Recent Version of AOL Banned

AOL has been forbidden to distribute version 6.0 of their software. A judge ruled that an indictment was necessary, because AOL has most likely infringed on copyrights on MP3 playback code held by PlayMedia Systems. AOL 7.0 is not affected.

NullSoft, a subsidiary of AOL purchased the right to use PlayMedia code, but it was never licensed to the parent company, AOL. If PlayMedia wins its lawsuit, AOL will owe them millions of dollars in reparations.

"If someone can use your engine in a Chevy, they're not allowed to use your engine in a Ford," PlayMedia explained. AOL "basically took our software and...put it in a use for which it wasn't licensed."

Dang, that means no more free amray cases in my mail.... doh!

Heh, but less waste, as most people just chuck the stuff around here anyway, so that's a good thing. But I guess I'd rather get a disc in the mail than have the software sneak its way onto my system through some other means (yeah its better for the environment not to use the hard copy, but at least I can just throw it away and be done with it).

So it's a mixed blessing... for me anyway.
