strategyinformer.com apologizes

Hello,

First and foremost, we at strategyinformer.com are sorry for our poor hosting practices and ignorance. There is no excuse and none will be offered. I am most directly responsible, as I am the one who actually searches for and uploads mods to the site. All responses to emails thus far have been from the site owner/founder, Kresimir, so I hope anyone who read those, and is in any way dissatisfied with his reply, will read this as well.

As I said, I feel an attempt at an excuse is not necessary, perhaps even insulting. All mod authors that object to having their mods hosted at out site, please email us or reply to this thread with the specific mod and it will be removed immediately.

My hosting practices will change. Certainly with any mod that doesn't specify free rehosting, I will contact the author at the least. At the most, if the community wishes, I will cease to use KoTOR Files as a source. If we are allowed to continue to host your mods, using proper etiquette all mod authors will be clearly indicated.

I apologized on behalf of the site, now I would like to apologize personally. Please understand that no disrespect was intended.

Regards,

Mark

Hi,

I would like to give an open public apology for the mods we've hosted on Strategy Informer without author permissions. Any author that would like to have his mods removed from SI, please PM me and I will have them removed.

We've managed to get dozens of authors mad at us for doing so but I would like to think that at least some good was done from our side, for giving such files additional mirrors and exposure. Ok the problem was that authors didn't asked for it in the first place so...

...all in all, it is our fault, we neglected to look at the matter from all angles.

In future we will make sure to add only files that don't have any exclusivity pointed out in them and with full credits.

In a week or two we will also be launching user mod/map upload tools that will allow authors to upload them directly. So in the end we wont be needed to run around the net and upload mods ourselves and create havoc with authors at the same time. But I don't think you'll want to hear about that.

Sorry and thank you for your hard work and the time we had to host your files.

Regards,

Mark, I don't think that ceasing to use KotORFiles as a source is necessary, however as Jamie can probably attest to, the KotOR modding community are kind of sticklers about permissions to host their files. Use it as a starting point, but make sure you contact authors privately (even if their read-mes do not make any mention of hosting restrictions).

I'm personally not thrilled with the way the site is currently set up so I would feel uncomfortable having my own mods hosted there (ie. no crediting to the author on the file info page unless you click 'more info' to view the read-me -- let's face it, most people won't read that). If that were to change I really don't think I'd have a problem with it one way or the other.

Edit: Let me clarify. Add developer/author name to your info pages and you can host as much of my work as you want. I'd just like to be informed prior to it. :)

Thanks, jonathan7. Hopefully we can get this all sorted out.

*edit*

Inyri, absolutely. I was actually asked by Kres to be sure to include the authors in all description fields, but I got lazy. If we are allowed to continue hosting most mods, laziness will not get the better of me.

I accept the apology...and in turn, I apologize for the way I responded. I do have a slight suggestion for your site: add a part on the mod's page that says "Author: <InsertName>". As far as hosting goes, I am always fine with my mods being hosted elsewhere as long as I am asked beforehand. That's the one thing I learned from experience at KotOR2Files...

I accept the apology :)

Though there aren't lots of mods of me, all I wanted was a heads-up your also hosting it on your site.

And a small mention of who made the mod wouldn't hurt as extra info.

You don't need to do reviews like on K-files, but its kind of a pain to just see

download mod...

Anyway enough ranting about this.

It's in the past now.
