News
This week’s Friday Update follows on from one made a few weeks ago, where Senior Game Designer William Wallace shed some light on how companion characters work. This second instalment takes a look at companion AI, and their roles at various points in the game. See below for an excerpt. Hallucination
Damn, I was hoping all players could have their companions out while in a group, now things are going to be a lot less interesting.
Jae Onasi
It looks to me like there's a limit to the number of party members you can have. So, if the max size is 4, 2 people can have their companions, but if you have 4 real people, no one gets to have their companion out. This is pretty typical for MMOs, though, so that you don't over-balance the party size vs. monster mob ratio, and so lag doesn't become an issue. Hallucination
Since my only real MMO experience is with WoW, I'd prefer companions to not be counted as people in a group and just have them balance quests/dungeons/whatever with the assumption that everyone will have a companion out at the same time. And it's not a real group if it's not full.
adamqd
Its actually better this way because companions have a set storyline and name, it would destroy immersion, and well, be kinda crap if 3 Sith all had a blue twi'lek named Vette, who was saying and doing the same thing in an instance, it'd be like a bad entertainer macro from SWG lol. you can change appearance to a degree, but they're still the same person with the same heartbreak story, named {name}
Hallucination
Actually in the companion blog they said that only you see your companion's name, everyone else sees "Timmy's Companion," regardless of whether or not you're named Timmy. And a team 3 people of the same class all using the same companion doesn't sound like a good idea anyway.
adamqd
Timmy's companion is no better, and you have played an MMO before? there are lots of stupid people in the world, same class groups is fly-sh*t
