Creating scars in Photoshop

I'm not much of an artist, but I reckon it shouldn't be too hard to create a scar for a character, a la this fine mod, if someone can point me in the right direction. I've googled for tutorials, but so far I've only come across lame methods that don't work or produce results that are really cheesy. I know I'd have to create an "extra mesh" so when I "put a scar on the right side of the head, it doesn’t show up on the left eye as well", but I figure that's another problem for another time.

 

Hmm... I didn't intend for this to be a modding request, just a request for guidance, so I guess I put this is the wrong forum.

This is a better tutorial than anything I've come across so far, but it's not quite what I was looking for. The scar isn't harsh enough (it looks like a bump on the skin instead of a crevice), but this is a start I suppose. Thanks.

Most scars are raised like the one in that tutorial. The scars in my mod usually would only happen if there is a substantial loss of tissue or would result from not taking care of the wound while it healed. I took the liberty to exaggerate the severity of the scars in my mod. I used some references that i googled but mostly i just did what i thought would look cool.

 

As for tutorials, I'm not very familiar with photoshop tutorials so i don't have any to point you to. You could always just use my mod for reference or copy & paste parts of the scars from my mod and do a little photoshop magic to blend them in.

 

If you look at the scars in my mod you will see that i used lighting to give the illusion that the skin around the dark scar tissue is slightly raised. Stitches are used to hold the skin together so that the scaring happens within a smaller area. Wounds that are not stitched together can sometimes heal while the skin is pulled apart creating deep dark scars like the ones in "Wound in the Force". So, if you want scars that show a deep wound, use deeper color. Also, scar tissue is usually the same no matter what skin color its on so if i were to put a deep scar on one of the darker skinned heads the skin might be darker than the scar tissue.

you can do it if you unwrap the model in 3ds max so the mesh is not mirrored.

But uvw mapping a head model is the most boring thing in the world. Just my opinion

the interest is that you'll not have to add anything to the model...

 

Edit: Anyway, if you want to make a new head you'll have to deal with it
