That's probably because you've got the resolution set a 1600x1200 when your desktop is set to only 1366x768. It's a good bet that your screen can't support 1600x1200.

I'd give 1280x768 a try. The game supports it.

:( still not working. It's still crashing right after the "obsidian" title screen.

This is a frustrating game! Steam hasn't been any help either.

I just purchased the KOTOR collection yesterday and installed both games.

Now when launched 1 and got into the main menu and stuff, changed the resolution and then KOTOR closed. When i tried to launch again it wouldn't even get past the picture with dark malak (before main menu). After uninstalling it and re installing it, i was able to get back into the main menu and i went back to settings to change the graphics and it did the exact same thing. Re did the installing and just didn't fiddle with settings and just clicked play. I was able to create my character and as soon as i hit play the game shuts down cause windows says there is a problem.

I installed KOTOR 2 to test it out and as soon as i launch the game it says windows has found a problem and it shuts down. Didn't even get to an image.

I am running Windows 7/ with intel i5

I thought the game was released again on disc because it was compatible with vista and windows 7?

Is there anything I can do to make these games run? ( i shouldn't need to patch the game since it is already patched on disc plus I tried using a no cd crack with an actual KOTOR collection with no success)

It's supposed to be compatible with Windows 7, yes. I know nothing about these versions, though. If you can, try using the game's configuration utility to post your system specs:

Post your system specs

Sometimes we're just not going to be able to help you if we don't know what kind of hardware you have on your machine. If you don't know what you have on your machine, then follow these steps below:

  • Bring up the launcher menu for Kotor 1 or 2 (by running "launcher.exe").
  • Click on "Configure".
  • Click the "Scan Hardware" button on the lower center of the window.
  • Click "Yes" to continue.
  • Click "Details" to view your system specs.
  • Click "Save Report" and save the file to your desktop.
  • Whenever you post your problem, open the file you just saved and copy and paste the contents to your post.

You can leave out the keymapping and everything after that.

Hello Gentlemen

I've made this account because I'm in desperate need of your help!

I've just brought the KOTOR collection yesterday (CD) Which contains both KOTOR 1 and 2 both only 1 disc.

I can get none of them to work. After reading several guides and watching lots of youtube videos I've managed to install the game properly. Note I'm only interested in playing KOTOR2

I'm using vista 32 bit.

My issue is I simply cannot apply either the 1.0a or 1.0b patches. If i try to start the game as it is, nothing happens and I'm forced to close the process or get my cd out of the comp.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwEZlal8yb8

I've tried everything it says in following video.

I've tried both the UK patch notes and the US ones. I'm living in Denmark, Scandinavia.

Please help!

Please post your system specs using the game's configuration utility.

First, navigate to your game's main folder and find "swconfig.exe". Right-click on it, select "Properties" and a window will pop up. Choose the "Compatibility" tab at the top of the window, check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and choose "Windows XP Service Pack 2" from the drop-down menu. Check the box next to "Run this program as an administrator", hit the "Apply" button, then the "OK" button. Now do the exact same thing to "launcher.exe" and follow the instructions below:

Post your system specs

Have win 7 64 bit and game keeps crashing about 5 mins into game 3 encounter with the bad guys. Followed install to the tee listed above. Have cpu affinity set to 1. Here is my info. I couldn't get the launcher to run in XP sp2 mode for some reason it is greyed out. However my swkotor is xp sp2 and game and patch were installed xp sp2.

I just picked up the newer KOTOR 1&2 Collection combo pack. Love the game but haven't played it since I got a new computer with windows 7. I was able to install the game and play all the way through Davik estate. I tried to board the Ebon Hawk but the game crashed. Now when I try to load, all I get is the startup LucasArts logo and Bioware logo. Then the game minimizes and shows as still running in task manager. I've read through the instructions in this thread but not sure exactly how to proceed with my issue.

I have no way of running the configure tool to show you my specs. When I click on the launch.exe file, the only options I get are: Play, Uninstall, Website, Read Me, and Exit. Where do I go from here?

The KotOR collection should already be compatible with Windows 7, so I hope you didn't use the guide in this thread to install the games.

If you did, reinstall them without it, like you would any other program.

Try disabling the intro movies by renaming the files:

KotOR 1: biologo.bik; leclogo.bik; legal.bik

KotOR 2: leclogo.bik; legal.bik; ObsidianEnt.bik

In each case you can just change their file extension from "bik" to "bak" and they'll be skipped.

Use the Dantooine lag fix:

  • First, figure out where the .ini is installed. Default is "C:\Program Files\Lucasarts\swkotor(2)\swkotor(2).ini". If its not in that location, then your going to have to do some searching around on the hard drive a bit.
  • When you find it, just double-click on the file to open it in Notepad.
  • Scroll down the file until you find the Graphics Options
  • Under the last line ("last line" as in the last line of the list of entries under "Graphics Options", NOT the last line of "swkotor(2).ini"), add "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1", without the quotes.
  • Goto File, then Save.

Check to see if the game is running on a single CPU core by alt-tabbing out and bring up Windows Task Manager. Go to "processes" and right-click on swkotor.exe. Select "set affinity" and see if only one CPU is checked. If they're all checked, that could be the source of your problem.

Very annoying; I'm trying to give KotOR2 another shot to play the latest version of TSLRCM, but now the game won't run. I'm using Windows 7 x64, SP1. I have the original, US, 4-CDs version of the game, and I reinstalled it, following your excellent and detailed advice, setting the installer for compatibility mode and admin privileges, then patching to 1.0b (with compatibility and admin), then installing the high quality music and movies, then installing TSLRCM 1.8.1 (with compatibility and admin), then installing a handful of reskins I use to the override. I also set the Dantooine lag fix line(wish I'd know that one years ago when I played KotOR1!) and set fullscreen=1 and my native res (1600x1200) in the .ini. Finally, I'm running the game in compatibility with admin.

It crashes immediately every time the LucasArts and Obsidian movies finish, just before the main menu should come up. I've tried removing those videos; the game still crashes before reaching the main menu. Digging around through this and other forums, it looks like the issue is that my new system uses Intel HD 4000 graphics; when I last tried KotOR2 on Win 7 it worked, but I was using an AMD video card. It doesn't seem like anyone has an answer for this one; the current Intel graphics drivers don't allow the user to set a "Flipping" preference, so that won't do it. Is there no way to run KotOR2 on a modern Intel video adapter?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :(

I would use the configure option in the launcher to lower the resolution and see if it will launch then. If it doesn't, try using the game's configuration utility to post your system specs:

Post your system specs

Sometimes we're just not going to be able to help you if we don't know what kind of hardware you have on your machine. If you don't know what you have on your machine, then follow these steps below:

  • If you're using Vista or Windows 7, go into your game folder, find "launcher.exe" and "swconfig.exe". For each file, right-click on it, select "properties", then "compatibility", check the box beside "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)". Then check the box next to "Run this program administrator" and hit "OK". (EDIT by Q)

I tried taking the resolution all the way down to 800x600, and it still crashed.

When I tell the configuration app to scan my hardware, it says that the scan has failed. However, the details screen reads:

Video: RDPDD Chained DD 2048MB

Graphics Recommended: ATI Radeon 9200 or better, nVidia GeForce 4 Ti or better (128MB VRAM)

and the saved log reads:

N.B.: I am running Windows 7 x64 SP1, contrary to the hardware scan results.

BUT:

I found that it will load and run (at least to the point of starting to move T3 around the Hawk) if I disable movies in the config. The game instantly crashes, however, if I try to turn on any AA or AF in the advanced graphics options. So, maybe my only option is to miss all the cutscenes? :/

Make sure 640x480 is supported in your graphics driver control panel.

Turn off frame buffer effects, grass, shadows and soft shadows.

Try turning on v-sync.

You might want to download and use the Vista fix. It shouldn't be necessary for Windows 7, but it won't hurt, either.

I actually did try out the Vista .dll last time, and it didn't fix it, either.

Yes, it does look like the Intel graphics driver doesn't list 640x480 as an option. So, I guess that's it? Any attempt to set the screen to that resolution crashes out the offending process... So, does that mean we're stuck unless and until Intel for some reason adds support for *lower* resolutions to their HD 4000 drivers? May be waiting a long time...
