It didn't quite click with me as a kid, partly because I didn't understand the setting. I had no idea of the concept of an American road trip or that the wacky locations were spoofs of tacky tourist traps. I was just like "this is weird". Somehow, it only hit me years later when I was watching some film and realised "oh right, this is like in Sam and Max!" I replayed it semi-recently and it's great.
