

“You don't have that kind of authority here Jedi.”

“Don't I? Why don't we ask the chancellor what she thinks?”

“Very well, have it your way, but we're transferring her to Intelligence headquarters immediately.”

“Then I'm coming with you. Juhani, I will meet you back at the Temple later.”

The Cathar nodded “I will let Atris know what is happening.”

***

The Corellian Royal Guard transports set down in a cloud of dust and Dustil emerged along with Colonel Tigh, five of her men, and Captain Rees emerged from the other transport with the king, and the rest of his Unit One troops. Dustil surveyed where they'd landed and it looked to him like some sort of vacation home, but Dustil could also see anti-air batteries as well as guard towers and knew they were at least safe for now.

“Where are we?” he finally asked the colonel.

“We're at the king's personal retreat. It's located in the mountains above Coronet and only a few people know the location. We're safe here and I'll get you to the comm suite so you can get us some help here.”

The entire group entered the retreat through the front door and they were greeted by a uniformed Royal Guard officer who saluted Colonel Tigh before speaking.

“I had a feeling you might show up Ma'am. I've ordered double patrols and activated all the defenses.”

“Good work Major, Jedi Knight Dustil Onasi, Major Victor Salas.”

Dustil shook the major's hand.

“Good to meet you Major.”

“I didn't think there were any Jedi left, I'm glad to see we've got one here.”

“There are a few of us around still, but what I really need is access to your communications.”

“You got it, follow me.”

“Go with the Major,” Tigh said “I want to help get the king settled and make sure he's secure.”

Dustil nodded and followed Major Slas through the villa to a lift that took them down where they exited into what was clearly a military facility. He lead him to a room where several soldiers were sitting behind consoles.

“This is our operations center. Sergeant Han over there will set you up with the communications suite.”

Dustil walked over to where the Major had indicated and the Sergeant rose from his chair.

“She's all yours.”

Dustil looked over the console and it looked similar to the ones he'd seen on starships and even at the Sith Academy. He entered the necessary commands to contact the Jedi Temple.

***

Juhani entered the Jedi Council Chamber where she found Atris alone. The Jedi Master looked up at her as she entered.

“Juhani, what is it? Is the chancellor alright?”

Juhani nodded “The chancellor is fine, Brianna captured the assassin and has stayed behind to help question her.”

“Perhaps we can finally shed some light on all of this. The dark side has wrapped itself around all that is going on, and I fear if we do not uncover the source the Republic may be destroyed.”

Juhani started to respond but her comm-link interrupted her

“Communications to Juhani.”

“This is Juhani, go ahead.”

“We have a message coming in ma'am, from Corellia.”

She looked at Atris “It must be Dustil and Aeris,” she spoke into the comm-link “Can you patch it to my comm-link?”

“Yes ma'am, here it comes”

“This is Juhani.”

“Juhani, it's Dustil.”

“Dustil! It's good to hear your voice are you and Aeris alright?”

“I'm fine, but Aeris...she's dead.”

“Dead? What happened?”

“A Sith, a powerful one, led the insurgents that attack the Royal Palace. I escaped with the Royal Guard, the king, and his protective detail. Aeris stayed behind to fight the Sith. We need help Juhani, we don't know who we can trust. There were Royal Guards, CDF, and CorSec with the rebels. We can't contact anyone else.”

“Dustil we will get you help, are you safe?”

“For now, yes.”

“I will contact the chancellor and your father, we will not let this stand.”

“We'll be waiting, Onasi out.”

Juhani looked again at Atris “It seems we now have a little more light in the darkness.”

“So it does.”

“I will go see the chancellor personally, can you try to get through to Bastila?”

“Yes, I will contact the Ebon Hawk, they should be almost back from Kashyyyk by now.”

Juhani nodded, and headed out of the chamber at a jog.

***

When she arrived at the Republic Senate building Juhani practically ran through the corridors nearly knocking several people over as she made her way to Carth's office. The door was closed when she arrived and she pressed the annunciator.

“Come,” came a voice from within

Juhani entered as the door opened and stood in front of Carth's desk.

“Juhani? What is it?” Carth asked as he saw the haggard look on her face.

“I just received communication from Corellia, from Dustil.”

“Dustil!” Carth exclaimed practically leaping out of his chair, “What happened? Is he alright?”

“He said that he's fine, and he also told me that the Corellian rebels are being led by a Sith.”

“A Sith?!”

“Yes, he escaped the battle at the palace with the king and soldiers loyal to him.”

Carth came around from behind the desk, “Come with me, we have to see the chancellor.”

As they walked out of the office Carth pulled out his comlink “Onasi to Dodonna.”

“I'm here Carth,” came the admiral's disembodied reply.

“I have Juhani with me here, and she's received word from Corellia.”

“Meet me at the chancellor's office,” Dodonna replied

“We're already on our way, Onasi out.”

Carth and Juhani hurried to a nearby lift and took it up to the floor where Chancellor Organa had her office. It was the most guarded floor in the entire building and despite the attempt on her life Karin Organa had insisted on being allowed to remain there where she had finished her speech via holonet. Forn Dodonna was already in the office when Carth and Juhani briskly walked through the outer door. Chancellor Organa, seated at her desk, looked remarkably calm for someone who'd recently been shot at.

“I understand you've heard from your Jedi on Corellia Juhani,” the chancellor said as they stood in front of her.

“Yes, Dustil contacted me approximately an hour ago. He stated he was fine, but informed me that Aeris Ta'nil was dead. She died fighting a Sith that led the Corellian insurgents.”

“I'm sorry to hear that, what about the king?”

“The king is alive and in a secure location, but they need our help. Dustil said that there were soldiers from all of Corellia's forces with the rebels and they can't trust anyone.”

Organa nodded “Admiral Dodonna, how many ships can we commit to securing Corellia?”

“I have five cruisers that just finished extended repairs and are ready for battle, I also have ten additional ships in the Outer Rim that we can add to make a sizable fleet.”

“Do it, this is our highest priority. Carth I assume that you will want to lead this mission?”

“I wouldn't have it any other way Ma'am.”

“Forn?”

“Fine with me, Carth is still the best we have.”

“Juhani, what about the Jedi?”

“We are attempting to contact Bastila now, but I assure you the Jedi will stand with the Republic.”

“Good, let's get moving on this people, dismissed.”

The trio of two soldiers and a Jedi left the office together and the discussion began immediately.

“Forn, how soon can we get those ships in from the Rim?”

“I'll contact Captain Jereth and get them moving immediately. They can meet you at Corellia.”

“Which five cruisers will I have here?”

“Coruscant, Liberty, Malachor, Cathar, and Telos.”

“I'll take the Telos as my flagship.”

“I'll let the captain know immediately. Juhani, how many Jedi can we expect to have,” Dodonna asked turning to her.

“I will have to see if Atris has gotten through to Bastila, if she has then you'll have three of us.”

“Good enough. I will speak with the two of you later.”

“Juhani, contact me when you hear from Bastila,” Carth said.

“I will.”

The trio parted ways each heading off to fulfill their own part of the impending rescue mission.

When Juhani arrived back at the Jedi Temple she was surprised to find Bastila with Atris in the council chamber.

“Bastila? You're back?”

“Yes, we had just come out of hyperspace when Atris contacted us, she has told me what's happened while we were gone. Is the chancellor safe?”

“Yes, and Brianna has gone to interrogate her would-be assassin.”

“In that case I believe we can focus on the Corellia mission. I believe we should accompany the fleet in the Ebon Hawk, it will allow us greater flexibility to attack the Sith directly.”

Juhani nodded “Yes, I don't know where Dustil is, but he did say he believed they were safe.”

“Very well, is Carth leading the Republic's ships?”

“Yes, he's been placed in command.”

“Good, then the four of us will take direction from him.”

“Four?” Juhani questioned

“Yes, Mission came back from Kashyyyk with us.”

At that moment Jolee and Mission came into the chamber.

“Juhani!” Mission exclaimed

“Mission, it's good to see you!”

The two Jedi exchanged a quick hug and Juhani stepped back to examine the young Twi'lek. Mission was dressed in a dark brown Jedi tunic, and black boots, and her lightsaber hung from her belt. It was clear to Juhani that she had matured greatly during her time on Kashyyyk.

“Now,” Bastila said “I will let Carth know that we are ready to go as soon as he is ready and Atris, I will have to ask you to remain at the temple.”

“I have no problem with that,” Atris replied.

Bastila's comlink chimed interrupting any further discussion

“Bastila here,”

“Jedi Shan, this is Sergeant Arrin there is a ship coming in.”

“A ship? Do we have an ID signature on it?”

“Nothing that matches Republic registry ma'am.”

“And they want to land here?”

“Yes ma'am.”

“Did they say why?”

“No ma'am, they refused to answer questions.”

Bastila was both concerned and curious at the same time.

“Allow them to land, we will meet them in the hangar.”

“Do you need additional security ma'am?”

“No, we can handle it, Shan out,” she stowed the comlink and turned to her friends “let's go meet our visitors, whoever they are.”

The five Jedi made their way to the hangar bay and watched as the ship landed. It was an older ship, Bastila noted and she also noted, as she was sure the others did, that there was a very powerful presence aboard that ship. It wasn't one that Bastila recognized, but it was very strong in the Force. Atris, on the other hand, felt the presence and knew she had felt it before, but she couldn't place it. It was like seeing a friend that you haven't seen in years and not being able to recognize their face.

The group entered the hangar bay in anticipation as the loading ramp of the vessel lowered. Bastila's hand drifted toward her lightsaber as a figure wearing a black cloak with it's hood drawn up began to descend down the ramp. She could sense no evil in the figure, but she knew that evil intent could be disguised as well. They watched as the figure approached them, and then spoke.

“I mean you no harm good Jedi,”

“That voice,” Jolee said “I know I've heard it before, but where...”

Before he could finish his thought Bastila spoke to the new arrival

“If you truly mean no harm then show yourself,” she demanded.

“As you wish” replied the female voice.

They watched as hands, human hands, appeared out of the robe. The hands reached up, and slowly lowered the hood, and Jolee and Atris both knew the visitor instantly. Her face, and her fire red hair were unmistakable, and it was Atris who spoke one name

Vima is the daughter of Nomi and Andur Sunrider. Her character has been explored in several of the Tales of the Jedi books, and in my story here she is one of the last remaining Jedi Masters. (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Vima_Sunrider)
