Penguin Unit Posted August 22, 2008 Share Posted August 22, 2008 As some of you may know, JKA can be modded with a number of programs. The mapping one is GTK Radiant. Milkshape has many importers and exporters for various file types. One of the importers is capable of importing a Quake 3 .map file, which JKA uses. Then it can export to a format which I can use to import into Gmax. Also, as of recent, Quanon and a bunch of other people figured out how to make new modules work. So it occured to me today that I could make the basic layout of a module in GTK Radiant, save it as the default .map file, import into Milkshape, export as a .obj or some such thing, import that into Gmax, then export as an .mdl file after setting it up. Do you guys think that may work? And before you start saying "ZOMG PORTING IT'S ILLEGAL", GTK Radiant isn't just a JKA map editor. It works for a number of games. Inyri Posted August 22, 2008 Share Posted August 22, 2008 It might work, but that just means you'll have sub-standard JKA fan quality maps in a game that supports a great deal more detail and flexibility. You'll get a much better result by just doing it all in the modeling software. It'll just take longer to do it in GTK Radiant and ultimately look worse for the effort. I frankly suck at a lot of Gmax's functions, and terrain isn't something I can really do. A lot of stuff I see in KotOR would be possible in Gmax, but a lot of it also looks like stuff Radiant could handle. I suppose Gmax could still cover for inside and buildings and what not, but for outdoors, Radiant + Easygen/other JKA terrain maker would be the way to go for me. What do you mean by taking longer? I can shape a basic interior room very quickly in Radiant without problems, and the same would take me two or three times as long to produce in a modeling program.
