Glux.nl
Hey guys, Some years ago I finished Kotor1 and Kotor2. Last year I bought a new laptop (mid-end specs) since my older PC kept crashing and locking up, probably cause of it's age. Yesterday I decided I want to play both games again, starting with Kotor1. Now it seems that my laptop's graphical onboard chipset doesn't have the fancy features like hardware shader support for instance. I do not have any trouble running graphical applications at high resolutions but as soon as those shiny new technologies are used by a program, my FPS drops to something around 10. Is there any way to tweak down Kotor1 and Kotor2 so the games are using minimal resources from my graphic chipset? And so that I can run them with a mere 20 FPS? I notce that things like shadows, clouds and smoke really ruin my FPS. I'm trying to run the game on an Acer Aspire 5102 (5100 series) with XP SP3. AMD Turion TL-50 1,6 Ghz dualcore. 1024 MB RAM (unknown brand, probably native Acer) Ati x1100 video chipset using 256 MB of my RAM 4200 RPM 100 GB HDD (unknown brand, probably native Acer) Now I know this isn't a gaming platform but knowing I can run games like UT2004 and Jedi Academy with mid settings at high resolutions while still having 25+ FPS, I figured there has to be a way to get Kotor running while disabling special graphical effects. Help please. EDIT: I've read the above sticky about running the game on a laptop, but the problems and solutions in it won't save me. It's just that I have a very cheap graphical chipset, not supporting any special features. The game ran fine on my old PC, which had a Geforce 4 TI4600. Here's the swinfo.txt from the hardware scan. Jae Onasi
Did you check out this ATI dualcore sticky, too? That might have help for you. I'd turn down the resolution and turn off grass and see if that helps, too.
Glux.nl
Turning down the resolution and turning off grass did not help so far. Will try the dualcore topic in a few minutes. Gotta figure out first if installing those AMD drivers won't conflict with my current CPU drivers. As laptops aren't so keen on general drivers, they need their own specific drivers most of the time. EDIT: I did all the steps (a few weren't necessary due to XPSP3) written in the AMD dualcore topic but still no progress. In the options menu I have lots of FPS but as soon as I go ingame or even in the main menu where Malak is standing with the steam/clouds rising from the ground, I have a terrible FPS rate. I really think it has something to do with the shaders being used by the game. Isn't there any way to make a sort of trade off: lower graphics/more performance, by turning the usage of shaders off? I know that quite some games offer detailed graphic settings to be tweaked by either their ingame options or by editing configuration files. EDIT2: I just did some testing. It seems I have low FPS everywhere, not only when smoke is being displayed on my screen.
ChAiNz.2da
Have you tried the lag fix for ATI? In swkotor2.ini, go in the "Graphics Options" section and add the line: "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1". This seems to work on some machines (both ATI and nVidia) and helps in both games. It's not just restricted to Dantooine either in my experience, at least for nVidia cards. Worth a shot
