Hi guys,

I recently got a copy of kotor 2 after I had played the first one, man I loved that game. After getting sadly star wars geeky excited at playing the sequel I was devestated at having the joy snatched from me.

I installed the game easily. Patched it with 1b version. placed in mss.dll file. Changed the game display as well as the target on a shortcut as well to run i core processor.

The game loaded well. It allowed me to sort out my character how I wanted spending time in slecting certain force specialities and when the music clip started with the story line writing star wars style I was like a little kid again.

After this the game crashed. I was devastated!!!!!!. I have seen on many web site forums many many people stating the same problems. I have windows 7 intel core 3 new laptop. But I have also seen that the intel video thing for my computer and hope that thsi will not be the problem stopping me playing this great game????

I have updated drivers as well but nothing.......Please please please can someone help me.....I have gone through all the steps listed on this forum which are in great detail but still it crashes in the same place please someone must have a solution???? It cant just not work work intel videos as there must be a large amount of us in same position and that would alienate a market. I am based in th uk!!!!!

Your thanks in advance!!!!!

That post that I linked to is in a thread full of saves.

Does that link have any saves other than character creation? had no problem doing that, just want to get past a point in the game where mine locks up (Swoop Platform to save Bastilla). also, is there more than one post with a thread full of saves?

Try using the game's configuration utility to post your system specs:

Post your system specs

Sometimes we're just not going to be able to help you if we don't know what kind of hardware you have on your machine. If you don't know what you have on your machine, then follow these steps below:

  • If you're using Vista or Windows 7, go into your game folder, find "launcher.exe" and right-click on it. Select "properties", then "compatibility" and check the box beside "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)". Then check the box next to "Run this program administrator" and hit "OK". (EDIT by Q)
  • Bring up the launcher menu for Kotor 1 or 2 (by running "launcher.exe").
  • Click on "Configure".
  • Click the "Scan Hardware" button on the lower center of the window.
  • Click "Yes" to continue.
  • Click "Details" to view your system specs.
  • Click "Save Report" and save the file to your desktop.
  • Whenever you post your problem, open the file you just saved and copy and paste the contents to your post.

You can leave out the keymapping and everything after that.

That post that I linked to is in a thread full of saves.

Found a link (via your link) to saved game files (download K1 Taris/partial Dantooine archive). This person played a different character class and completed more of the game than I had (Zax's bounties, etc) so I'm not entirely sure of the background at this point. The save I copied into my game put me in right after the Swoop race. Bastilla had freed herself and we had to fight to get out of that section. I am now able to continue the game (find a way off Taris) by obtaining codes from a Sith Military base. Thanks for your assistance. Hopefully I'll be able to get further without any more issues. :thmbup1:

TO Q..........

Thank you for getting back to me so promptly......Please find the information requested as below.........Just to give you an update. I tried using a saved game file that I downloaded from acredible site to see if that would get me round the crash after the character selection process but the game crashes there as well just before it loads........I have done everything in terms of compatability to service pack 2 and all tyhe rest of the options as well......I really hope that someone can help me on this very frustrating problem!!!! I just want to play the game!!!!!

New problem now. Finally got off Taris on the Ebon Hawk, made it to Dantooine, and the character is now a Jedi Consular. Have been sent to the Meditation Grove as part of Jedi trials and the game is locking up again while loading (from Matale Grounds). Had an issue getting into the Grounds as well, but was able to enter it from another point on the map. Is this a problem that others are having as well? Any possible solutions to this issue? Is this what I have to look forward to (locking up while loading new areas) if I continue playing the game? Any more suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

^Your problem is definitely unusual and if you've already tried reinstalling the game I'm not sure how to fix it.

@HOVA69: Try using the original swkotor2.exe from the patch instead of the one that was updated by SecuROM.

Either my computer likes me or the Best of PC version of KotOR I doesn't require the admin rights trick mentioned in this thread to get it running. (Just got BoPC this past weekend to replace my original 2004 KotOR I discs.) Just thought I'd let anyone considering getting KotOR I via the Best of PC pack know that tidbit, whether they're replacing their original discs or getting it for the first time. :)

Tried one more time to uninstall and reinstall following all directions as before. After adding my saves, I still lock up while trying to enter the Meditation Grove from the Matale Grounds on Dantooine (final task to become a Padawan). There are 2 possible entrances (heading south from Grounds) and the game locks up while loading the next area (about half way loaded) from both entrances. Looked again at the other links with all of the saves, and unfortunately it looks like there are none available to enter the Grove or put me in just past that. If you have no other suggestions or links to a save that would let me play further, I am convinced it is a Vista compatability problem and have no choice but to give up. Thanks again for your help.

Sounds like you might have a non-US version of the game, which means that you're going to have to reinstall the game using the international patches. They can be found here. There are two, and you'll have to install 1.0a before installing 1.0b.

Q I think that I got it working!!!!! I tried it again and it worked I think it was the exe that you mentioned and my patch was for us version and not the uk where I am....You are however a true legend and now I can get into my sad geeky star war world again.....My wife will be so happy that I will now be distracted....cheers Q son!!!!!! After getting a new laptop with an Intel i5 CPU and nvidia graphics, I installed K1 & TSL without a problem. I am curious about the instructions to make the computer use only 1 core for the game; The multi-core instructions (2nd post in this thread, list under item 8) were difficult for me to understand what I needed to do.

Right-click on the game's icon on your desktop and select "Properties". Under the "shortcut" tab you should see a box marked "target" that has the location of the game's .exe in it. If the location is C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\SWKotOR\swkotor.exe, then following those instructions, the target would be changed to:

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C start "SWKOTOR" /D "C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\SWKotOR" /high /affinity 1 "C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\SWKotOR\swkotor.exe"

Then you just have to hit "Apply" and "OK".

Hey guys, u have to help another Jedi from Europe ;)

I just finished Kotor 1, and tryed to reroll Kotor 2 since 2 days, im still lvl 2...u can guess already something`s wrong right ? ;)

I was able to play Kotor 1 with not a single crash or lag suprise suprise ;)

I can start Kotor 2 as usual, but i have permanent freezes all 5-10 seconds everywhere inside the game menu inside the game within dialogs...the force...ehm lag is everywhere. ^^

I made everything as i did with Kotor 1. A clean Installation as Admin + international patches first 1.0a then 1.0b. I start all *.exe* with compability to Windows XP Service Pack 2. I put the "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1" into the swotor2.ini under Graphic Options. Directx 9.0c ist also present on my pc. I also tryed these strange mss32.dll but for godsake the horrible lags/freezes dont fade.

If i check the auto hardware detecting its shows the same as before in Kotor 1 ( rdpdd chained dd 2048 MB ) yeye my videocard dosent meet the requirements blabla. But unlike in Kotor 1 i have rly the feeling as would i play with a Pc from 1992. :p

I tried 8 different Videocard driver from amd/ati but no change. Is there anyone with a clue to this ? Kotor 1 & Kotor 2 have the same engine or not ?? Why it works perfectly for the older game and the newer one sucks thats strange.

help ;)

My specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Amd 6 core 3,6 ghz

Ati Radeon HD 6950 (catalyst 12.2)

8 GB corsair Gddr5

700W power supply

I know this stuff is all fairly old but there are many people still playing this game and may have the same problem as me and not found the solution.

First of all..I installed the Kotor 2 and the 1.0b update to the game. It ran fine on my laptop which is running a re install of Windows 7 (my graphics card is ATI Xpress series 200M i think). No problems with movies or anything like that.

My laptop had to be re installed too it was running Window Vista home premium when I bought it. I got a shop to do this cos I could not be bothered.

Now the only problem I did have was Kotor 2 character models were very strange. The face was separate from the head and the body was on it's side floating (SO ANNOYING). I tried all this websites fixes and did many installs trying many graphical options, all to no avail. I just about gave up and went to reading something else which was for a separate matter.

"sometimes on windows 7 graphics card drivers get mixed together and have problems running properly although the effects might not be obvious it causes many gaming issues."

So what I did: I downloaded (NOT INSTALLED) the latest driver pack from ATI Radeon website and the catalyst manager. Then went to the uninstall software area and completely uninstalled anything to do with ATI which resulted in my screen looking like a computer from the 70's :D. Restarted the computer, went to the hardware manager and manually sourced the driver for my card (when you find the file it gives you a massive list for many cards. I installed the "Xpress series" and not the one for Xpress 200M). Restarted my computer again, installed the new catalyst manager. Finally replaced the Mss32.dll and hey presto problems were solved and game runs fine.

Just thought I would share that for those who might be pulling their hair out :D. I'm ATI but I'm sure it would be similar for other cards too.

For those who are interested to know, by following the instructions on the first two posts in this thread, I was successfully able to get KotOR I (Best of PC version) & KotOR II running on Windows 8 Consumer Preview with it set to use my Nvidia discrete GPU (drivers for Nvidia GPUs were just updated recently and gained support for Win 8) instead of the integrated Intel GPU of my laptop. (Intel hasn't updated their HD Graphics display driver to include the graphics control panel for Win 8, yet.)

Anyway, I just thought I'd let people know who might have been considering to hold off on Windows 8 when the final version is released because they were unsure of support for the KotOR series.

Hello,

I am running KOTOR 1 (regular version, not the Best of) and I am experiencing random crashes that seem to be triggered by specific events in the game. Generally, I've been able to avoid or work around these freezes, but I seem to be stuck on the current one.

I am on Manaan about to get the Star Map, but if I poison the giant shark the game freezes and fails. If I overload the machinery the game will freeze and fail when I either walk to the Star Map or I try and walk back to the nearest airlock (without trying to go to the Star Map). It freezes every time I try to do either thing. The other random freezes I've experienced would also always occur, but I could skip past a line of dialogue or walk in a different area/route in order to avoid them. This time though, I seem trapped.

I have made the changes suggested in the very first page of this long thread, except for the core affinity (which I can't seem to find a way to do) and anything related to the .ini files as I can't find them either.

I run Windows 7 and have a nVidia graphics card. What should I do? Aside from these random freezes/crashes the game runs fine, but I'm currently stuck.

Hey,

So, I've spent the last 4 hours searching through various topics about KOTOR II and Intel chipsets. I have an Intel GMA3150 on a laptop with no CD drive. Am I correct in thinking there is simply no way I will ever be able to play KOTOR II on this machine?

Edit: In the spirit of thoroughness, I'll add my system specs:
