Curse of Monkey Island background paintings

short question:

 

does anyone know, how the beautiful backgrounds in CMI are colorized? i want to try something similar, painted by hand and i want to colorize it like CMI. is that made by hand (aquarell or pastell) or with computer? remember that was before 1998, was that already possible?

Yes, that was possible before 1998 (some prett god painting programs have been around since the late 80s/early 90s) but no, I'm sure the CMI backgrounds were traditionally painted. Not sure what with.

I believe they scanned pencil drawings, then coloured them using photoshop airbrush tool.

I thought the Curse of Monkey Island backdrops were summoned into existence from an eldritch hell dimension, but your theory could work too.
