WD_ToRMeNt
I just got finished building my Athlon XP 1700 box. Does anybody know what temperature range is optimal and at what temperature the CPU becomes unstable?
thrEEpaGe
are you asking this for issues about what fan/cooling system to use? or are you trying to overclock it?
Roger
the max die temperature = 90 degrees celcius. If you run at around 40 degrees celcius your fine. Look here for more info: Link
WD_ToRMeNt
I was asking about what temperature range is acceptable and/or safe, I'm not overclocking (1.466 Ghz is fast enough thank you). Right now my CPU runs normaly at about 40C and breaks 50C after an hour of Q3. According to AMD (I just read this) the athlon is rated up to like 90C so I'm fine. I'd still like it to run a bit cooler. So I'm prolly gonna get a rear exhaust fan and maybe a front intake fan. Right now I just have the CPU+fan+thermal compound and a side exhaust fan. Does anyone have any experience in this kinda thing?
WD_ToRMeNt
Hehe beat me too it. Thanks Roger.
Roger
You're welcome! You should be fine the way your box is running now. I have 7 fans in my box (including 2 in the psu and one on the geforce 3) and it's too loud (built a box to put the box in ) but it's cool. CaptainRAVE
My 1.4Ghz Athlon chip runs at about 14 degrees
Darth Simpson
My CPU is usually running at high 30's at normal load, and goes up to about 45 C at full load. Anything over 60 C is not good, your PC will lose performance from the high temperature. EDIT : 14 degrees? Oh right, you're the one with the PC sounding like an F-16 taking off... OnlyOneCanoli
Haha. Mine runs pretty hot overall. It's about 45C at boot up, and after gaming usually 55C. But as long as it's under 60C and it's stable, I don't mind.

Imp Destroyer
question how do you find the temp of your CPU? i'm a newbie at this
OnlyOneCanoli
My processor is a 1.33GHz T-Bird. As for getting the temperature, your motherboard might have come with software to find it out. Mine is in the BIOS. Otherwise, I don't know.
WD_ToRMeNt
If your mother board doesn't have a heat sensor as part of it, you're gonna have to buy a small heat probe and install it yourself. I have no idea how much it would cost and I'm guessing only the largest computer stores and shows would have something like that.
GUNNER
My PC case blows out cool air. It might be that I got 8 fans running. It makes a ton of noise but I see it as insurance. I do some O/Cing so some noise is no problem. But when ever we have guests over and they sleep in there they like to turn it off, I on the other hand like the sound. Graphicsgod
14 degrees?!?!! What are running DOS only?!?!! I've got fans out the wazzoo (so many fans that they'er hooked up to a seperate power source) and my pc runs HOT. Mind you I do have a AMD XP and an over clocked Geforce3, but the lowest I can get mine is 40 C. And thats with just normal use of Windows. If I go to play any games it runs a tad higher. What are you using CaptainRAVE? Water cooling, dry ice, a jet engine (minus the fire )... tell me!
GUNNER
I thought I read somewhere where he said he had his PC in a ziplock bag sitting in a bathtub full of ice and cold water. Of course I could be wrong....
thrEEpaGe
thats not that amazing...it wouldnt offer that good of a performance increase and definitely not more stable..
