swphreak
So I'm spending the weekend backing up my data, installing a second hard drive, and getting a fresh install of windows on my machine. Just before reinstalling windows, I think to myself, "Hey, my BOIS is like 2 years old, they have to have come up with some updates!" So I get the latest stable version of my motherboard's BIOS, and put it on a USB stick. I enter BIOS and use ASUS's EZ Flash thingy utility, and perform the update. Everything seems to work, no errors, it was successful, and did the five second reboot countdown. Seven seconds later, the computer just sits there after powering up. The fans run, but I get a lovely CPU INIT error on the motherboard's LCD screen. Spent the morning trying ASUS's solution on their website, but that didn't do jack. Q
Uh-oh. Have you tried clearing the CMOS? There should be a jumper on the board for that.
swphreak
Yeah, tried that this morning. I'm trying some other stuff now.
Q
It sounds like you bricked your motherboard, alright. Worst case scenario is that you have to contact ASUS and either get another BIOS chip or RMA the motherboard. And don't go thinking that you did anything wrong, either, because I don't think that you did, other than using that BIOS flashing utility. I don't trust those damn things as far as I can throw them, which is why I still have a floppy drive lying around.
swphreak
Yeah, I'm getting a new BIOS chip sent. I miss my computer.
Q
That's the thing about BIOS flashing. If you brick your video card, you can usually try again. If you brick your motherboard, you're screwed. Hopefully your warranty covered the cost.
Astrotoy7
damn ouch sorry to hear that Phreakski. I try not mess with the BIOS unless there is a documented fix to an issue Im getting. Use this pc-free time for some extra outdoor fun and philandering mtfbwya
swphreak
I ended up upgrading the motherboard and bought a new case since all the components were spread all over the room. I'll just use the old asus board as a server or something. Perhaps I'll put some version of linux on it.
