Stargate Universe

Recommended Posts

Stargate Universe was conceived as "a completely separate, third entity" in the live-action Stargate franchise – as opposed to Stargate Atlantis, which was created as a spin-off from the first series Stargate SG-1. Stargate Atlantis producer Joseph Mallozzi stated that Universe aims to "delight veteran fans, but also appeal to newcomers who may not necessarily know the difference between an Alteran and an Asuran", and that it is "in many ways [...] a much more cerebral and mature addition to the franchise. While firmly entrenched in pre-established Stargate mythology, Stargate Universe definitely strikes out in an exciting new direction." The new show will be more serialized than its predecessors.

Like the first two series in the franchise, Stargate Universe will take place during the present time, not in the distant future. The show will be set on an Ancient ship, the Destiny, that was part of an Ancient experiment to seed the galaxies with Stargates millions of years ago. A second ship would follow up and explore, using the ninth and final gate chevron (whose purpose was previously unknown) to get to the first ship, but the Ancient experiment was prematurely ended by the Ancients' ascension. A team of soldiers and scientists from Earth step through the Stargate in present time to find the Destiny after their base is attacked. The Destiny is so big that they believe it to be a planet at first, but the ship is now falling apart as it was never meant to be inhabited. As it is impossible for the team to return to Earth, they must fend for themselves aboard the ship as it takes them to the far reaches of the universe. The writers have discussed the possibility that each season represents a voyage of the Destiny through a different galaxy.

The show will be more relationship-based and more arc-driven and will involve more space-based action than SG-1 or Atlantis. "Survival and sacrifice" were the two main themes that were discussed at the preliminary script stages of the show, as even life support including air supply is a problem. Stargate Universe will be "a lot darker" than the previous Stargate series, beginning with three major deaths in the pilot episode and having one suicide by episode six, although humor will remain part of the franchise. The show will focus mostly on the people aboard the ship instead of planet-based exploration, and in Brad Wright's words will "hopefully explore the truly alien, and [avoid] the rubber faced English-speaking one". Despite the focus on survival, the show "will also focus on exploration and adventure – and, by extension, the occasional alien encounter as well". A single dominant villain race like on SG-1 and Atlantis will not be featured.

This wiki bit left me more excited than the trailer itself. Actually, I've watched few episodes of BSG, but thi reminded me greatly as one of their episodes than true Stargate.

Nevertheless, most of what has been said on this Wiki entry are mostly good news. Except for less planet exploration. Well, that was one of series' charms. But as long as they keep the interesting alien races and different human cultures spread on the galaxies, I'll be happy. And this thing about focusing on this ship crew is also one major change which I'm not certain if I like it or not.
