Computer via TV

I thought you guys might be able to help...

I've always been thinking of ways to be able to use my computer from my TV. I already have a wireless keyboard and mouse, so that's not the problem. What is the matter, however is what to do with A/V. Seeing as my TV is ~20' from my computer, the only thing I've thought of would be to get really long cables and drill a hole through the floor, and wire it through my basement. As of now, that's seemingly impractical, especially with the ridiculous amount of cable I'd be dealing with. My graphics card already has a S-Video port and there's a S/PDIF port on my sound card, I just can't figure out how to hook that up to a TV with an S-Vid and regular analog audio.

So, is there some sort of Wireless solution to all of this? Is there some easier way of simply having "wireless" cables, from the computer to TV? If so, how expensive would it be, really?

I take it that we're talking standard def?

Though a hassle, wired is probably going to be your cheapest option. Start here at the cabling Mecca and see if they have what you'll need on the cheap before going with something that's probably going to cost a lot more. Always check Monoprice before buying any type of cable anywhere else.

If you still want to go wireless, I'll admit that I don't know a whole lot about that, but Astro probably does.

One major consideration is what type of TV you have. The larger the display/higher rez, will always place strain on wireless devices.

That being said, I know many who use wifi senders, such as this one [from link above] but they generally use them for av only purposes such as TV/satellite as opposed to use as a pc monitor.

Also be aware, that as you will be plugging in via s-vid/composite(RCA) etc you will not get a crisp image and depending on your tv, will have to adjust your graphics card resolution apropriately. Some GPUs video out can be extremely temperamental, particularly if windows(etc) is having a hard time detecting the EDID of the display device.

Unless you have a snazzy amp with SPDIF-in attched to your TV I wouldnt bother with the SPDIF out. Just use the PCs regular 3.5mm audio to RCA audio as seen in above product link, or you can but them separately. Same goes for the s-video out, if you dont find a sender with s-vid built in, there are adapter cables that convert an svid to an rca plug etc. It's all analogue grade signal which is why such things are possible ;) Gets trickier when you try do it with HDMI/DVI

If you happen to have an LCD that suports VGA in, that will look much prettier, though wireless VGA isnt cheap, nor readily available.

My personal 2c > drilling the holes and getting some nice long cables (s-vid, 3.5mm -> RCA audio) will be a cheap but stable solution ;) Just check your pc/GPU works on *your* tv before you go that route

good luck!!
