There's certainly an element of trying to direct the acton from afar, but you can't tell what's going on and it's all very frustrating... but it sounds like you haven't even got to the real, er, realtime strategy bit yet.

I played the introductory thing in a mine which was easy enough and tried one of the sidequests (“ambush”), where I get wiped out in a few seconds no matter what I try.

Either I suck at the game or I just don’t see the fun in the meta game of figuring out the/an order to advance through the “open” world.
